PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- Intelligence officials and a local resident say a suspected U.S. drone has crashed in Pakistan's lawless tribal area near the Afghan border.

The officials say the crash occurred Sunday in North Waziristan, some 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) northwest of the main town of Miran Shah.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to media.

Local resident Saudur Rehman says he heard gunfire just before he saw the drone crash and local tribesmen were congratulating each other for shooting it down.

A similar crash occurred in September 2008, but the Pakistani army denied claims by intelligence officials that troops and local people shot down the aircraft. It said it was a technical problem.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) - Authorities found the bodies of six Pakistani men near the Afghan border Sunday who were killed by militants for allegedly spying for the U.S. in an area that has been hit by a wave of drone missile strikes in recent weeks, said intelligence officials and residents.

The bodies of the men - one of whom had been decapitated - were found in North Waziristan, part of Pakistan's lawless tribal region that is dominated by militant groups staging cross-border attacks against U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

One of those groups, the Haqqani network, an al-Qaida-linked Afghan Taliban faction, is considered the most dangerous threat to coalition forces and is believed to have helped orchestrate the Dec. 30 suicide bombing at a remote base in Afghanistan that killed seven CIA employees.

In the roughly three weeks following the attack, suspected U.S. drones carried out 12 missile strikes in North Waziristan and neighboring South Waziristan, an unprecedented volley since the CIA-led program began in earnest in Pakistan two years ago. The strikes are part of a broader trend of President Barack Obama's strategy of relying more heavily on the unmanned aircraft to kill militants in Pakistan than his predecessor.

The militants have responded by carrying out a wave of killings targeting people they suspect of helping facilitate the drone strikes. Pakistani intelligence officials have said at least 30 of their operatives were killed in North Waziristan in 2009, many with notes attached to the bodies alleging they were U.S. spies.

The six bodies found Sunday had similar notes, said intelligence officials and residents.

The bodies of five men who had been fatally shot were found on the outskirts of Miran Shah, the main town in North Waziristan, said the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Authorities found the body of a sixth man who had been beheaded near Mir Ali, another town in the tribal area, said resident Razaullah Wazir.

"This is the fate of American spies," said a note attached to the body written in the local Pashtu language, according to Wazir.

The U.S. does not discuss the drone strikes, but officials have said that they have killed senior al-Qaida and Taliban leaders in the country.

Pakistani officials protest the strikes as violations of the country's sovereignty, but many analysts believe the U.S. has a secret deal with the government allowing them.

The U.S. has increased its use of the drones in response to Pakistan's reluctance to target militants using its territory to attack coalition troops in Afghanistan. Pakistani officials say they have their hands full battling local Taliban militants waging war against the state.

The Pakistani army launched a major ground offensive in the Pakistani Taliban's stronghold of South Waziristan in mid-October, triggering a wave of retaliatory violence that has killed more than 600 people.

Pakistani police said Sunday that they arrested four people suspected of carrying out a bombing against a Shiite Muslim procession in the southern city of Karachi that killed more than 40 people.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, but Karachi police chief Wasim Ahmed said the four men arrested were members of Jundallah, a militant group based in the city.

Analysts say the Pakistani Taliban has strengthened ties with militant groups throughout Pakistan, a dangerous development.

Would be interesting to know if this was US or the new Israeli UAV's based on this recent news

.
According to PTV a drone was shot down today in N. Waziristan. This drone was came down due to hostile fire.

Any other info?

. .
If it's US Drone then the army or other special units should go to the scene asap and recover the crashed drone before the yanks get it.

Was it a technical fault or something is cooking? Either way, we should recover the crashed drone asap.

I believe we already had smuggled another drone wreckage a few years ago when it downed in Waziristan, rather 2-3 wreckage had been recovered.

Hope its a Reaper, and in good condition as many times US guys bomb the wreckage and other equipment left behind, reason being you know all.

If its a reaper, it will be of great help.

.
My 2 cents.

1. Talibaan or local tribesman may have shot at a technical faulty UAV loosing altitude. These tribesman or Talibaan do not have the ability to shoot down Predator UCAV. (if indeed its a Predator and not some other smaller UAV like the Shadow 200 being used only for recon of the area)

2. The crash of this UAV is in a remote & hilly region. The US is trying to find the wreckage which is the reason of the reported increased drone activity.

3. Pakistan Army will not be able to recover the wreckage. US Special Forces Team Delta, which is tasked for such recoveries of wreckages, may infiltrate the broder tonight, recover the wreckage and be gone even before Talibaan or anyone else for that matter reaches the spot of the crash. Alternatively if the wreckage cannot be recovered, the US will completely destroy it by firing multiple Hellfire missiles off a Predator (good target practices I guess!) so that nothing can be salvaged except for burnt out metal and plastic.

End of Story!

.
The Drones fly 15,000 feet in the air....it is invisible to the naked eye...no way these Taliban idiots have shot it down....it must have gone down due to technical problems

but in any case, lets recover the wreckage and reverse engineer it just like the American Tomahawk Cruise Missile led to Babur Cruise Missile

.
So this is how they give us the armed drones? By crashing it in Waziristan?

I believe the recovery will be the job of the Pakistan Air Force Special Services Wing (they are specifically trained for this), any infiltration by US Special Units would cause public outcry. As it is, the Army isn't very happy with the American attitude recently. However, once the wreckage is recovered, it will be swiftly returned to the ISAF, it is illegal to reverse engineer a downed aircraft.

.
quick look pak guys we have to reverse engienring bring its verecage. we will make same like make same like them like babur.
