US files complaint against India in WTO

WASHINGTON - The United States on Wednesday lodged a complaint against India over indications the country has underreported its price support for grains.

Both the underreporting and the excess price support would violate the rules of the World Trade Organization, the US Trade Representative and Agriculture Department in a joint statement.

"Based on US calculations, it appears that India has substantially underreported its market price support for wheat and rice."

And it appears the amount "far exceeded its allowable levels of trade distorting domestic support."

Under WTO rules, all members are required to file an annual notification of what products are imported or exported by state companies.

Then any member may make a counter-notification if "it feels that a notification by another Member is either incomplete or incorrect."

The US counter notification, filed May 4, was the first ever for the global trade body.

"The United States expects our trading partners to comply with the reporting requirements they agreed to when joining the WTO," US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said.

"India represents a massive market," added US Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, "and we want greater access for US products, but India must be transparent about their practices."

US officials cited issues with calculations of the amount and value of production as well as with currency conversions.

Nothing wrong as today CNBC reported that India and US have filled 18 such complain against each other since 2008.
It is good because it helps improve transparency in bilateral trade.

Chinese need to worry about US China trade war

China accuses US of hostage-taking at the WTO
The United States is threatening the World Trade Organization with “three hard blows”, including taking the system of judicial appointments hostage, China’s Ambassador to the WTO, Zhang Xiangchen, told its membership on Tuesday.

Zhang said it was “dangerous and devastating” that the United States was challenging the WTO’s fundamental guiding principles by blocking new judges, by imposing global tariffs on steel and aluminum, and by threatening China with a separate $50 billion package of tariffs.

It might be new to Chinese that disagreements can be solved using Multilateral mechanisms but let me educate you. They can be. Not every disagreement requires warning from CPC.

China is always on US bad list and US sanctioned China multiple times in the history that's something everyone knows, but as an US lapdog, India is always hell bent at US beck and call so US is supposed to be nicer to India, US still needs India to counter China, doesn't it?

India is not a US lapdog , it is not an enemy of US but definitely not a lapdog.
US hates India's relationship with Russia , Iran etc but it can't do much except sanction India. US and India have been fighting in WTO for last 20 years.
US dosen't need India to counter China , because US is more than enough to do it herself.

Too sad your opinion doesn't matter is this political discourse. But rest assured India trusts USA much less even than the Chinese. And moreover don't worry, we will develop more holistic relations with your government in many areas and that too in the medium term itself.

In the meanwhile you can keep cheer leading for the Pakistanis and listen to your government orders when they order you to cheerlead for some other country.

Nope US is capable to tackle China, only thing they need is to get their *** out of Middle East which is like a swamp filled with warring parties. Donald Trump tearing up the nuclear deal with Iran says how stupid US is.

What do you mean handle? Ecomonically or militarily? Like they did in Korea and Vietnam while China was involved as a third party or directly wars with China?
