US, India Said to be Nearing Javelin Co-Production Agreement

Why can't we make a shoulder launched version of Nag?

Are Indian engineers so incompetent? I simply refuse to believe that if the country's strategic establishment can sent satellites to Mars, they cannot built a simple shoulder launched ATGM system.
skill set & technology would be totally different. The caliber of engineers & attitude of department developing the missile as well. It requires a lot of focus & dedication to master that area of expertise. We are simply not there.

Ok, but we need to concentrate on the basics too, which we have given last priority to. Like light weight combat helmets, night vision devices for infantry and light weight bullet proof vests. There's no news of a frikkin' new rifle too! :frown:

If we think this way, we will never be anywhere.

We need to start it at least and improve.

First of all we really need to reduce the number of processes in tendering.

Half a generation of an officer, we keep tendering for imports.

That is where our weakness is.

Under development, cleared last year.

And we all know how our generals find "last minute snags" to reject them.

That's what I worry about too. Unless and until MOD shoves indigenous (good) products down military's throats, they don't accept it for the lack of commissions.

We need to invest money unlike our space program which gets consistent funding and focus these are on & off things.
Even if you look into western countries not every one of them is a expert but they exchange technologies very well thats the reason they are at the top. Until we hit that 10 trillion economy this will remain the case.

Those nations didn't become trillion dollar economies on Tech support.

They tried and then sold and made money.

We ONLY import. 95% of the times all our products just are always under testing and not inducted.

Unless there is pressure to innovate and come up with indigenous tech, they will keep importing.

Full purchases need to be banned by the government and enforced while a perform-or-perish policy needs to be put in place for Defence PSUs.

work culture of DRDO and ISRO is very different.

True, but who has the patience for hard work. We always go for the easy things. Take example of infosys even though they have tons of money they are not challenging western software companies in terms of technology they just look around for margins.

Exactly.

Your post comparing the two was slightly unnerving.

????

Nag atm need a mount ,or stationary launcher, to be fired as missile weight of 42 Kg make it unsuitable for shoulder firing purpose. Javelin is half in weight of Nag.

NEW DELHI – Negotiations are "nearly completed" for the United States and India to jointly produce the Javelin Anti-Tank Guided Missile, according to an Indian Ministry of Defense source.

The two countries have been exploring for several years potential teaming arrangements for certain weapons and equipment, thereby elevating the Indo-US defense relationship to a higher level.

"With US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter being a strong sponsor of the Javelin program for India, there is a possibility of an approval by Washington,” says Rahul Bhonsle, retired Indian Army Brigadier and defense analyst.

Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division (SED), a Tata Group company, already has formalized a relationship with US based Javelin Joint Ventures with the aim of creating a strategy to co-develop and produce the javelin missile system.

"Letter of Intent [LoI] has been signed for co-development and co-production (of Javelin) in India between Tata Power SED and the Javelin Joint Ventures (JJV)," says Rahul Chaudhry, CEO , Tata Power SED.

Co-production is for the advanced generation of Javelin ATGM. The deal would cover the “FGM -148 Javelin, which is also being inducted into US forces from JJV factories in the US," Chaudhry added.

"While pricing could remain an issue, this would not prevent Tata Power SED being a sourcing agency for components of Javelin being sold globally by the US manufacturing duo Lockheed Martin and Raytheon," Bhonsle
added.

The Americans have so far been reluctant to part with the latest generation of technology for Javelin, but the MoD source said Washington has now agreed to part with new-generation Javelin for co-production in India.

In 2010, India had come very close to purchasing the Javelin weapon, which has range of 2.5 kilometers, through the Foreign Military Sales route, but the US refused to transfer technology for the system and the
proposal ultimately fell through.

In 2014 MoD selected Israeli Spike ATGM but the deal has still not been inked because the price negotiating committee of the MoD has not agreed to the terms and conditions of price and maintenance costs from Rafael of Israel. However, the Spike deal remains alive, the MoD source said.

The demand by the Indian army for variety of anti-tank guided missiles is large as it wants to equip all its 382 infantry battalions and 44 mechanized infantry units with new-generation weapons and replace the second- generation French-made Milan missile.

"Indian Army needs over 20,000 hand held new generation ATGMs," a senior Indian army official said.

Besides, India's home-grown Nag ATGM, which is vehicle- mounted, is also in advanced stages of testing.

"The Javelin will not hit either the home-grown Nag or the Israeli Spike program, as there is room for all these ATGMs," the MoD source added.:undecided:

Bhonsle said," There will be a time lag between induction of an Indo-American Javelin, thus Spike will remain on the acquisition book, Nag remains a technology demonstrator so far and unless it is proved in operational trials will not be a serious future contender."

javelin missiles are deadly for special forces raids. a commando can take out armored vehicles with a javelin.

what happened to Spike !!!

Indian was buying from Israel when it did not sign the foundational agreements and when NSSP did not mature into DTTI.

Expect US to take over from Israel, France and Russia going forward...

DRDO is developing, BDL is the production agency.

what happened to Spike !!!

Last time I heard, spike repeatedly failed trials in India. I am sorry, if NAG goes back for redesigning because of failures in trials, spike need to as well. They may have overcome trials, however.

Thanks for the clarification.

But nontheless the point remains the same; we need indigenous military equipment that can perform when required.

Force it down the military hierarchy if it has to be done. Sack generals left right and centre if that is needed. But we need to send a message that import-obsessed-corruption will not be tolerated.

PSUs are dead. unless your private sector can deliver you have to import weapons
