The Obama administration sent lawmakers this week a plan for $1.45 billion (Dh5.32bn) in aid for Pakistan this year, funding media campaigns to counter extremist views as well as water, energy and other projects.

The 2010 spending plan, obtained by Reuters, was sent to lawmakers as part of the US administration's obligation to consult Congress over the civilian aid package.

"It represents a rebalancing of the military and civilian assistance," Deputy Secretary of State Jack Lew told Reuters of the package, part of a $7.5bn, five-year aid plan passed by Congress for Pakistan last year. There is strong anti-American sentiment in Pakistan and the hope is this new assistance will help ease that tension.

About $50 million is set aside for a "comprehensive communications strategy" to counter extremist views and strengthen Pakistani institutions and moderate voices, the report to Congress said.

"This effort will reduce the ability of Al Qaeda and other extremists to influence public perceptions and attitudes and support Pakistan's people and government as they establish a more secure, prosperous and lasting state," the report said. This would include a so-called rapid response team to monitor Pakistani and regional media and "swiftly correct inaccurate reporting," of which the US complains it is often a target.

The US has a difficult relationship with Pakistan and at the end of last year, Islamabad said US funding had slowed despite promises of a big injection of aid, which was more than $10bn in the past nine years.

Quite the difference between $1.4B implied in the title of the thread and this-

"About $50 million is set aside for a 'comprehensive communications strategy' to counter extremist views and strengthen Pakistani institutions and moderate voices, the report to Congress said."

I resent the intentional distortion of this information as the first installment made (freebie by a concerned American citizen) to that $50m. It appears that this article's by-line by Reuters was re-written by Emirates Business 24/7

HERE's the Reuters story I found and it's direct from their site-

U.S. Lawmakers Get Details Of Pakistan Aid Plan- REUTERS Feb. 26, 2010

Here's the first paragraph from the actual REUTERS article Feb. 26, 2010-

"The Obama administration sent lawmakers this week a plan for $1.45 billion in aid for Pakistan this year, funding water, energy and other projects as well as a media campaign to counter extremist views."

Here's the first paragraph from the EMIRATES BUSINESS 24/7 article March 1, 2010-

"The Obama administration sent lawmakers this week a plan for $1.45 billion (Dh5.32bn) in aid for Pakistan this year, funding media campaigns to counter extremist views as well as water, energy and other projects."

The article is attributed to REUTERS but has been re-written by EMIRATES BUSINESS 24/7.

Sad.

Nice catch S-2.

I wonder whats the motive of a UAE based media to make such distortions?

GOP was already in bed, now media too:disagree:. So now i guess it is safe to assume that we will get the report of "Sub acha ha" as far as the US is concerned. Last hope for anything if at all being highlighted by the media will now go down the toilet drain and no one will ever come to know what really struck.

Sad:frown:

Some known media orgs and journalists are already with them so nothing new.

You know what there are many sell outs in Media too and they would do anything for American Bucks. So now our last hope for free Information has also been lost.

More Pakistani media are against us so nothing new there either. I know one so-called "journalist" at this board that's all about distorting the truth. Wonder if any at all simply support the facts?

The above is one example of a known arab media source that's already done everything it can to show it's opposition to our support for Pakistan regardless of its own professional reputation and the truth.

Get you fired in an American newsroom. This editor, though, will probably get a promotion.

Then there are papers like NATION...some of the truth, some of the time.

Thanks.:usflag:
