China slams Pentagon report on overseas military bases

Honor guards march during a welcoming ceremony for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, Aug. 31, 2016.
Beijing on Wednesday dismissed as ‘irresponsible’ an annual US Defense Department report that predicted China would expand its global military presence, building overseas bases in countries including Pakistan.

Published on Tuesday, the Pentagon report estimated that China spent $180 billion last year on its military – the world’s largest – a figure well over the country’s official $140 billion defence budget. “China most likely will seek to establish additional military bases in countries with which it has a longstanding friendly relationship and similar strategic interests, such as Pakistan, and in which there is a precedent for hosting foreign militaries,” the report said.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said during a regular briefing Wednesday that China “is firmly opposed” to aspects of the publication. “We have noted the report released by the US which made irresponsible remarks about China’s national defence development in disregard of the facts,” Hua said, declining to comment on ‘speculation’ and noting that the “friendly cooperation [between China and Pakistan] does not target any third party”.

As part of China’s expansive Belt and Road regional infrastructure project, China and Pakistan are building an economic corridor [CPEC] aimed at linking northwest China to the Arabian Sea.

India has voiced displeasure at the planned route, which cuts through Gilgit and Baltistan in Azad Kashmir – disputed territory which India claims is illegally occupied.

China started building its first overseas military base in February 2016 in the small nation of Djibouti, where it will be stationed just a few miles from a US camp.

The outpost will support the country’s UN peacekeepers in Africa, allow it to evacuate its nationals in a crisis, and support anti-piracy activities off Somalia, according to China.

The Pentagon report noted that the strategically-sited camp, “along with regular naval vessel visits to foreign ports, both reflects and amplifies China’s growing influence, extending the reach of its armed forces”.

Covering All Bases
June 09, 2017
The recent Pentagon report regarding China’s plans to expand its international military operations and build bases in other states – with Pakistan a prime candidate – has been rubbished by Chinese state officials and termed “irresponsible”.

This is fully understandable considering Pakistan has also often been at the receiving end of such American reports, that change when the American political climate changes.

Even if China were to cooperate with ally states and setup military bases in their territory with their consent, this matter would be between the Chinese and Pakistani states, and should not be a bone of contention with other states.

The US cannot continue to morally police the world, and its recent arms deal with Saudi Arabia and its callous withdrawal from the Paris Climate Change agreement are just two cases in point of its moral bankruptcy.

The US has many bases beyond its borders; releasing this report and informing the world of its own fears only tells us that the US wants the international community to be concerned by this development.
And nations such as India might just take the bait.

However, countries like China don’t need to care about these American tantrums.
These are matters of national security and their discussion and implementation belongs within our borders only.

Whether or not the report is true is actually inconsequential for Pakistan – considering the state would probably be the first to know if a foreign military base was indeed being set up in Pakistan.
But whether the government will be forthcoming with the people in the event that this is true is another matter entirely.

And while there is nothing principally wrong with the military base of an ally set up in the country, relinquishing sovereign land to another nation should not be a decision taken lightly, and Pakistan must be wary of the long-term consequences.

However, American national interest must never come before our own.

I doubt China will build a military base in Pakistan, at best probably China will sign agreement to use Pakistan navy port for supply and rest stop for PLAN ships.

.
Last I read about China will having base on Djibouti. About Pakistan, I think all China need was solid and tough Pakistan army that could handle any securities issues domestic or from outside. They have nuke and still have radicals problem, just hope Pakistan doesn't experience Iraq, Libya, or Syria scenario. Sino-Pakistani military cooperation better than having a base in Pakistan, beside having base on somebody land nothing than imperialism act whatever it's reason.

US alarm at possible Chinese base in Pakistan ignores context

Sino-Pakistani defense collaboration is nothing new. There have been exchanges since the 1970s and cooperation is key to infrastructure projects such as the CPEC

By F.M. SHAKIL JUNE 10, 2017

The Pentagon’s assessment this week that Pakistan may be set to host a Chinese military base is likely to have caused more of a commotion in New Delhi than in Islamabad. The fact is that Pakistan has provided strategic defense facilities to China for some time; indeed, such provision is key to the US$57 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Sources privy to the facts of Pakistan’s defense arrangements told Asia Times that China’s military has long made use of facilities in Pakistan in return for helping to deliver the latter’s maiden JF-17 Thunder fighter jet, its Burraq armed drones and custom AIP-equipped submarines.

The Pentagon’s Annual Defense Department Report, released on Tuesday, said that “China most likely will seek to establish additional military bases in countries with which it has a longstanding friendly relationship and similar strategic interests, such as Pakistan.” China was quick to repudiate the US assertions, labelling them, on Wednesday, “irresponsible remarks about China’s national defense development.” A foreign ministry spokesperson said: “The friendly cooperation between China and Pakistan does not target any third party.”

