US must seal Afghan border for Waziristan push: Pakistani official

If the U.S. is not sealing the border what is stopping Pakistan to seal it? The U.S. doesn't want to seal it because they want us to do "their" work and not risk casualties.

In the mean time, the U.S. needs to man up and provide cover for Pakistan in case of an operation where the terrorist may flee to safe heaven Afghanistan.

Pakistani demand is to deter USA from pressing Pakistan for Operation in Waziristan....

How realistic is Pakistan’s demanding the US to seal the Afghan border? This region is mountainous and the borders are porous. Besides the militants know their terrain well and can always find a way to escape.

After spending 11 years occupying the country, having the top ranked military and the best reconnaissance aerial assets in the form of drones / satellites and the best SF in the world, they should have by now figured out the major routes militants use, could have started using drones on these routes, make ambushes by SF guys, instead of having hardly 100K combat troops, could have added a 100K to 200K more troops and station them on the border and see that infiltration is stopped or reduced enabling to stabilize Afghanistan.

That territory is yours you seal your own borders. Unless you can't. You own that place for many decades and yet...

No. We are talking about the territory that borders North Waziristan on the Afghan side. The pattern is quite similar; Pakistan Army launched massive offensives in Mohmand, Bajaur and South Waziristan, the US instead of sealing the border on their side evacuated her soldiers and let the retreating Taliban enter Afghanistan. Result: Taliban have regrouped and those Talibans whom had been kicked out of Pakistan are taking sanctuary in Afghanistan and attacking Pakistani forces on a regular basis. We have sealed the borders on our side, the ISAF is yet to reciprocate.

No from when the pattern of attacks drop in winters when Taliban retreats to their sanctuaries in Pakistan, so no you haven't sealed your borders.

The argument goes both ways. The ISAF is also yet to seal the borders on their side. In the past year Pakistan has suffered more cross border attacks compared to ISAF. The border is long and porous, while Pakistan has tried her best to seal the border on her side of the border, the ISAF forces have simply packed up their bags and moved into the cities. Guess who implemented this strategy, the Soviets. You possibly cannot even think of controlling Afghanistan without controlling the rural areas. I am surprised that the ISAF with all its might has not learnt this basic lesson from the Soviets.

Fencing and Mining the border is a must if America wants a stable Afghanistan, b) US must start the job because it has got high stakes in Afghanistan C) In this issue Pakistan is right in claiming that border has to be sealed. D) If the border is sealed with electric fences and mines, It will reduce the burden of soldiers who are guarding the borders.

Many of the ISAF forces are still in the mountains attempting to stop the flow of arms and Taliban fighters if you have not notice. And cities are important value, even the Taliban knows that. If they own the mountains and so on, why go back to Pakistan? Why not stay in Afghanistan if they own all of the territories if people claim they own it.

They do own most of the mountains and the country side. Something that has been admitted by your senior commanders because the ISAF simply does not has the manpower to engage and hold these positions outside the city. What about the provinces that do not border Pakistan and are infested by Taliban? What possible explanation does the ISAF offer for that? It seems t me that Pakistan is being used as a scape goat due to the incompetence of ISAF forces. If the ISAF forces were serious about Afghanistan, they should have had boots on the ground from Day 1 instead of paying mercenaries to do their job. Instead of blowing up civilians from the air, ISAF would have done its utmost to avoid civilian casualties and invested in civic projects to win the hearts and minds of the local Afghans.

Pakistan has repeatedly proposed mining and fencing the border. This proposal has been repeatedly rejected by the Afghan Government backed by NATO. I simply don't understand the hypocrisy of the West. They accuse Pakistan of not doing enough to stop cross border raids while failing to curb that on their side, but they don't want Pakistan to fence and mine the border with Afghanistan. Unbelievable

We can only go so far to beat the Taliban except from invading Pakistan because of the consequences of engaging a war with Pakistan so we resort to Predator drones and special ops raids. Hence the death of Osama Bin Laden in your country, not in Afghanistan. As well as other terrorists and Taliban fighters, even they are complaining about it. Hence why we blame on you for it. We have boots on the ground with special ops and Marines as well as Northern Alliance cause they know the terrain and culture its no brainer. We do the best to avoid casualties, hell even the commander wants to stop dropping bombs in villages which I don't support because that gives any Taliban to run away without fear of being bombed. Meaning we fight with one hand tide behind our backs. Also we do have many civilian projects going on but Taliban is blowing up schools and so on.

US has to fence the border and plant mines on the possible infiltration routes, They must also deploy drones and Apache helicopters to ensure nobody sneaks from Afghanistan to Pakistan or Pakistan to Afghanistan. This will reduce infiltration.

Sorry sir, Your hands were never tied, You unleashed firepower from the Air, When ever you wished, Regarding sealing the border, US has to start the initiative because it has got high stakes, This will be a good move, to cement the straining relations between Pakistan and United States of America.

The firepower used by the Air Force pales in comparison to a total war. Our hands are still tied because we will never be able to drop bombs in villages and suburban areas to appease to Karzai.

This is True, but you have to analyze why the Taliban was able to re group? If you do an analysis 70% of the fault findings will go to US military? 30% of it will go to Pakistan.

Well if you can to go to percentage I blame on politicians telling how the military is suppose to conduct their war.
