Indeed. I am seeing this being used more and more in PDF to silence the opposing voice. And it applies to both factions we have here. The moment anyone expresses an opposing point of view, they are being labelled into certain group to silence them. If you say something in favour of BAL - you become a BAL cadre. If you say something against BAL - you become a Jamati and what not.

This is very unproductive and drives away any member with neutral political point of view. I have seen so many posters driven away from PDF over the years for this very reason.

"Russia considers the US ambassador's visit to Shaheenbagh as an attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of Bangladesh," said Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova.

On December 14, Peter Haas had called in at the Shaheenbagh home of missing BNP leader Sajedul Islam Sumon to meet with the families of victims of enforced disappearance.

As the prescheduled meeting was going on, members of Mayer Kanna took positions in front of the house and demanded justice for their relatives who were victims of court martial during the regime of late president Ziaur Rahman, founder of BNP, in 1977.

The meeting was interrupted by protestors, who attempted to enter the building where Haas was located. Due to security concerns, Haas ended the meeting earlier than scheduled. As he was exiting the venue, the other protestors surrounded the ambassador's vehicle.

Haas immediately called on Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen at the foreign ministry to share his concerns over the incident.

After the incident, the Russian embassy on Tuesday issued a press release taking a stand against foreign interference in local political issues.

In the statement, the Russia embassy said it was committed to the principle of not interfering in domestic affairs of other countries. It added that countries like Bangladesh "which shape their foreign and internal policy to serve their own national interests instead of following the lead of external powers, take a similar approach".

The following day, the US embassy posted a news article about Russia's statement, with a caption that read: "Does this apply to Ukraine? #StandwithUkraine."

The same day, the Russian embassy tweeted a cartoon with the caption: "The current state of affairs. The cartoon depicts birds sitting on different rungs on a pole, with national flags beside them. On the top is a solitary bird next to a US flag, then two birds next to a UK flag, followed by birds next to the EU flag, with four birds on the bottom next to a flag of Ukraine.

Our business interest lies in the West and we cannot jeopardize that by aliging with Sino-Russian bloc and antagonizing the Western bloc. We need to maintain balance as both are important.

It was a foolish move on the part of "Mayer Kanna" aka BAL to disrupt and create a potentially dangerous situation involving US ambassador. If BAL had used their brains - they should have just let it slide and this entire Shaheenbagh visit by US ambassador would have died down quietly. Instead now this is getting more bad press for Hasina Govt.

Instructions for machinery is written in English.

Online Tutorials (e.g. Khan academy) are in English.

Indians are acing job interviews for FANGs through the use of YouTube videos.

Agreed. Ask these folks how did Japan, Korea and China became so technogically advanced without knowing grammatically correct English and observe how they respond.

English is important, it is advantageous to know the global tongue. But if one doesn't know it, it's certainly not the end of the world.

US is blatantly interfering in BD affairs. That is not what a friendly nation does.

While maybe it may seem that the best course of action was for BD to let it slide, it may be the US “testing the waters” to see how strongly BD reacts to the meddling. If BD was to keep quiet then they try even more to cause trouble for the Hasina government.

USA needs to know that BD is no longer this friendless basket case but has a decent economy now and has stronger powers like India, Russia and even China who prefer the present BAL government.

US will always interfere in other's business to fulfil their self interest. There's no stopping to that.

Even without this incident - they knew very well China and by extension Russia would be more than willing to support BAL. But by giving traction to this, it just plays into US's current narrative that there is no political freedom in Bangladesh and hence it needs democracy. It can trigger a sequence of events that could lead to another 1-11 style situation.

BA may appear to be loyal to Hasina, but everyone has a price. All you need is a small faction within army backed by US. The problem with such episode is that the political destability that will be created post-coup.

This is why in my opinion the best course of action for Bangladesh is for BAL to host a fair election. If they win it with seal of approval from international observers, there will be no scope for US to further meddle.

Japan was an industrial power by the 20th century - before English completely took over.

China leaned heavily on Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong. And now sending their kids to the English world to study

South Korea not only swallowed English but their religion as well. North didn’t and is starving