A military expert at the School of International Studies in Singapore told Britain’s Telegraph newspaper he would not be surprised if China did build an official military base in Pakistan. “The Chinese have helped to build a sizable deep-water port in Gwadar, and Chinese submarines have already been spotted in the port of Karachi,” he said, adding that “even without an actual base, Pakistan provides considerable support to a growing Chinese naval presence in the Indian Ocean Region and is thus part of an important ‘network of access’ for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy.”

There has been no official reaction on the report from Islamabad – Pakistan’s political and military establishment neither denied nor confirmed the US assessment. Political figures approached by Asia Times also declined to make any comment. However, several said they disapproved of China’s military expansionist designs and warned any such efforts would be counterproductive to the peace and security of the region. They said that in the past there had been strong political opposition to providing bases for US and NATO forces and anticipated the government would have a tough time if it chose to accommodate China in this way.

“Even without an actual base, Pakistan provides considerable support to a growing Chinese naval presence in the Indian Ocean Region and is thus part of an important ‘network of access’ for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy”

The Pentagon claims are likely to irk India, which already looks askance on China’s Belt and Road project and has been suspicious of Sino-Pakistani cooperation. “The strategic Sino-Pak alliance and the ever-increasing defense cooperation between the two countries has worried New Delhi,” noted the Russian newspaper Vzglyad, adding that “the planned opening of China’s military bases in Pakistan is actually an expansion of Chinese military presence surrounding India.” The newspaper said New Delhi was worried about military maneuvering on its doorstep resulting in aggression towards India.

Islamabad considers China an “all-weather friend” and in recent years the countries have grown closer thanks to CPEC, a Beijing-funded mega infrastructure and energy project that will link western China with Pakistan’s Arabian Sea port of Gwadar. Defense cooperation has also increased, as symbolized by the 90-strong Chinese contingent which participated in the Pakistan Day parade in Islamabad on March 23. In May last year, Pakistan’s former army chief, Gen. Raheel Sharif, paid an official visit to China, meeting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing to foster a “military-to-military relationship.”

This relationship is not new: there has been a degree of military exchange between the countries’ armed forces since the 1970s. However defense agreements between the Armed Forces of Pakistan and the People’s Liberation Army have certainly strengthened it in recent years and, for now at last, it shows little sign of weakening.

There is no reason for China to build military base in Pakistan. Pakistan has solid military power that can protect itself, and can work with China to protect common interest of both nations. What China need is just a rest pit for its navy coming back from patrolling in Indian Ocean. I suspect even that is too much for the US to stomach, hence this hype about China building military base in Pakistan.

.
These blatant revelations serve a purpose. The Americans have finally grasped the reality. At first it was denial. After realizing the massive cooperation between China and Pakistan the Americans were in sour grapes mood. This turned into anger and frustration. Who can forget the daily threats. The Americans have finally reached a stage where they are now acknowledging the Pakistan China cooperation. This is good. America should start accepting the fierce reality.

Thanks to Gwadar and CPEC, China can now bypass the straights of Malacca and completely nullify Japanese, American & South Korean naval domination and the potential to cause a blockade of China during a conflict. It's for that reason billions are pouring into Pakistan from China with many more billions earmarked for the coming decades. It is in China's interest to see Pakistan become a powerful nation and the Chinese are experts in creating superpowers. The security of China and Pakistan are now intertwined. Our enemies can bark all they like, like the dogs that they are but this does not change this raging reality.

We don't have to set up military base in Pakistan. PN has the very ability to protect themself. As long as PLAN can dock and replenish in Pakistan' port during patrol, it's ok for me. The presence of PLAN fleet in IOR will be more frequently as we are churning out battle ships.

Japan as well

Having a military base in Gwadar will damper commercial attractiveness of CPEC. Ladies and gentlemen, PN will have 8 brand new AIP subs with TOT from China in the future. So you guys don't have to worry India. Never give Yankees the excuse to set up military base in India. Let's say, if India allows USA to station on its soil, China and Pakistan will respond acxordingly.

We only set up military base if Pakistan invite us to, or push comes to shove.

If China and USA clashs, Russia will rise. If Russia and USA clashs, China will gain a lot. So who wanna be the loser here of these three? I say no one. India is not playmaker, it's only the chess on the board.

If say China and Russia join hands to bring down USA from the throne, we will be doomed as well. Cause war among the three will be devastating, and Japan and India will rise.

There is no war directly between super powers, it's all proxy war.

If anyone break the rules of the game, then he might have to go to hell.

Russia is a power in decline - economics, demographics & technological

US Navy can easily blockade Gwadar

China-Pakistan relationship is not set in stone. USA has not expanded relationship with India. One way to hurt Pakistan is to help India.
