US expects India to implement Iran sanctions

GAS PIPE or NUCLEAR ENERGY?....

However, as the world powers ensure that Iran is economically ‘strangulated’, the spokesman said its ongoing cooperation with Iran on the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline would not be hit by these sanctions.

“As far as our IPI project is concerned, it is a commercial agreement to meet our energy deficit and beyond the purview of this resolution,” the spokesman responded to a query.

BTW Don't worry about us abandoning anyone, i think what you need to worry your little head over is if India can afford to annoy Uncle Sam and jeopardise its chances of a permanent seat on the UNSC because a brazen yet foolish act of defiance.
:azn:

India hardly has any option. Supporting Iran's nuclear program is equivalent to severing ties with Israel which India cannot afford.

India needs Israel more than what India needs Iran. Ultimately, all countries have to first think what is going to be better for them.

.
If India doesn't respect and abide by the resolution. It will only show that it doesn't deserve a permanent security council seat.

Like US has respected every UN resolution?

Since US has violated so many resolutions themselves they should give up there security council membership.

Anyway we don't give a damn about UN resolutions unless they are in our favor.

Till then....

It doesnt work that way anymore. Gone are those ol' glorious days. FTM, India was never under the US's influence. What makes you think it will now?
As for the UNSC seat, its only a matter of time.

The resolutions target a few companies with ties to the IRG. India deals with companies dealing with natural gas. I dont know whether such companies are in the list. But India needs that Natural Gas and India is going to get it from Iran.

has nothing to do with U.S. influence. if the UN imposes economic sanctions on a country. it is the responsibility of the member countries to abide by those sanctions. and if the gas deal is not on the list then fine. but what is on the list needs to be taken seriously.

Of course you are right. But my friend, IMHO, the tone of your previous post was a tad bit arrogant to digest. Geopolitically, US cannot afford to ignore or antagonize a rising military and economic powerhouse like India by threatening it to "fall in line or else no UNSC seat". Combine that with the block of 4 (Brazil, India, Japan and SA) countries that are trying to get a UNSC seat.

With the rising military power India can very well afford to ignore UNSC resolutions it if so desires or thinks it's detrimental to its interests.

Anyway, hasn't India already voiced its concern and displeasure over Iran's refusal to abide by IAEA's inspections? India has no issues with abiding with UNSC resolutions unless they interfere with India's sovereign decisions taken in view of her interests.

What's new? inn ki problem yehi hai............... har jaga doi chalani hoti hai!

Yeah because the US has always respected UN resolutions.

Our interests matter more than your fictional security threats. If we want natural gas, we'll get it no matter what UN says. It wouldn't be the first time we went against what the US wants.

Indians as UN members will have to comply with this whether or not the United States has asked. The resolution has been passed only after clearance from all permanent members including one Asian permanent member, a Eurasian member (both representing the East) and 3 Western countries that includes France (a neutral country).

The clerical regime of Iran is only making it worse for itself. Not that any Indian involvement will affect Iran in any big way (considering that Europe has been Iran's biggest trading partner so far) but the common public life will be suffering as always. The actions of a few lunatics at the top affect millions of innocent Iranian citizens, example Iran's obsolete inventory of aircraft in its various airlines that has killed scores of Iranians in the past few years.

And Mr. Ahmedinejad claims to be Iranian people's leader on top of this! After the post election massacre that was done against innocent Iranian citizens, I am wondering how Iranians tolerate living under such conditions.

India as a UN member hasn't complied with many UN resolutions passed by the UN.

So as far as this resolution is concerned Indian will weigh its options and will do so which is in India's interest. If not complying is in our interest then we will throw the resolution in the dustbin.

Every nation has had the choice to support a motion, reject it or abstain from it. So what possible actions can you do against a motion that has already been passed other than abstain from it? It would only weaken your ties with United States that you built with such difficulty if you "throw the resolution into the dustbin".

He said nothing wrong...India is a part of the UN and as a responsible state is expected to and will follow a security council resolution.

Which ones have India not followed?

in Iran-India relationships India is to lose more. In bilateral trade between the both countries India is importing 80% - 90% of the total trade of around 14 billion dollars in 2009/10. In another words if India stopped bilateral trades with Iran, there will be many products that will be effected resulting in inflation. Also there are chances that Iran will get one step closer to Pakistan and India wouldn't want to see that.

I don't think India will do this mistake, they will continue maintaining strong relationships with Iran and will not agree to any kind of sanctions

..Gentlemen, its business as usual nothing in the verbiage of the resolution impacts India / Iran trade. India lacks the wherewithal or the political will to defy the UN, if it miraculously gathers the courage for such it risks attracting sanctions itself.
