‘US building bridges with Muslims’

Aligarh:
It has been a little over a year since Barack Obama delivered his “A New Beginning” speech at Cairo University where he addressed the Muslim world. Rashad Hussain, the US President’s Special Envoy to the Organization of Islamic Conference, took stock of the tangibles of the Obama administration’s engagement with Muslims on Monday at the Aligarh Muslim University.

“In the first year after the Cairo speech, there has been progress in three major areas. The first area has been the creation of a broad framework to engage Muslim countries around the world. For many years, the basis of engagement was just in the issue of national security or counter-terrorism,” Hussain said.

“The President recognises that Muslims are one-fourth of the world’s population. You cannot engage one-fourth of the world’s population based on the belief of a small, fringe minority of people,” he said.

“The second main area of change has been partnerships in a number of areas including education, health, entrepreneurship, science, technology, interfaith dialogue to mention just a few of them,” he said, before listing a series of action plans for the Muslim world. He talked of reducing incidence of Polio in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and certain states of India; of the appointment of three Science Envoys for the Muslim world; and the Global Technology Innovation Fund which will be investing up to $3 billion.

The third main area has been an “affirmative, long term strategy” whose results “may not be as glamorous or obvious in the short-term.” “In the new National Security Strategy, the administration sees it counter-productive to use terms such as Islamic Terrorism or Jihadists. The reason for that is that — as the President mentioned in Cairo — has nothing to do with Islam,” he said. “To give that the title ‘Islamic Terrorism’ actually provides a dignified term to describe terrorism, which is wrong and actually gives credibility to those that were arguing that terrorism has something to do with Islam....”

Hussain, whose parents migrated to the US from India interacted with senior faculty members and students over two separate sessions. The 32-year-old also talked about growing up in the US and referred to his life to clear misconceptions. “My sister wore the hijab throughout university. She is a paediatrician; she now wears the hijab as a paediatrician in the United States,” said Hussain, who holds a Yale Law Degree and a Masters Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Harvard University.

US working with India on Muslim issues: OIC Envoy | ummid.com

Mumbai: The US is actively engaged with India, which has huge Muslim population, especially targeting the community in the field of health, education, science and technology, American Special Envoy Rashad Hussain said today.

"We are working directly with India targeting Muslim population. In the field of health, we are working in partnership with four countries — Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria and India (especially in UP and Bihar's Muslim dominated areas) — where polio is endemic," Hussain, the US Special Envoy to the Organisation of Islamic Conference, told reporters here.

"Second is the creation of partnership in many areas and in the area of education we have already achieved 30 per cent increase," he said.

Tremendous progress has been made in areas of positive engagement with Muslims across the globe since Barack Obama took over as US President.

Obama has created a broad comprehensive framework to deal with the Muslims and this engagement and partnerships are in a number of areas including education, entrepreneurship, economic development, science and technology and health, he said.

The problems cannot be solved overnight and there will be obstacles, but "we are optimistic that we will overcome them and bring peace and security to the world," Hussain said.

The Special Envoy met some civil society groups and also interacted with students of Rizvi college at Bandra.

Hussain, who is on a visit to India, was appointed by Obama in February as part of his government's initiative to "deepen and expand its relationship with the Muslim world".

His family has roots in Gorakhpur, Patna and Aligarh and he is a product of Yale Law School. He had served as a Trial Attorney at the US Department of Justice.

India to bridge the gap between Muslims and the United States of America

Hyderabad, 5th Aug: The US government did not subscribe to the idea of Islamic terrorism. There was no such thing. Violence was alien to Islam which was primarily a religion of peace, said Rashad Hussain, US special envoy to the Organisation of Islamic Conference.

Addressing staff and students at the Muffakham Jah Engineering College here on Wednesday, he deplored the terrible things being done by people in the name of Islam. In fact 80 to 90 per cent of the victims of such senseless acts were Muslims themselves.

Mr. Hussain is on a special mission to India to bridge the gap between Muslims and the United States of America. During his brief address he sought to address concerns about the US hardened response to 9/11, the Iraq war and the Israel-Palestine conflict. President Barack Obama was working to end the war in Iraq and seeking two-state solution to the Middle East imbroglio. Troop would be pulled out of Afghanistan gradually.

A special envoy, George Mitchell, was being sent to ensure direct talks between Israel-Palestine. “Our major concern is to promote peace and security. The perception in the Muslim world will change,” Mr. Hussain hoped. What was the real change after Mr. Obama's famous Cairo speech? Well, the US administration had taken many initiatives on education, global health, entrepreneurship and countering violent extremism with Muslim leaders and academics.

The educational exchanges had increased by 30 per cent and so were science and technology collaborations with Muslim dominated countries. The most important initiative was to address issues of distrust between US and Muslim world. Replying to questions, Mr. Hussain denied that US indulged in racial profiling. US was the world leader in protection of human rights. Mr. Hussain, who has roots in India, said there was total freedom for Muslims to practise their religion in US.

But at airports security measures had to be taken. But none was targeted on the basis of religion. He did not agree that Muslim students were discriminated in issue of US visas. Like India, US was a multi-cultural and multi religious country.

There were thousands of Muslim students studying there. Earlier, Zafar Javeed, vice-chairman, Sultan-ul-Uloom Educational Society, welcomed the gathering.

I dont see any difference between Hindus and Muslims in India, I dont see any reason why the US should make special efforts to build bridges with a particular community only.

All Indians broadly think on the similar lines with regards to the foreign policy.

.
In India only Indians live and religion is a personal and private matter of a individual, what others have to do with it? We should not allow this to happen as its not a good practice.

Justin, Dr. Evil,

Your points are valid if the US comes here with intentions of "Divide and Rule". I am not sure that is the case here. Muslims have an unfair image across the world and there are only a few countries which can improve that. The main requirement is to have an substantial and influential Muslim population that is progressive and respected. Only India, Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia come to mind. Unfortunately for the other 3, the Islamophobes will never let the relations get better and paint everything under the "Caliphate-phobia". Even Turkey might not have that advantage since the west is already hyper over Erdogan's "Islamic" policies.

IMHO, India has the best chance of reconciling differences between the world (esp the US) and its Muslims.

Thats interesting news... but to be honest, I had not read any other articles so far about this happening in India!

But at airports security measures had to be taken. But none was targeted on the basis of religion. He did not agree that Muslim students were discriminated in issue of US visas. Like India, US was a multi-cultural and multi religious country.

Some of our Heroes may not agree with this! :D

Good outreach but wasted in India...Indian Muslims do not go around the world trying to kill others so what is the point.

Indian Muslims are best with least fanatism, I appreciate them. If USA is trying to help them it's good we have less chance of conspiracy theories in India, where help is also looked as conspiracy.
