US Navy issues contract for second Constellation class frigate

.
Wasn't the Zumwalt suppose to replace Ticonderoga or Arleigh Burk? They just built 3 and were done.

I think what China is building, is sensible. The Type-054s ought to be incrementally upgraded as time goes on. But what China needs is Type-055s and Type-052Ds in greater numbers.

As for the american Constellation Class, well it's "Johnny came late to the party" for this one. America has squandered billions of dollars on their LCS nonsense. So the Constellation Class is more of a "knee jerk reaction" by america than anything else.

Zumwalt meant foremost to be a coastal "battleship" giving marines cover with her special guns but was dropped because the guns were too expensive to operate. Here the wiki page:
The Zumwalt-class destroyer is a class of three United States Navy guided missile destroyers designed as multi-mission stealth ships with a focus on land attack. It is a multi-role class that was designed for secondary roles of surface warfare and anti-aircraft warfare and originally designed with a primary role of naval gunfire support. The class design emerged from the DD-21 "land attack destroyer" program as "DD(X)" and was intended to take the role of battleships in meeting a congressional mandate for naval fire support.[12] The ship is designed around its two Advanced Gun Systems, their turrets and magazines, and unique Long Range Land Attack Projectile (LRLAP) ammunition.[9] LRLAP procurement was cancelled, rendering the guns unusable,[9] so the Navy re-purposed the ships for surface warfare.[13]

The constellation class is a very smart decision on the USN part because they can make AEGIS class equivalent on the cheap & fast.

Initially they ordered 32 Zumwalt to phase out Arleigh Burke but cancelled 29.

Bigger does not mean better. Type 054A has vastly superior radars, missiles, sonars, and lower RCS.
Do you even know that type 54 aesa can’t be on full power all the time? That’s what they solved in later variants, provision for full power supply to its aesa. Idk if it still runs 100% of deployment time. Haven’t read up on them in a long time. Is penguin bro in pdf? Maybe he can tell us more

Its good to see that the USN is trying to get back on track with its ship procurement. What they did wrong for quite some time was to take a revolutionary approach to their future warships, rather than evolutionary, and it has cost them very dearly indeed, and not just in cost. Basically the USN has lost between 1-2 decades of when it could of been building more Burkes, or designing a new Cruiser or Frigate. The Zumwalt looks great and obviously features some state of the art technology, but it never looked like it was going to be part of the fleet, and that has come to bear, and even now is far from combat ready. But at least the USN should get something positive out of the Zumwalts.........whereas in regards to the LCS, this project was a total joke, and both ship classes were nothing more than glorified coastal vessels, with a very weak armament, that would see them struggling to fight even a machine gunned armed fishing vessel. What beggars belief is that it was built in the first place.
Anyway, the USN has swallowed its pride and actually decided to buy a decent foreign warship design.

US shipbuilding is very slow. It'll take years.

I wouldn't bet on it. In the Gulf areas in Mississippi and Alabama, where Ingalls and Austal are, it takes longer than in Northern areas like in Marinette, Wisconsin. Differences in yard management, JIT methods, mechanization and other factors (like how many yard slots you have area-wise) and how you utilize them. If given funding, they can ramp up their production just fine.

And ultimately it really does not matter if building one takes three years instead of two. The point is that the US is not going into imminent conflict with China (naval or otherwise) anytime soon.

Yes but it became too expensive so they will try to look for a cheaper alternative version. Kind of like the Seawolf class built with only 3 units, so they came up with the Virginia class.
