US Navy Orders Two More Billion-Dollar DDG1000 Destroyers

. . .
This warship will go to the path of the Seawolf SSN, 2-3 for the navy max because of its cost.

there is no doubt only a few will be built for now. but it does show the direction naval ship capability is heading. if these are proven in battle you will see more of them.

DG 1000 Zumwalt has a Peripheral Vertical Launch System (PVLS), which consists of 20 four-cell PVLS situated round the perimeter of the deck.

Interesting, I think they were designed to blow outwards if hit, like the naval version of a blowout panel.

Also it seems the man gun barrel needs to be raised vertical for reloading.

what I find interesting is they are quieter then a sub.

These are really awesome warships. It is a pity we will see so few of them. Had they gone in for 7 DDG-1000s as originally planned, the cost per ship would have reduced drastically. Anyway, Arleigh Burkes are not to be trifled with either and they are going in for more of them..

.
What sub are they comparing too? And by quieter do they mean when operating at the same speed?

they don't say but since the propulsion is electric. I would assume they are comparing it to diesel/electric sub.

Are there any more Kidds class in service or is the USN now operates completely on Arleigh Burke class?

edit: Just read all 4 were sold to Taiwan. (also they were originally intended for Iran) USN must be very satisfied with performance of the AB as there are 60 of them in total and one more under construction.

. .
Is there a comparable system being developed by any other country?

France I believe wants to build something similar but all they have is a concept. The first DDG-1000 is already under consruction and due to leave the yard in 2 years.
