US may be 'undermining' Pakistan
By Shahzeb Jillani
BBC News, Washington

Mr Durrani warned the US not to push too hard
Pakistan's ambassador to the US has warned that American pressure to do more in the war against terror could undermine President Musharraf.

He said the country could be destabilised as a result.

Ambassador Mehmud Ali Durrani told the BBC that recent US congressional threats to cut off military aid to Pakistan could create major problems.

He said it could strengthen anti-American extremist elements in Pakistan and jeopardise warm relations.

Pressure growing

The ambassador's statement is an attempt to paint a doomsday scenario for Pakistan if the US continues to step up pressure on Pakistan's military leadership.

Pakistan has thousands of troops near the Afghan border.

Pakistan is the only Muslim country armed with nuclear weapons and the thought of "a destabilised Pakistan" where staunchly anti-American Islamists could prevail over an apparently moderate leader has long worried many in Washington.

Ever since President Musharraf signed a controversial peace deal with the militants in North Waziristan last September, US pressure has been steadily growing on Pakistan to act more decisively in crushing the Taleban and al-Qaeda threat in its tribal areas.

Pakistan has been trying, rather unsuccessfully, to convince the western world that the country is doing, and has done, all it can to tackle the extremist threat.

'Frustration'

The Pakistani ambassador's statement reflects the frustration Pakistani officials are experiencing on this front.

He told the BBC: "We are telling Americans that Pakistan is your friend. We want to help you. Let's work together instead of exerting undue pressure on us."

Mr Cheney met President Musharraf earlier this week.

In January, the Democrat-controlled US House of Representatives passed a measure effectively linking all future military sales to the country's performance in the fighting the war on terror.

The proposed legislation is currently under consideration in the US Senate.

The White House publicly says it values the co-operation from President Musharraf and does not support putting new conditions on the country.

But, as hinted during Vice President Dick Cheney's visit to Pakistan earlier this week, the Bush administration is reportedly growing impatient with what it regards as inadequate results from Pakistan.

US has never been a trust-worthy friend to any Asian countries. It supported South Vietnam, Taliban, Suddam... then abandoned them all.

.
Pakistan will not be affected with sanctions later on. And there is no possibility of sanctions anytime soon. The American approach is not practical and therefore the whole poppulation of Afghanistan 80% plus taliban can never be finished.

.
US of A is aiming too high at the moment. They are unable to sew their pants in Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran. How they can go for a nuclear armed Pakistan, some time I wonder!
Kashif

I dont understand the logic of these people the US only attacks countries that dont have WMD case in point north korea. So i think the possiblity of a us attack on pakistan highly unlikely, possibilty of sanctions highly likely

Very true brother! Their aims are impractical and unconventional. The strategy in Iraq has been a disaster through and now Afghanistan shows no signs of bettement. Their benifit is in such that they flee both countires and leave others alone!

Are you implying that any other country on the place of the USA would do better in Iraq.

. .
No i think what he is saying that no other country would be stupid enough to be in Iraq.

NA, They arent stupid, its such a beautiful state for them, they get oil cheaper than most countries, They will soon divide Iraq in to three. Worlds Second Largest Oil Reserve, I would say they are in a very very good position. Moreover 600,000 Iraqi's dead to 3000 odd of their own, They are doing amazingly well.

.
I agree, the losses are nothing, though something they have been unaccustomed to for a long time. The dividents will be very rich though.

Beg to differ on the first point. Cut in US aid will slowdown the economic growth by 1-2%.
We're able to pump billions into development programs, these funds will be diverted to the military.
Rest is simple maths...

Sad but true...
Although I remain sceptical about next government's foreign policy. Dems haven't been very supportive of Bushes WoT and love for war. If they win US will likely pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan and it will be a complete different story a la Vietnam..

They themselves can do better if strategy is changed and they learn how to cooperate with governments they set up.

Ney. You got a wrong mentality, brother. I've never said US is completely bad. There is an old Chinese saying:"Under the sky every thing is black, just like a crow's feathers." but here some black feathers are brownish. BTW, I lived in many countries in the world. And this world is ours, I'd like to travel/live where I like and comment on whatever I like. Meanwhile, I never forget who I am.:coffee:
