US favors supplying Argentina with vintage F16s to counter Chinese influence and despite UK's objection

Nice try... Try harder with a more credible source.

Yep, this is what happened with the JF17 deal

The U.S saw what was happening and stepped in

If Argentina was smart it would respectfully decline the F16s and carry on with the deal, however Argentina has its own set if economic problems and it will most likely not be in a position to deny the U.S and will see that it's best bet is to accept the F16s and ask for major economic support

Both the US and UK will know that once the Argentines have the F16s the U.S controls the support and parts and weapons packages
Argentina had already respectfully turned down the F-16AM/BM when they were first inspected in Denmark. Tejas was never a valid option for two reasons: Technical and Political. As for the Mig-35, it was the first offer to be discarded, given what happened with the major inspections of the Mi-171 and the war in Ukraine. Finally, the FC-1 is the only offer that contained the considerations, financing and technical requirements that best suited the needs of the Argentine Air Force and the Ministry of Economy of the Nation.
I understand that everything was ready for the signing of the contract with China. However, the US pushed for a reassessment of the F-16 offer. This time the number of planes will be increased to 50 and a version of the Falcon figthing will also be offered that is better suited to what the FAA requires and that does not come from Denmark.
Specifically, the pressure from the US has to do with stopping the advance of China in Latin America, and for this they use the money that Argentina owes to the IMF as a weapon.
Plain and simple, if you don't rule out the FC-1 (whether or not you buy the F-16), you run the risk of being left without outside funding. As simple as that.

I hope China can takeover Argentina debt.

China can make a lot of promises. But in this particulary case, there must be a political decision coming from the Argentinian goverment. That have not happened till now and y doubt it will happens.
Choosing the F-16MLU severely harms the capabilities of the FAA, and that is something that generates a lot of frustration in all the circles of defense in Argentina. To this day, there is no better option than the Chinese FC-1.

For the UK, the sale of early F16s A/B's is much better than the sale of the JF17 Block III, as the JF17 is sooo much more capable platform than the early generation F16s. I dont see the UK looking at this development and being too upset about it.

The UK can influence the type and quantity of weapons that the USA will deliver of course, aswell as upgrades for the F16s itself.

US favors supplying Argentina with vintage F16s to counter Chinese influence and despite UK's objection

Monday, January 2nd 2023 - 09:59 UTC

A leading US Navy think tank feels it is imperative for the US to pay close attention to the South Atlantic given China's growing trade, financial, investment influence in countries such as Argentina, and suggests a joint security cooperation investment with the UK, but especially overcoming an “outdated United Kingdom post-Falklands War security policy”

The Falklands War left a legacy beyond mere study of strategy, tactics, and long-distance logistics. Since 1982, the UK has substantially garrisoned the Falklands and placed an arms embargo on Argentina, which froze its military in the 1970s. This policy may have been appropriate during the Cold War, when a recessionary UK was forced to rely on the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to defend its South Atlantic territories, but it is now limiting present-day military capabilities in the region.

Argentina had a formidable military during the late 1970s, but the Falklands defeat led to massive underinvestment and a decrease in defense capabilities. Nevertheless UK continues to resist Argentine military modernization attempts. Hostility reached its peak in 2019 with the veto of Argentina’s purchase of FA-50 jets from South Korea because these aircraft have UK-manufactured Martin Baker ejection seats. Likewise with the Argentine navy and replacement of Super Etendards from France but similarly equipped.

The UK’s resistance to Argentine military modernization and advancement pushed Argentina into the hands of China. Argentina engaged with China in 2021 to evaluate Sino-Pakistani JF-17 fighters. .

But with U.S. help and UK cooperation, there is hope for Argentina. US offered surplus Danish F16/A/Bs to Colombia and Argentina in 2020 and is negotiating with the UK to approve the sale. Selling 1980s vintage F-16 A/Bs with modest modernization will strengthen Argentina’s military capabilities. Oversight of this venture is jointly shared by the State Department, U.S. Southern Command, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, and the Secretary of the Air Force/International Affairs. The U.S. relationship with Argentina can ensure a measure of renewed prominence and a future generation of well-trained Argentine military aviators.

Argentina is one of many pieces to China’s plan for South America. China intends to develop a military base in Bata, Equatorial Guinea. Bata shares the same advantages Ascension did for the UK during the Falklands War. Closer Sino-Argentine cooperation will allow the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) to impose higher defense costs on the UK to defend the Falklands, potentially drawing its nascent carrier strike and submarine force away from supporting U.S., NATO, and Indo-Pacific operations. Hence, the United States should convince the UK that it is time to reconsider its arms embargo with Argentina. A minor investment in a perceived tertiary theater can go a long way in closing the goalmouth to China, concludes the US Naval Institute report.

Not without UK green light:

Here’s where the UK has an opportunity: Allow the United States to export the F-16 to
Argentina. Allowing Argentina access to the F-16 stops Chinese military influence directly in its tracks.

The F-16 is a well-known fighter in the British Ministry of Defense, so none of its capabilities will come as a surprise to the Royal Air Force, the same cannot be said for the JF-17 whose capabilities are unknown by western air forces. The F-16 would also help strengthen ties between the United Kingdom and Argentina, as the UK could be seen in a more “accepting” light by the Argentine people.

The British politicians have the last word nonetheless, and I suspect that some may see the current threat of Chinese military influence expanding to Latin America being a much greater common threat than the disagreements of the past.

Lol, when did the Chinese become a threat to South Americans unless you think exactly as your American daddy that thinks SA is exlusively US backyard.

Hi,

After it supplies the F16's---the US can go back on its promise and may not deliver the needed weapons---.

The JF-17 BLK 3 and its weapons free the argentinian military of any restrictions on weapons supply or its usage---.

A bad bad mistake by the argentinians to go for the used F16's.

It also shows how strong the BLK 3 JF17 is and how desperately the US wanted to contain its sale---.

O bhai mujhay kyu beech may la rahay ho, hain...

Waisay bhee - Amrika khood F-Shola uun ko nahe offer kar raha.

Uun haram-zadou nay Danish F-16's ka NOC dai deya hai, par ab wo (Denmark) bhee pechay hut gaey - due to Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Plus, the newly elected President of Argentina does not think the purchase of any Fighter Jets is top most priority.

I don't see Argentina making any Defence purchase any time soon.
