US Considers Sanctions On India After It Abstained To Vote On Russia - NDTV

US believe they are enough to take care of China. India is just a slave and an extra. If it can help them destroy China, good! But if can't ,they will destroy it. @Wood
Now India is helping Russia which is another arch enemy of US. Americans will not tolerate it.

I think you think too highly of India in the eyes of white American.

You will never understand the sentiments of common Indians. Russia stood with us during thick and thin and we as a Nation is going to stand with Russia be whatever the cost is. We have seen enough of US and its lackeys tantrums and we are not going to fall for it.

As an individual I don't find anything right in Russian action as I don't want to see blood of anyone be it Muslim, Christian or Hindu just to prove your might. My heart cry equally for a palestinian kid or a kashmiri kid, a baluch kid or a kid in Ukraine dying unnecessarily for someone madness.

India-USA relationship is a function of what China does. It is not what China does in the next few days. It is what China does in the decades to come. It is anyone guess what China's leadership chooses to do.

It is not in Pakistan interest to see USA and India form a deep alliance. Pakistan does not have any say here.

If India really wants the S-400 they will get it. If USA really wants to prevent the sale they can. But there will be some bargaining under the table to maintain the relationship that PDFers will not be privy too

US President Joe Biden will decide whether to apply or waive sanctions on India, one of America's key partners, under the CAATSA law for its purchase of the S-400 missile defence system from Russia, a senior administration official has told lawmakers.

The US administration is required under a domestic law, Countering America's Adversaries through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) to impose sanctions on any country that has significant transactions with Iran, North Korea or Russia.

CAATSA is a tough US law which authorises the administration to impose sanctions on countries that purchase major defence hardware from Russia in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential elections.

Responding to a question on possible CAATSA sanctions on India, Donald Lu, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia told members of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counter-terrorism on Wednesday that it was for the President Biden to decide whether to apply or waive sanctions on India.

"I can assure you that the administration will follow the CAATSA law and fully implement that law and will consult with Congress as we move forward with any of them. What unfortunately I am not able to say is to prejudge the decisions of the President or the (Secretary of State) on the waiver issue or on the sanctions issue, or whether Russia's invasion of Ukraine will bear on that decision," he said.

Mr Lu said that the Biden administration is yet to decide on applying sanctions on India under CAATSA.

"India is a really important security partner of ours now. And that we value moving forward that partnership and I hope that part of what happens with the extreme criticism that Russia has faced is that India will find it's now time to further distances," Mr Lu said.

The senior American diplomat said it is going to be very hard for any country to buy major weapon systems from Russia because of the sweeping sanctions now placed on Russian banks.

"What we've seen from India in just the last few weeks, is the cancellation of MiG 29 orders, Russian helicopter orders and anti-tank weapon orders," Mr Lu said.

Mr Lu's remarks came as India faced flak from US lawmakers, both Republicans and Democrats for choosing to abstain from a UN vote on Wednesday to rebuke Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

A total of 141 nations voted in favour of the move condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine and five nations were against it, with 35 countries, including India, abstaining.

The UN General Assembly resolution was similar to the one circulated in the 15-nation Security Council last Friday, on which also India had abstained.

The UN Security Council resolution, which received 11 votes in favour and three abstentions, was blocked after permanent member Russia exercised its veto.

In October 2018, India had signed a USD 5 billion deal with Russia to buy five units of the S-400 air defence missile systems, despite a warning from the then Trump administration that going ahead with the contract may invite US sanctions.

The US has already imposed sanctions on Turkey under the CAATSA for the purchase of a batch of S-400 missile defence systems from Russia.

Following the US sanctions on Turkey over the procurement of S-400 missile systems, there were apprehensions that Washington may impose similar punitive measures on India.

Russia has been one of India's key major suppliers of arms and ammunition.

To be fair, US has few options w.r.t India. Sanction India for purchasing new Russian hardware but you will have to provide an equally good system to India keeping in view China.
I don't see it happening.

Except ndtv , not many ppl worried about American sanctions.

USA has never had an ally so disobedient. the sanctions will be harsh, like stop issuing H1B visas or ban outsourcing call center jobs to foreign countries. India will comply eventually

Most probably, US would not antagonize India, under the circumstances.

