US Security at Its Core: Sabotage China's Rise, Rule Western Hemisphere

The United States faces only one true challenge to its security and wellbeing – the rise of a regional hegemon in Europe or Asia – and China is currently the only power Washington should be concerned with, political scientist John Mearsheimer observed.

In Mearsheimer view, regional powers pose a significant threat to the US because they would do exactly what Washington does.

"Regional hegemons are dangerous … because dominating their own neighborhood would give them freedom to intervene elsewhere, just as the American military is free to roam the planet today. The great danger is that a distant hegemon would eventually start to meddle in the Western Hemisphere, which could present a serious threat to the United States," the international relations theorist explained.

Mearsheimer offers a possible solution to prevent this from happening. In his opinion, the US should focus its efforts on retaining its power over the Western Hemisphere and countering any country that dominates or aspires to lead Europe or Asia.

Not a single nation appears to be capable of becoming a European hegemon. Hence, China remains the only real concern for the US.

The political analyst does not specify what Washington should do to undermine Beijing's peaceful rise. It appears he has left details to policy makers.

Mearsheimer also warned the US leadership against sticking to its current policies. Since the end of the Cold War Washington has sought to protect itself by "[dominating] the world and [remaking] it in America's image. [It has] relied upon military power and other forms of big-stick diplomacy to topple unfriendly governments and promote democracy."

The political analyst referred to this strategy as "the main cause of the growing instability around the globe," citing the war-torn Middle East and the civil war in Ukraine as cases in point.

"Washington and its European allies precipitated a major crisis with Russia by trying to peel Ukraine away from Moscow's orbit and make it a Western bulwark on Russia's doorstep. The key ingredients of this boneheaded policy were NATO and EU expansion, coupled with democracy promotion, which effectively means installing pro-Western leaders in countries like Ukraine — and maybe even Russia itself. Not surprisingly, Russia has fiercely resisted the West's efforts to win over Ukraine, which is now engulfed in a civil war," Mearsheimer wrote in an opinion piece for the National Interest.

Not true. Germany is already a "mini hegemon" in Europe. It is calling most of the shots for the EU. When we say, "P5 + 1", the "1" is Germany.

Yes, the Americans go around causing instability around the globe. They have yet to learn that instituting regime change and holding "election type events" is not democracy. Before democracy, they have to build up the state institutions, etc first.

With this type of American policy, it is no surprise that Russia is continually getting closer and closer to China.

I wonder how the US is to deal with the ISIS and the growing radicalism in the Middle East, including their NATO ally Turkey, which is now called as the new Jihad capital of the world.

Funny Indian. :enjoy:

Problem is, I do not trust US media as much as you do not trust Sputnik. Win-win.

@senheiser

edit: Again you are clearly blind. As the flags on my account should indicate, I am not Indian, nor does my family even come from India.

Again your constant insistence is rather strange, It would be like me insisting you are Japanese or Mongolian.

Your choice for valuing Sputnik over actual media, but then next time actually put the source so people can see where you got it from, instead of trying to hide it, as if you are ashamed of it.

Why would the US spare China when it even sabotages and destabilise its core allies such as the EU. The destruction of pheripheral countries around the EU and the ensuing flood of refugees is aimed at wreaking havoc on our societies, no less.

One thing I like about Mearsheimer is that he is honest and straight forward, with none of the political and ideological charade. Britain wasn't able to hold onto its dominance for one it was tied down elsewhere, for another US had been growing too fast for Britain to tackle. The same could happen again today as direct confrontation is far too costly for the US who is again engaged in multiple fronts. The only thing that should be of grave concern to China is the destabilization and subversion attempts. At least Xi is trying to clean up the NGOs, which is a good indication that the Chinese leadership understands what's at risk.

I share this view too, the US didn't want its allies to join AIIB and like to play regime change games which resulted the mass refugees heading to EU. All these measures are aimed at weakening EU's recovery. Lets hope EU's trade pact is going to end up in failure as well.

Yes, I need help. Tell me all about slants and gooks.
Why asking me? Didn't South Koreans and Japanese explained it already how slanty eyes look like when they are sitting right in front of you guys? About gooks well i thought having close encounter in the jungle you would know by now that they have poor eyesight thus needed to have close body contact in order to cut your troops heads off at night during the Vietnam War.

They certainly wanna destroy China at every given opportunity, but they just don't have enough power to do so.

Few months ago, they were gloating all over China's stock market, but now just look at their own one.

But fortunately, China's main economy activity is not linked to the stock market. And before the stock market is going to become too influence within China's economic sector, I say this earlier market crash was good, and it will prevent the gambling addict to grow further in the future.

I wish the U.S. COULD pull off all the stuff you tin foil hat wearing kooks think we can. If we could, you guys would be 'gone' already. You are like the muslims who blame EVERYTHING bad on the Jews. If the Jews were half as bad as the muslims would have you believe, there would be no muslims left. :usflag:

You must come across VERY few Muslims who make you believe that Jews are all that bad.......there are a LOT of Muslims that actually do business and work with Jews, have family friends and all.........when you ask someone from a conflict zone, or propaganda based opinion, of course you'll hear that. You have a few members on here who'll say shiit like that too.

But then, if you see the reality, outside of a handful of countries, the rest of the Muslim world accepts Israel. You'll always have that 5-10% of hateful population anywhere you go in the world. In fact, post 911, when many Muslim immigrants were detained on small violations of the law or other related issues, it was the American Jewish population who extended their hands to those Muslim immigrants and helped them by presenting them in US courts and getting their names cleared up from the confusion that came about after probably the 911 / most terrible acts ever committed on American soil.

Just to set the context, we also have plenty of Bible thumping pastors right here in the US, who'll tell you crap about Islam and Judaism that you'd be like, WTF, this is 2015 and we live in America!!!

Remember Mel Gibson's contradictory movie to show Jews as bad people against the Christ??? There was a lobby behind it and a pretty big audience who watched it. So these little 5-10% of idiots are everywhere. I detect those extreme views in people very quickly and I fist palm them......respectfully.

Life is too short, live it, enjoy it, be courteous to everyone and respect whatever the hell they believe in!! That's my motto: YOLO!!
