US diplomat flees after hit-and-run, hides at military base – police

An American diplomat in Seoul has fled the scene after a suspected hit-and-run incident and is now hiding from the police at a US military base, South Korean law enforcement has complained.
An unnamed member of the US diplomatic mission had allegedly been behind the wheel of a car that collided with a taxi in the center of the Korean capital on Wednesday.
The crash is said to have happened when the vehicle was changing lanes, damaging the cab’s rear bumper.
The accident was minor, but the diplomat didn’t stop to deal with it. He hit the gas instead and tried to flee the scene, prompting a chase.

The taxi driver followed him all the way to the Yongsan Garrison, an American military and diplomatic facility in Seoul. The police also arrived there, but the diplomat and his three passengers refused to cooperate with the officers.

The Americans declined to undergo an alcohol test and drove inside the base, which is off limits to Korean law enforcement. The police also couldn’t detain the member of the US mission outside the facility due to his diplomatic immunity.

The suspect has been holed up at the Yongsan Garrison since then. In order to reach him, the police sent a request to the US Embassy, asking for cooperation. “We plan to decide on the charges after seeing the statement of the US diplomat,” the police said.

The incident appears to be yet another example of outrageous conduct by foreign diplomats and their family members in Korea in recent months.

Earlier this month, the husband of a Dutch diplomat prompted a police probe after lightly hitting a Korean man with his car during an argument over a parking spot.

In June, Belgium had to recall its ambassador Peter Lescouhier from the country over his wife’s violent behavior. The woman was first filmed slapping a shopkeeper and later started a brawl with a street cleaner after his broom accidentally touched her.

Diplomats are taught to seek safety first of all, otherwise, anyone can cause an accident and have them come out of the car, which represents a grave security risk. It is best to sort out the matter later.
He is part of the world righteous for human right , freedom and democracy. So how can he be wrong? A few filth SK life is worthless compare an American elite.

Please see the above. It applies to Chinese diplomats too.

Only accredited diplomats normally have full diplomatic immunity. Staff (attaches, non-accredited secretaries, etc) has limited immunity unless explicitly accredited as diplomatic agents. Normally, only ambassadors, and consuls, sometimes their deputies are accredited diplomats.

Vienna convention text
immunity from civil and administrative jurisdiction of the receiving State specified in paragraph 1 of article 31 shall not extend to acts performed outside the course of their duties. They shall also enjoy the privileges specified in article 36, paragraph 1, in respect of articles imported at the time of first installation.

What applies to Chinese diplomats? I am sure Chinese diplomat are man enough to come out of his embassy to accept the music if he really did the wrong thing. Chinese government do not cordone wild and wrongful behaviour on foreign soil unlike US congress who will protect any American citizen tom dick or harry rapist or murderer even the wrong is on them...

My point is that Chinese diplomats are also smart enough to avoid creating a security risk by trying to resolve a minor accident right there by the roadside when things can be done better for resolution later. Please read the story above again, other diplomats have done the same. It is only common sense, but that is something that may elude you by choice, I admit.

It will not be smart if CCP found out the diplomat committed an offence on foreign soil. CCP will definitely put out punishment or simply abolish his diplomat right and ask him to face the music.

American and western diplomat still have the kind of colonial mentality in 2021 where they try to avoid local jurdiction be it diplomat or not.

LOL. Let the due process complete here first before any prejudicial pre-judgements, please.

In a country that has the rule of law, this kind of behavior is inexcusable. In some other circumstances, however, it could be very reasonable and even encouraged.

When I was in XinJiang, the drivers in Chinese military were instructed that in the rural area, if they hit someone or even some livestock, they should run regardless what damage they caused. The rationale behind this instruction is that if they don't run, the local folks may end up beating them to death before police or army personnels arrive.

Houston PD assaulted Chinese diplomat and violated international law by entering Chinese consulate without permission. They were not punished.

Thanks for your fake lies...

Because the Chinese diplomat was traveling in a car with NO rear plates that would identify its consular status.
Is the cop blind not to spot the big Chinese flag and the area destinated as consulate? If the cop failed to spot it, is it the fault of the victim or the cop?

So if I run down a pair crossing the street with my car just becos I happen not to spot them, so it's not my fault, right?

Also the diplomat already informed them his status but the cop decide to act without verification. How is that justify?

Typical American mentality who think american will never do wrong if dealing with other nationality. Becos they think american are above any law if opposite is non american.

So if the official plates are missing, and some enterprising Uighur puts on a big Chinese flag, he should be allowed to drive into the consulate with a car bomb? I thought Chinese had high IQs, but apparently some do not!

I have a question :
Should this be made into a YouTube video ?
Yes to like, no dislike?