No sanctions on India. Already the Indian government has instructed the government-run State Bank of India to stop transactions with Russian individuals and organizations who are sanctioned by USA government, the EU and the UNO. From this article from March 1st :
India's top lender will not process any transactions involving Russian entities subject to international sanctions imposed on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, according to a letter seen by Reuters and people familiar with the matter. "No transactions involving entities, banks, ports or vessels appearing" on a U.S., European Union or United Nations sanctions list shall be processed irrespective of the currency of the transaction, said a letter sent by State Bank of India (SBI) to certain clients.

SBI did not immediately respond to emails or calls seeking comment on the matter.

"We have a significant international presence and we need to comply with U.S. and EU regulations as we are present in those jurisdictions and we cannot be seen as not adhering to these rules," said a senior SBI executive.

The invasion, which Moscow calls a "special operation" and which is the biggest assault on an European state since World War Two, was met with widespread condemnation and an array of sanctions.

India, which has deep trade and defense ties with Russia, has so far not publicly condemned its long-standing ally, but has called for an end to violence and for diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the conflict.
SBI in the letter to clients also urged "extra precautions" while handling any transactions related to sanctioned countries.

Many major Indian corporate houses have deep links with the state-controlled lender, which has a large network of overseas branches.

SBI has also sought information from Indian oil companies about their exposure to Russia including stakes in Russian assets, funds received from Russia in the last year and lenders involved in routing these transactions, according to two senior energy industry sources.

One of India's top refiners, Indian Oil Corp, said on Monday it would no longer accept cargoes of Russian crude and Kazakh CPC Blend cargoes on a free on board (FOB) basis due to insurance risk.

Apart from oil companies, Indian fertiliser companies also deal extensively with Russia for imports of crop nutrients.
The Modi government is a deep ally of the Western bloc.

This is the best way to put it. American security strategy in Indo Pacific will be better served if India is a credible opponent to China, by hook or crook :bunny:

No sanctions from the Western bloc on India. Modi government has obeyed. Please read my previous post ( #49 ) about the State Bank of India.

Nothing going to happen.

Americans will huff and puff for public galleries and thats about it.

Yanks have invested a lot into India to be a nuisance for Pakistan spanning decades. This smokescreen of Indian being a bulwark against China in all practical purpose is like , as if Cuba will pretend to be a bulwark against America! And this has been exposed recently when America literally went missing when PLA come calling and clubbed India.

America was fully involved in sponsoring and abetting Indian terrorism via Afghan soil when it was occupying that country. Its America which gave space to India in Afghanistan, its American patronage which allowed India to be untouched and never called upon in international forums/institution for its blatant terrorism campaign against Pakistan.

As for S400, its deployed in Punjab, next to Pakistan! Why would yanks sanction India on this? A Russian weapon, deployed against Pakistan , might cause issues in the understanding that is starting to emerge between Islamabad-Beijing-Moscow.

Let us say if I could care less about a bar brawl with clubs. Hey we live in the 21st century not in the stone ages

Not just provide at system to India, but make it affordable for Indians. GOI will also insist on local manufacturing and some ToT

US needs India more than India needs US.
Not at all. Not in the slightest. There is a certain degree of alignment of interests between US and India. There are also many areas that the two countries do not play well - most importantly in Trade. :undecided:

The trend is in China's favour atleast at the moment since China is more productive than EU-America and India combined, Shanghai has larger GDP than India,China adds a GDP equal to India's in a year.
And yet Indians are too thick-headed to think they are in some sort of competition against China ,US knows where India stands before china, for US ,it's about providing feed to your cattle(India) before sending her to slaughterhouse in anticipation of dulling the butcher's(china) knife.

Exactly... This relationship will test patience of both sides. There will be areas where our interests are not same. Both will have to keep working on despite these differences.

India should thank China for American leniency in strategic affairs

for following its own interest
Is USA entitled to follow it's interests? If so it has every right to do this. If Pakistan had the power of sanctions on India we all know it would have used them.

And my feeling is USA will not do anything that really has bite. India is just too large and much needed pawn against China.

Sure, but in that scenario, if Pakistan was replaced with US history, I'd be saying the same thing.

too much power is bad, against the entire world, that is.

Bad only because you don't have it. Everybody wants it. Find me a country that does not aspires and tries to gain power. Your just playing sour grapes.

If Pakistan had the power USA has all of us would be over the moon. And we would be asking for it to be used to thrash India and free Kashmir.
