BEIJING — China's navy has hundreds of vessels at its disposal, among them nuclear submarines and an aircraft carrier, but it still does not come close to the huge naval firepower wielded by the United States.
Chinese President Hu Jintao called Tuesday for the country's navy to "make extended preparations for military combat", further fuelling fears over Beijing's ambitions in the highly strategic maritime area that surrounds it.
The United States, which recently reasserted its role as a Pacific power and said it will post troops in Australia, responded by saying China had the right to develop its military capabilities, but should do so "transparently".
China maintains a high level of secrecy around its People's Liberation Army, the largest armed force in the world with an estimated 2.3 million troops.
Around 300,000 of those are thought to serve in the navy, which comprises three fleets and has around 30 large missile destroyers, half a dozen nuclear-powered attack submarines and a small number of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines.
This year it unveiled its first aircraft carrier, a 300-metre-long (990-foot) former Soviet naval vessel that had its first sea trial on August 10.
By contrast, India -- another major military power in the region -- has around 132 warships, including an aircraft carrier, and 16 submarines, one of which is a nuclear submarine undergoing sea trials.
Earlier this year, the Pentagon warned that the PLA -- still primarily a land force -- was increasingly focused on its naval power and had invested in high-tech weaponry that would extend its reach in the Pacific and beyond.
Nevertheless, experts say China's naval capability pales in comparison with America's huge and technically highly sophisticated maritime force.
The US Pacific fleet is the country's largest, with 79 ships and submarines off America's west coast, 29 in Hawaii, 19 in Japan and four in the Pacific territory of Guam.
Six of America's 11 aircraft carriers have their base in the Pacific, including the USS George Washington, which is docked at the Yokosuka naval base in Japan. At any given point, there are around 50 US naval ships in the west Pacific.
America's huge naval operations combined with its geopolitical alliances in the region have enabled it to contain China within what is known as a "brown water navy".
Hemmed in by an arc of powerful rivals in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, China suffers from severely limited access to the oceans that surround it.
"The Chinese are also acutely aware of US military capabilities, as demonstrated in combat actions every year since 1991, and the gap between their capabilities and those of the US and its allies," said Dennis Blasko, a Chinese military expert with the Washington-based Jamestown Foundation think tank.
"The Chinese are conducting their modernisation process with no recent combat experience, no experience in fighting the kind of informationised war they are preparing to fight."

Dude come out of this inferiority complex , Its a well documented fact that Chinese navy is one of the fastest growing fleets , it doesnt undermine in any way !

biggest weakness america has is its over confidence.
yes its still the dominant naval power, but asymmetric capabilities have shown no military is invincible no matter how technologically superior they are.

they have never seen china fight, while china has monitored US military operations in every war and know its strengths and weaknesses and what areas to target and what to avoid. what weapons america uses in certain cituations and its patterns of fighting.
thats a big advantage for china.

war comes down to tactics, a superior military can be beaten if smart tactics are used.

china is by no means a weak military and that technological gap is closing very fast as new weapons systems are coming into service.

any war with china will be fought in china's own backyard and china will be playing a defensive role, a country defending its territory has a far greater chance of success than an offensive country.

in addition to the vast and fast growing conventional force, china has or are currently developing a wide range of asymmetric capabilities such as anti-satellite weapons, EMP weapons, microwave weapons, weather weapons, laser weapons, nuclear weapons, cyber warfare units, other energy weapons and many more.

if the US thinks just because they have more warships and that china is an easy beat thinking china will try to fight ship for ship, then the US has another thing coming.
china follows sun tzu doctrine.
china never underestimates its opponents in anything, if u underestimate, ur in for surprises, then u start to get rattled as u are unprepared for the unexpected.
US is overall superior, but that gap is closing fast.

NEVER underestimate chinese capabilities and our ability to get the job done one way or another.

let me teach you the first thing about war that every general says. you can prepare, you can watch the US, you can plan.. but when boots hit the ground--- everything goes out of the window. You can't touch, defeat the US soldier and military might, not now, not ever...their kill ratio is 10:1 or 20:1 .

we are sitting all over your back yard, surrounding you now with most all of your neighbours on our side and short of a nuclear attack, you can do what most have tried to do... throw bodies at them and hope we run out of ammunition before all your fellow soldiers bodies drop dead. This is a country that went half way around the world an annhilated armies and won wars... you can dream, you can sing your nationalistic songs, you can pump up eachother with great " words'- but can't win against us. have a nice day...

its not a inferiority complex, we do not think we will forever be weaker, but the current reality must be accepted that the US pacific fleet is much more powerful than PLAN. In fact this whole thread says nothing new, plan weaker than usn...no sh1t Sherlock.

simple, u phuk with us, a war with china will be ur last war for many decades.

america can do all the sabre rattling it wants, but any attack on the chinese motherland will get a devastating response to america and any ally of its that is invloved.
there will be zero tolerance.

we will protect the motherland at all costs.

we will see how many of ur allies are with u when china turns up the heat and uses WMDs.
as i said, a war with china will be america's final war for many decades.
we are closing the gap with the US, we have many of the most advanced technolgy america has already.

in a few years we will see if the americans still have the balls to take on china in a military fight.

Yes Chinese navy is still an infant compared to United States. Therefore we're harmless. In fact, our ships are all cheap Wal-Mart junks that will break into parts as soon as it sails into the sea. Nothing to worry about.

Why is it surprising??? U.S. military spending has always been way more than what China has spent.

It is funny to read so many articles-posts in threads tagged hindustan superpower, hindustan better then China, hindustan to surpass Chinese armed forces, hindustan awesome firepower and doh & doh..

I read Chinese senior General saying we are 20 years or so behind US no brainer why is all this rejoicing about you people are a decade behind China try catching up.

Actually Chinese are smart they are investing in smart weapons because all other weapons will be developed and operationalized in time.
