The United States urged Pakistan on Friday to lift a ban on US-funded Radio Mashaal, BBC Urdu reported.

US Department of State spokesperson Heather Nauert expressed American’s concerns regarding the ban, adding that the reservations had been forwarded to Islamabad.

Interior ministry shuts Radio Free Europe’s Pashto-language station
“The ban on Radio Free Europe/Radio Free Liberty station concerns the US,” she told reporters at a press briefing. “We have informed the Pakistani government about our concerns and demand them to withdraw the decision of closing down Radio Mashaal without any delay.”

Last week, authorities shut down US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty‘s Pashto-language station in the country on for airing content “against the interest of Pakistan”. The office of RFE/RL’s Radio Mashaal in Islamabad was ordered closed by the Ministry of Interior.

The notification accused Radio Mashaal of portraying Pakistan as a “failed state” and “a hub of terrorism and safe haven for different militant groups”. It alleged that the station was “distorting facts (to) incite the target population against the state and its institutions”, referring to ethnic Pashtuns.

According to its website, Radio Mashaal was launched in 2010 to help undermine militants. RFE/RL, founded in 1950 to beam programmes into the communist bloc, is funded by a grant from the US Congress. It currently broadcasts in 25 languages and aims to “serve as a ‘surrogate’ free press in 23 countries where the free flow of information is banned or not fully developed.”

With its Pakistan bureau shut by authorities last week, Radio Mashaal is broadcasting from its headquarters in a distant Prague, waiting for “the dust to settle,” according to its senior editor.

“We read the charges through social media. We were not informed by any government agent,” Daud Khattak, Radio Mashaal’s Prague-based senior editor said.

Funded by the US Congress, Radio Free Europe or Radio Liberty was founded in 1950. It currently broadcasts in 25 languages. Mashaal has over 1.6 million Facebook fans and scored 81 million video views on Facebook and 10 million views on YouTube in 2017. Its closure coincides with heightened tensions between Islamabad and Washington.

Meanwhile, the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) also expressed concern on Friday that “members of Radio Mashaal are facing pressure by authorities following the closure of the Pashto-language service’s Islamabad office on ISI’s orders last week”.

In a statement posted on the RFE/RL’s website, its President Thomas Kent said there were indications that authorities were seeking to compel Radio Mashal staffers to make forced statements against the news organisation.

Kent demanded that the safety of Mashaal journalists “be ensured, and that they be permitted to resume their work without fear or delay”.

The United States has asked Pakistan to retract the ban placed on Radio Mashaal, a Pashto language broadcaster linked to the US-funded Radio Free Europe, BBC Urdu reported on Friday.

Radio Mashaal was shut down by the interior ministry on the on recommendations of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

According to BBC Urdu, US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a press briefing on Thursday that her country does not understand why Pakistan has placed a ban on Radio Mashal which is run by Radio Free Europe (RFE).

The United States has "expressed concern" over Pakistan's decision to discontinue Radio Mashaal's services and has "demanded that the transmission be restored immediately," BBC Urdu said.

Meanwhile, RFE also expressed concern on Friday that "members of Radio Mashaal are facing pressure by authorities following the closure of the Pashto-language service's Islamabad office on ISI's orders last week."

According to a press release from RFE, President Thomas Kent said there were indications that authorities were seeking to compel Radio Mashal staffers to make forced statements against the news organisation.

A January 19 notification issued by the ministry, directed towards Islamabad chief commissioner and police chief, had said that as per an ISI report, the radio airs programmes "found against the interests of Pakistan and in line with hostile intelligence agency's agenda".

It had said that the four main themes of the programmes aired by the service include "portraying Pakistan as a hub of terrorism and safe haven for militant groups, propagating Pakistan as a failed state in terms of providing security to its minorities and Pakhtuns, presenting the Pakhtuns of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and Balochistan as being disenchanted with the state, and distorting facts to incite people against state and its institutions".

The ministry, thus, decided to close down the radio's regional office located in Islamabad and terminate its activities.

Radio Free Europe was also among nine outlets Russia accused of being "foreign agents" last month.
