US-Pak negotiations on nuclear cooperation?

Am really embarrased by the reaction of indian media.. I dont India having any problem in Pakistan getting a nuclear deal. As if Pakistan does not have nukes now and will get Nukes as a result of this deal.

My point is all that we hear is talks, nothing really substantial.

Talks for the sake of talks mean little, I agree.

The substance does matter, but as of now we cannot say for sure whether the current talks will be/have been substantive.

So lets wait for the dust to settle and the details to come out before coming to conclusions.

Knee jerk pessimism and anti-Americanism is not helpful - criticizm should be based on facts, and we have to wait for the facts.

Thinking aloud:

US and Pakistan Signs a Civil Nuclear deal Just like India.......What happens then.....Pakistan has to place orders to US companies to Buy Nuclear materials...and equipments that can be used in Civil nuclear Infrastructure.....If people remember India is in process of buying Nuclear Stuff worth 30 Billion US dollars form American companies......

Does Pakistan have enough money to Buy Nuclear equipment......if Not than why this nuclear deal.....just for heck of it......Because India has one so Pakistan has to have one......is that the justification Pakistanis have.......I mean what after deal is signed.....is US going to give Nuclear equipment and material to Pakistan for free.........

Thanks for expressing that - I'll delete my previous comment bashing India, though I do think that it reflects extremely poorly on the GoI to oppose the NSG engaging in civilian nuclear cooperation with Pakistan.

.
I really don't know what is the jumping around going on when nothing concrete has came on table. Frankly speaking I don't think Pakistan is going to have it in easy way, expect our government to retaliate in some manner (not directly) like keeping the nuclear liability bill hanging so US business interest gets hurt badly or keeping the logistical agreement and CISMOA hanging around or just ordering more Europeans planes ignoring Boeing. Rest will be done by US companies :D

Violating NSG for Indo deal and opposing it for Pakistan will be indeed a poor reflection . And i wonder nothing is concert on ground yet and Indians have started opposing it

We seem to be by passing the question and the fact that Pakistan for once holds the cards close to it's chest, either way Pakistan will not loose as Iran gas pipeline and the Chinese factor are always available.
If any thing it's America's turn to meet up the half way and prove it's words of commitment. If it declines, and since other options are available to Pakistan, well any little leverage that America enjoyed goes out of the window.

The jumping around has been shown by Indian members here just like you did in Frieda Pinto been choesn as next Bond girl  thread.

Check the replies from Pakistani members most of them are cautious about commenting unless there is some progress practicaly on the project

Well how Frieda Pinto is related here? And I don't think any body has jumped to conclusion all are pointing towards the probabilities

‘U.S. not discussing civil nuclear pact with Pak’

PTI
ISLAMABAD, March 22, 2010

The United States on Monday dismissed reports that it was mulling negotiations on a civil nuclear agreement with Pakistan.

“The U.S. has not entered (into) negotiations on a civil nuclear agreement with Pakistan,” a spokesperson of the U.S. embassy in the capital told PTI, a day after media reports said Washington may discuss Islamabad’s request for cooperation in setting up nuclear power plants in the country.

“The United States is committed to helping Pakistan address its real and growing energy needs, and we look forward to cooperating with Pakistan in ways that are compatible with Pakistan’s economic, environmental and security needs and with US international commitments and policies,” it said.

A U.S.-based Pakistani newspaper had recently quoted U.S. Ambassador Anne W. Patterson as saying that Washington is “beginning to have a discussion with the Pakistan government” on its desire to tap nuclear energy.

Ms. Patterson was also quoted as saying that there would be “working level talks” on the issue in Washington this month.

“Earlier on, non-proliferation concerns were quite severe. I think we are beginning to pass those and this is a scenario that we are going to explore...,” Ms. Patterson was quoted as saying in the report.

The embassy’s clarification came ahead of a key bilateral strategic talks in Washington on Wednesday for which a high-level Pakistan delegation has reached the American capital.

Pakistan has been seeking a civil nuclear pact similar to that between India and the US, arguing that Washington must not discriminate against it.

i also agree.and we want a stable neighbour

.
Are you calling the trip a failure because the US and Pakistan are not signing on the dotted line with respect to a nuclear deal?

I'm sorry, but you seem to have taken the Indian media's claims to heart - some senior Pakistani posters had clarified all along that the statement by Patterson indicated a shift by the US towards beginning negotiations on potential civilian nuclear cooperation, and not a decision to announce a nuclear deal next month.

It is not the GoP nor the US's fault that some set their hopes in the clouds when there was nothing said to justify that.

Not really, you have again misunderstood my post that was inreply to some one who said Pakistan will get the US nuclear deal, lets leave the discussion for another time, the dialogue has yet to be started.

I agree Indian media does that, but it does the same thing to all news and its their habit. Indians eat spicy food and like news spiced up, so the newspaper and channel's serve what the customers want.

Trust me I want them to improve, but will they, I do not think so.

It is also to some extent required by the readers to discount news. What I generally do is read different newspapers and based on what is common form an opinion.

I understand that these are simply 'talks about talks' but hypothetically speaking, even if the Obama administration agrees, won't congress have to approve it? If so, I doubt Pakistan would ever get a similar deal, healthcare just passed last night so Obama's in no shape to push another controversial deal through congress, not to mention the whole Iran imbroglio.
