US 'Iran attack plans' revealed

USS John C Stennis is being deployed to the Persian Gulf

US contingency plans for air strikes on Iran extend beyond nuclear sites and include most of the country's military infrastructure, the BBC has learned.

It is understood that any such attack - if ordered - would target Iranian air bases, naval bases, missile facilities and command-and-control centres.

The US insists it is not planning to attack, and is trying to persuade Tehran to stop uranium enrichment.

The UN has urged Iran to stop the programme or face economic sanctions.

But diplomatic sources have told the BBC that as a fallback plan, senior officials at Central Command in Florida have already selected their target sets inside Iran.

That list includes Iran's uranium enrichment plant at Natanz. Facilities at Isfahan, Arak and Bushehr are also on the target list, the sources say.

Two triggers

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner says the trigger for such an attack reportedly includes any confirmation that Iran was developing a nuclear weapon - which it denies.
Alternatively, our correspondent adds, a high-casualty attack on US forces in neighbouring Iraq could also trigger a bombing campaign if it were traced directly back to Tehran.

Long range B2 stealth bombers would drop so-called "bunker-busting" bombs in an effort to penetrate the Natanz site, which is buried some 25m (27 yards) underground.

The BBC's Tehran correspondent Frances Harrison says the news that there are now two possible triggers for an attack is a concern to Iranians.

Authorities insist there is no cause for alarm but ordinary people are now becoming a little worried, she says.

Deadline

Earlier this month US officers in Iraq said they had evidence Iran was providing weapons to Iraqi Shia militias. However the most senior US military officer later cast doubt on this, saying that they only had proof that weapons "made in Iran" were being used in Iraq.

Gen Peter Pace, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, said he did not know that the Iranian government "clearly knows or is complicit" in this.

At the time, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the accusations were "excuses to prolong the stay" of US forces in Iraq.

Middle East analysts have recently voiced their fears of catastrophic consequences for any such US attack on Iran.

Britain's previous ambassador to Tehran, Sir Richard Dalton, told the BBC it would backfire badly by probably encouraging the Iranian government to develop a nuclear weapon in the long term.

Last year Iran resumed uranium enrichment - a process that can make fuel for power stations or, if greatly enriched, material for a nuclear bomb.

Tehran insists its programme is for civil use only, but Western countries suspect Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons.

The UN Security Council has called on Iran to suspend its enrichment of uranium by 21 February.

If it does not, and if the International Atomic Energy Agency confirms this, the resolution says that further economic sanctions will be considered.:hitwall:

Iran nuclear facilities can be bombed: Petraeus

WASHINGTON: A top US military commander responsible for the Middle East and the Gulf region said the United States has developed contingency plans to deal with Iran’s nuclear facilities, insisting that they “can be bombed.”

“Well, they certainly can be bombed,” General David Petraeus, head of US Central Command, told CNN television as he commented on suggestions that Iranian nuclear facilities were heavily fortified.

“The level of effect would vary with who it is that carries it out, what ordnance they have, and what capability they can bring to bear,” he added. The network plans to air the interview later on Sunday, but has released some excerpts. Petraeus did not elaborate on the plans, but he said the military has considered the impacts of any action taken there, CNN said.

“It would be almost literally irresponsible if Centcom were not to have been thinking about the various ‘what ifs’ and to make plans for a whole variety of different contingencies,” Petraeus said.

Iran maintains its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes, but the United States and other Western nations fear Tehran wants to acquire nuclear weapons. Israel has called Iran’s nuclear programme the major threat facing its nation. Petraeus declined to comment about Israel’s military capabilities, according to CNN.

Iran had until the end of last year to accept a deal offered five permanent UN Security Council members — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States, plus Germany. It did not do so. Instead, Tehran gave the West until the end of January to accept its own proposal.

Petraeus said he thought there was still time for the nations to engage Iran in diplomacy, noting there is no deadline on the enactment of any US contingency plans, CNN noted. But he added that “there’s a period of time, certainly, before all this might come to a head, if you will.”

U.S. Outfitting B-2's with Monster Bunker Buster Bombs - Iran May Be Target
NewsMax.com Wires
Friday, July 27, 2007
The U.S. is retrofitting its B-2 Stealth bombers with massive bunker-buster bombs - a move that could be a prelude to an attack on Iran and its nuclear facilities.

Iran has refused to comply with international demands that it stop its nuclear weapons programs.

Experts have noted that a U.S. or Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear program could be difficult due to the large number of installations - some of which are buried deep underground in hardened bunkers.

In a recent NewsMax Magazine, Kenneth R. Timmerman's report "The Coming War with Iran: 6 Days of Hell" predicted the U.S. would outfit B-2's as a prelude to an attack on Iran.
Apparently the U.S. has big plans for Iran.

Northrop Grumman announced last week in a little noticed release that the company had begun integrating on the B-2's a new 30,000-pound-class "penetrator bomb" or bunker buster.

"The U.S. Air Force's B-2 Stealth bomber would be able to attack and destroy an expanded set of hardened, deeply buried military targets" using the monster bunker buster, the company said in its release

U.S is surrounded by a list of problems at the moment and has its hands full. The morale of the soldiers is at its lowest with high suicide rate, economy on its knees, unstable Iraq and an embarrassing and inevitable defeat in Afghanistan steering straight into the eyes, local population split into half over the current adventures.

Obama might be considered as an erudite leader but he might just be under estimating the Iranians, wet dreams of surgical strikes into Iran will certainly not keep the Iranians silent they will react in whatever way possible and will go all out targeting Israel and American bases in the region which would certainly expand the war theatre for the Americans and they might just be biting more then they can chew, an attack on Iran will be catastrophic for the whole world and probably the last nail in the coffin.

Israel on the other hand has successfully made the Americans dance to their tunes and has brought U.S to the verge of a disaster with the help of implementation of their Zionist policies by predominately controlling the economy.

There is a rise and fall to everything and we might be witnessing the latter for yet another ‘Super Power’

I agree with everything you have said Barret but one thing that does not make any sense to me is " why US is waging so many wars ".

Maybe Iran should just stop trying to get attention and get rid of it's nuke plans? This is just what all these rogue countries want. Like Iran and north korea, they want the rest of the world including the U.S to think they are tough

"look at me i am powerful i have nuclear weapons! i am so strong"

It doesn't work like that.

It has not been PROVED that Iran has any intentions to make a nuclear bomb.
And they have every right to produce peaceful nuclear energy for their domestic needs.

US and its Allies attacked Iraq for NOTHING killed over 2 hundred thousand people and felt proud of their aggression as never said sorry.

This time they will receive a good treatment from Iran lets see how they put up a fight if their Freedom is attacked.

. . .
wat is wrong if iran is building nuke weapons?!
US have thousands of nuke warheads, nobody ever said anything!
if US wants iran to stop making nukes then they should disarm their nuclear weapons first then ask other countries to do so!!!
otherwise US have no right to prevent anybody from doing anything!

It is a bad news, US will start murdering again.
And it is useless to talk with US reasonally, they are superpower, the only way we can do to counter US is to make us strong.

No, it have been proved that iran has way to many uranium inrichment plants to just be making nuclear power.
