It's great that India has begun to hang rapists, & I am certain the victim or victims will be relieved at hearing this verdict. This will also help improve the country's reputation & deter other idiots from harassing women. Every society needs to protect their women from abuse, so apart from giving the death penalty to rapists, it's also important to take measures to prevent these crimes in the first place. That can be accomplished by educating society on taking measures to protect themselves, self-defense classes would be useful here as well.

There is considerable misinterpretation of the sentence to suggest that India is now giving death sentences to rapists. Many have also been talking about this case being tried under the new tougher laws that came into force earlier this year. Both are wrong, you cannot try these chaps under a law that didn't exist when they committed a crime, though even under that law rapists don't get death penalty for rape alone, only applies if the victim dies. This particular case has been tried under section 302 - for murder. That is why the sentence of death has been given.

I'm beginning to think that rather than crime, IQ might near zero..........:hitwall:

:laughcry: :laughcry:

ontopic: very strange for US to comment on social issues of another country ... should India show displeasure over aquital of that white guy who shot a black teenager?

we have not started to hang rapists... this one was given because girl died ...
the new law allows death penalty but in extreme cases...

Thanks for the clarification. I skimmed through the article quickly earlier & forgot that it mentioned that the victim had been murdered. Since you mentioned a new law, I did some research & found out that according to this link, the new law would allow giving the death penalty if the victim dies or ends up in a vegetative state. In any case, I support the death penalty for rapists as per the Islamic law regardless of whether or not the victim dies. I think that all societies facing such problems need to educate their people to guard themselves & introduce laws that prevent abuse, make it easy to report abuse, & severely punish those that abuse women or children. There have been cases of abuse in Pakistan too, like those acid attacks on women, & it's really infuriating.

what an embarrassing thread...so your master gave you a pat on the head for performing the most rudimentary criminal justice functions, and you rush here to boast to everyone.

The US basically pat on India's head and said "Good Job, Son!"

That is the impression I got initially. It's typical of America to engage in other cultural society as if it's part of American extended family. There is good and bad in that thought depending how you view it.

the issue with islamic law is, it is too harsh on the perpetrator. We need to have a balance and proportion. Normal rape (forced penetration) cannot attract same punishment as murder in my view.
It will have limited effect on the crime overall and force rapists to kill the women and dispose dead bodies. So your rape statistics will look nice but lots of strange dead bodies pop up in various places

US 'heartened' at India gang rape case verdict

Washington, Sept 14: The US welcomed the verdict of an Indian court in last December's horrific gang rape and murder of a New Delhi woman as the media prominently reported the perpetrators being sentenced to death. "We are heartened to see that the Indian justice system has spoken and the perpetrators of these heinous attacks have been convicted and sentenced in a court of law,"

State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters on Friday in response to a question. "Like so many people in India and around the world, we were saddened by this horrific act of violence, yet moved by civil society's response at the same time," she said, noting Secretary of State John Kerry had spoken about it and "cited this woman's bravery and her fight for justice."

"In India, as in all countries around the world, gender-based violence continues to be a challenge that we are focused on countering, on working with people to counter all across the world," Harf said. The New York Times reported in graphic detail the joyful reaction of Indian people to the four convicted men being sentenced to death, but also noted "Many doubt death sentences will stem India sexual attacks."

"A wave of protests after the December rape have set remarkable changes in motion in India, a country where for decades vicious sexual harassment has been dismissed indulgently, called 'eve-teasing,'" the influential US daily said. "But some of India's most ardent women's rights advocates hung back from Friday's celebration, sceptical that four hangings would do anything to stem violence against women, a problem whose proportions are gradually coming into focus," it said.

The Washington Post too recalled how the case had "sparked days of protests in the capital and around the country and inspired a subsequent anti-rape law that criminalises offenses such as stalking, voyeurism and acid attacks." "Although rapes in both rural and urban areas of India have continued, advocates say the attention the case received has had an impact," it reported. "Rape sentencing feels like judgement day for all of India," reported CNN, further stating "The horrific nature of the crime got to people. It was like a bomb had exploded inside the collective Indian psyche. The nation erupted in outrage." "Crowds poured into the streets of major cities and openly questioned the civility of their own society," the channel recalled asking, "How could the world's most populous democracy, a nation that had finally made its stand on the global stage, allow such a heinous act to take place?"

People often confuse between the terms co operation and slavery.

In First case both the nations may have differences on many issues but they can work on strategic common interests.

In the second case the nation has to do what the other nation commands even though it hurts. (drone strikes).

Your daddy said good job India.
