US fighter jets were sent to investigate a mysterious flying object as it hovered off the coast of San Diego, previously classified footage has revealed.

A video released by the US Department of Defence (DoD) records Navy pilots reacting with astonishment as they tracked the whitish oval as it glided above the Pacific Ocean.

The footage was studied by a secret multi-million million programme tasked with probing reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs.)

The Pentagon has admitted the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Programme (AATIP) ran from 2007 to 2012 with $22m (£15m) in annual funding, buried in DoD budgets.

The recently released footage shows a 2014 encounter between an apparent object roughly the size of a commercial plane and two Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets from the aircraft carrier Nimitz.

Commander David Fravor and Lieutenant Commander Jim Slaight were on a routine training mission 100 miles out into the Pacific when they were asked to investigate the object.

The object had been detected appearing suddenly at 80,000ft by the USS Princeton, a Naval cruiser, which had been tracking mysterious aircraft for two weeks.

"Look at that thing, dude," one of the pilots is heard exclaiming in the clip. "It's rotating."

Cmdr Fravor told the New York Times the object was about 40ft long, had no plumes, wings or rotors, and outpaced their F-18s. It was big enough to churn the sea 50ft below it, he said.

"I have no idea what I saw... It accelerated like nothing I’ve ever seen,” he added, admitting he was “pretty weirded out".

The pilots' Navy superiors did not investigate any further and it remains unclear what the object they saw was. Experts say there is usually a worldly explanation for apparent UFO sightings and caution that an absence of an explanation is not proof of extraterrestrial life.

The Pentagon said the AATIP closed five years ago when defence officials shifted attention and funding to other priorities.

But it was less clear about whether officials continue to investigate claimed UFO sightings. According to its backers, the programme remains in existence in some form.

The programme's initial funding came largely at the request of former Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat long known for his enthusiasm for space phenomena.

"The Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program ended in the 2012 timeframe," Pentagon spokeswoman Laura Ochoa said.

"It was determined that there were other, higher priority issues that merited funding and it was in the best interest of the DoD to make a change," she added.

Asked of the department continued to investigate sightings, she said: "The DoD takes seriously all threats and potential threats to our people, our assets, and our mission and takes action whenever credible information is developed."

Two US veterans who witnessed military jets encountering UFOs off the California coast have told how mystery officials seized footage from the incident.

Gary Voorhis and Patrick Hughes were among five navy sailors who spoke with Popular Mechanics about the strange events in November 2004 when unidentified flying objects were detected by warships 160 kilometres off the coast of California.

Navy F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets conducting a training exercise were alerted when radar detected an object dropping 24,000-metres from the sky and rocketing straight back up.

Video from one of the fighter cockpits captured the wingless craft performing high speed aerobatics.

One pilot noticed an unusual object, about 12-metres long, shaped like a "Tic Tac" hovering above the ocean.

The UFO then began to perform a variety of aerial manoeuvres that stunned the pilots who were flying one of the most sophisticated military aircraft in operation.

The US Navy confirmed earlier this year the authenticity of the footage of its pilots encountering "unidentified aerial phenomenon".

Both Voorhis and Hughes, who served on the USS Princeton and USS Nimitz during the encounter, witnessed the UFOs appearing on their ships' advanced AEGIS radar tracking system.

They say men they didn't recognise arrived on their ships and seized hard drives containing the footage soon after it was recorded.

"These two guys show up on a helicopter, which wasn't uncommon," Voorhis told Popular Mechanics.

"But shortly after they arrived, maybe 20 minutes, I was told by my chain of command to turn over all the data recordings for the AEGIS system."

Hughes said two unknown officials also arrived on his vessel.

"We put [the hard drives] in the bags [my commanding officer] took them, then he and the two anonymous officers left."

The incredible incident in which advanced US Navy planes were outflown by UFOs went largely unnoticed for 13 years.

Then in December 2017, the UFO study group To the Stars Academy of Arts & Science – founded by former Blink-182 frontman Tom DeLonge – and the New York Times published a clip of the video taken from the navy planes.

It triggered huge global interest in what became known as the 'Nimitz Encounters'.

Tantalisingly, there may be additional video – and possibly more compelling - on the confiscated hard drives than the one minute and 16 seconds of footage already released.

"I definitely saw video that was roughly eight to 10 minutes long and a lot more clear," Voorhis said.

I remember watching a report about this specific incident several months ago.

Reverse engineering such a craft could Potentially be akin to a caveman trying to reverse engineer a steam ship.

.
Anything nuclear i.e. reactors, machines run by the said reactors, ICBM silos etc. seem to always have UFO sightings in its vicinity. The question is WHY?
