MANILA, Philippines – A US Navy attack submarine has arrived in Subic Bay, Zambales, about 124 nautical miles away from the disputed Scarborough shoal (Panatag Shoal).

Authorities said the USS North Carolina is docked at Subic Freeport for "routine ship replenishment," amid a standoff between Philippine and Chinese ships near the area.

Philippine Navy spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Omar Tonsay clarified that the US submarine’s arrival last Sunday “has nothing to do with that matter.”

Tonsay said the USS North Carolina is due to leave Subic on Saturday.

According to the website of US Pacific Command (US PACOM), the 350-feet long USS North Carolina is the fourth submarine in the Virginia class and is the US Navy's "newest class of submarine and the first ship designed for the post Cold-War environment."

"She is designed to operate with stealth, agility and endurance in the world's littoral regions, as well as the deep oceans. During this maiden deployment, her crew provided the value of the ship and their training by completing a wide variety of missions assigned by their operational commander," PACOM said.

"North Carolina is one of the stealthiest, most technologically advanced submarines in the world. She brings to the region the capability to conduct the full spectrum of potential submarine missions including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, strike, naval special warfare involving special operations forces, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, and mine warfare," it added.

The submarine's arrival came two weeks after Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario met with their US counterparts in Washington.

US Secretary of the State Hillary Clinton earlier stressed that although US is not taking side in the dispute, they are going to honor its obligations under the RP-US Mutual Defense Treaty, which states that “an armed attack in the Pacific Area on either of the Parties would be dangerous to its own peace and safety and declares that it would act to meet the common dangers in accordance with its constitutional processes.” -- With a report from Agence France-Presse

he he he, we're back in town.

A big 'Thank You' to China for giving the Big Daddy USA a reason to come back to the region. And, also for bolstering US-Philippine relations. Our relations were souring a couple of years ago, now, it's back to square 1.

Keep it up, China! You're containing yourself. The louder you guys bark, the more of your neighbors are coming to party with Big Daddy USA. :smokin:

Obviously this is a "black message" of US sent to China. According to some other news, Uncle Sam will continue to send war vessels to PH in the near future...

We are re-establishing our old military ties with the Philippines. We are bolstering the Philippine Navy with a 2nd Hamilton Class cutter, and in addition, providing their navy with an updated radar grid. There are also plans for the provision of surface to air missile battery systems and more.

One is docked..How many are lurking around...? Generals of a particular countries wont be pleased by this act of Americans..

1 is docked in Subic; there are probably some 25 to 30 lurking around the area. ;)

China forcing their neighbours to take USA help to counter them....
Maybe, We also force you india to buy more weapon from other countries, Sometimes, I think that whether the defence companies should send bonus to china?

Yes, we know, there are more than 60 china submarine around the area, and I require you send more weapon to Philippine, Don't just send the antique to them, and you'd better advice them that they should call them coast guard vessel, not NAVY!

Seems a bit exagerated number, especially with a lot of them probably being near the Gulf.

Not exaggerated at all, considering we have squadrons based in around our military base in Guam. Subs normally make routine patrols in around the West Pacific; the South China Sea is also within our realm of responsibility. Submarines of the 5th as well as the 7th fleet make regular rounds around that area.

During this situation, we have a least 15- 20 patrolling the depths of the Scarborough Shoal and surrounding regions.

Just 2 player same USS North Carolina at Scarborough Shoal is too enough.
I heard the second, USS Tucon, intended dock Subic on 19/5, but was canceled. Perhaps it is somewhere near Scarborough Shoal....

Second US nuclear sub cancels port visit in Subic « News in Subic, Olongapo, Bataan, Zambales

Trust me, there are more than 20 lurking around. And I'm talking about nuclear attack submarines not regular "diesel" class. lol.

The inconsistencies of the Chinese government is observed in its two-faced agenda. What is inconsistent is their relegation of trade with neighbouring ASEAN countries , yet at the same time, use a forceful hand to bully much weaker "trading partners" and if these much weaker countries do not recognize Chinese unilateral territorial demands, will easily revoke the said trade. Case in point , the Chinese banning of Philippine-grown bananas after the Scarborough Shoal standoff. The Chinese government is duplicitous in its actions. They are also trying to cease travel visits to the Philippines; in an attempt to negatively affect the Philippine's economy for Manila's legitimate actions in protecting its territorial integrity.

It is absolutely clear that the 5th and the 7th Fleets will be active in the region in the indefinite future. The Philippines will become a major Naval base of operations for the United States in the Pacific. Chinese aggressive tone has inundated her relations with her neighbors and have been beneficial for US-Philippine strategic relations.

Keep it up China; you're providing the exact reason for US Military shift to Asia-Pacific. The US Military High Command will milk this situation for all its worth.

US has 53 attack subs. Take into account that at least 20% of those are in port at all times due to rotation, replenishment, maintenance.
That's ~12 subs.
Add assignments in the Atlantic (admittedly i do not know the number), assignments around CONUS and the presence around the Gulf and 30 subs like you originally stated seems a bit too much, not to mention an overkill. They would be snooping on themselves if that many were there (joke) :P
Also, each carrier group/fleet has 2 escorts?

No, you are incorrect. There are 60 Los Angeles class attack submarines, there is also 18 Ohio-Class, another 3 Seawolf class and we are currently building 30 Virginia Class subs. That puts some 83 active attack subs for the US Navy. We currently also just built 9 Virginia attack submarines, we are building 5 with a total plan of some 30 to be completed.

So, that puts the TOTAL submarines actively being used in the US Navy at 92.

I stand, we have some 20 subs in around the Western Pacific.

The Arabian Gulf is not just under the care of the US Navy, but there is joint cooperation with NATO's naval wing.
