US carriers unhappy with American aid to Air India

AI is a piece of un-adulterated crap. All of its air-hostesses are 60+ grannies who try to intimidate you when you ask for a glass of water...This doesn't change even when you get your next ticket in the first/business class. Absolute disgrace...better give it to some private players or put it out of its misery...

Air India losses for FY2011 estimated at USD1.6bn

India's Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi, in a written reply to Parliament, stated Air India is estimated to report a loss before tax of INR69.94 billion (USD1.6 billion) in FY2011 (Reuters/PTI/IANS/The Hindu, 03-Jul-2011). Mr Ravi blamed rising fuel costs, high interest rates, rising yields and a high employee-aircraft ratio (263 employees per aircraft) for the estimated provisional result. "The turnaround plan submitted by Air India envisages substantial equity support," he said. A panel of ministers has been holding meetings to discuss infusing equity into the loss-making carrier and is reportedly in the process of preparing a note to the federal cabinet. "The financial position of Air India is being intensively monitored by the government. The turnaround plan and with financial restructuring plan of Air India is presently being examined," Mr Ravi said. Air India is also in talks with banks to restructure USD4 billion of working capital debt and is implementing a turnaround plan which would focus on a hub-and-spoke route model, reduce costs by redeploying staff and divest non-core real estate. The airline has failed to post a profit since merging with Indian Airlines in 2007 and relies on government cash infusions to survive.

Should we really need such a national carrier?

It is a waste of money when USA's economy is in such a bad shape.

Uncle Sam's said "Nothing FREE excepted the dirty Air"

What US does to IA just a simple phrase "good for you, good for me"

It is a waste of money when USA's economy is in such a bad shape.

Guess you've never handled finance in your life. Here's some lesson; money borrowed usually is returned WITH interest. Which is additional revenue to US. Get it? Aid money is usually for those who are not in a position to return money. AI is backed by entire government (sadly true). Are you telling me a national government of world's 4th largest economy by parity cannot pay back a paltry sum of some aircraft?

Are you really that ignorant or is it just because you like to create dissing threads? Grow up, kid. Don't turn the forum into a childish word war. Teenagers with raging hormones do it. Not mature adults.

U.S. airlines seek to block Air India jet purchases
U.S. airlines seek to block Air India jet purchases | Reuters

(Reuters) - U.S. airlines sought on Wednesday to block $3.4 billion in pending taxpayer-backed loan guarantees for Air India to buy Boeing Co jetliners.

The Air Transport Association, the leading U.S. trade group for major carriers, sought an injunction in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to stop financing arranged by the Export-Import Bank of the United States.

The Ex-Im bank is an independent agency that finances sales of American exports to international purchasers.

Airlines contend low-interest credit assistance to foreign carriers violates federal law. They also say that such financing puts them at a competitive disadvantage and that Air India's losses and management troubles should disqualify it from financing.

Air India ordered up to 50 long-range Boeing jets worth about $6 billion in 2005.

Foreign carriers, the U.S. airlines also contend, have added capacity and gained market share on international routes to and from the United States.

"We believe that it is time for Ex-Im Bank to revise its practices and consider the impact on the U.S. airline industry and its employees," said ATA Chief Executive Nick Calio.

"We repeatedly have sought additional information about the timing and details of the Air India delivery, but the Ex-Im Bank has refused to provide it. ATA has no choice but to seek judicial intervention in order to prevent our members from suffering irreparable injury," Calio said.

The Ex-Im Bank said it believes the ATA lawsuit is without merit.

"Export credit financing ensures American companies and American workers have a level playing field in the increasingly competitive and challenging global markets," Ex-Im Bank spokeswoman Maura Policelli said.

Boeing had no immediate comment.

The case is the Air Transport Association of America Inc v. Export-Import Bank of the United States.

I am glad the Americans are speaking up....:cheesy:

It is a waste of money when USA's economy is in such a bad shape.

Maybe you need to understand that there is a difference between an Aid and a Loan. A loan has to be repaid along with interest so it is not a waste of money. The lender gains interest on capital. And Aid..... that is different. I just hope that you know that one does not need to either repay the Aid back nor pay interest on it. It is given free and that is actual the impact on the taxpayer of the donor country.

US Banks should save Boeing directly instead of going through AI.

hafissss we all here are witness to your love for Google anti India articles. another really great topic you could Google is the "principles of economics" :)
