US army reports 32 suicides in June

Updated at: 1558 PST, Saturday, July 17, 2010
US army reports 32 suicides in June WASHINGTON: U.S. Army suffered 32 suicides in June, the highest number for a single month since January 2009, when the suicide rate in the Army began to spike.

The boost in the number of suicides in June was likely driven by the "continued stresses on the force" caused by the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, said Col. Chris Philbrick, the director of the Army's suicide prevention task force.

The June numbers, however, represent a disappointing setback and suggest that, after nine years of combat, the Army is showing some serious signs of strain. The results from the first two weeks of July suggest that the suicide rate for this month will not be as high.

In the first six months of the year, 80 active-duty soldiers committed suicide or are suspected of having committed suicide, down from 88 in the same period last year. The Army National Guard, by contrast, had 65 suicides in the first six months, up from 42 in that period last year.

The Army's suicide rate in 2009 exceeded the rate among civilians for the first time in decades.

The total number of Army suicides in June was about the same as the number of Army troops killed in Afghanistan last month, the deadliest month of the war for U.S. and NATO forces.

well i did not understand why they commit suicide?
Do they not have an option to take a break/holidays (or if fed up) leaving the army at all?

What if the person wants to quit army?

Well for US soliders its a big sacrafice to leave behind a luxurious life and lifestyle ...

Imgine one min you are with friends , driving a car, watching football and sports and enjoying life and then due to some executive decision you are in Afghanistan of all the places as barren and dray as Martian soil .....

For what to catch some sheep herders -

And then to get stuck in there because the admininstration can't make the call to bring back ppl

Russia is ready to pounce on Afghanistan like in 80's and the terrorist are still at large....

Its tough situation ..Its always hard for someone who enjoyed a better life to leave it behind vs some taliban guy who lived like that whole his life

life of course is precious comodity but what I mean to say is the psycalogical aspects are greater

To make it worse there is no KFC , McDonalds or fast food that soliders wanted to keep them conncted to home again some executive decision ....I had read about it
in some article that army was closing its branch to supply freshly cooked meals for solidiers ...

One of the things I noticed about US is that in Viet nam they lacked a exit strategy and now they lack it as well -

If US would trust Pakistan - I mean real way with weapons and NATO ally then we could launch joint operation 100,000 soliders into Afghanistan -

We should have going in together into this as partners - that is just my say in matter I think US / Pakistan should launch a decisive operation "END IT ALL" and just get it done

I strongly feel that instead of drones if Pakistan and US went in 100,000 soliders the war would end decicively in victory in 12 months - not 10 year thing ...

Why train Afghan army ?? They are currupt just make Afghanistan a province of Pakistan - Russia is not gona enter pakistan territory

If I was US prez I would have given Pakistan 70 F16 , asked for 100,000 troops from Pakistan and sent in 200,000 troops from US , and then launched a door to door operation and confiscated all weapons ...

and Kicked out Indian Embassy and Russian influence in region -

32 in one month? Thats more one than death per day! Thats probably the highest suicide rate in any army, at any time in history. Such news should be framed and posted on the wall White House and Pentagon where best of US minds sit and decide who to FCUK next. Let them read and understand how much they have fucked themselves already. :usflag:

Thank you Graphican for your concern. You are a true friend to the USA servicenman. I'm sure their hearts would be warmed by your remarks if they only knew of the PDF and followed your wonderful commentary.

PS, How do you say "jerk" in Urdu?

Pakistan's national Interest and regional Interest is that we invest into this war , alot of ppl do not realize how much the US forces invest in order to minimize civilian casualties

But sadly some incidents have happened which is sad but its a war ... but US has always been there in some form for Pakistan

But I think the right approach is to send in 100,000 -200,000 strong force in joint mission to end the situation It must be a joint US /Pakistan initiative

I don't think US is in Afghanistan on any other mission then to just make sure Al Qaida is neutralized because they are on a dangerous mission to destabalize all gov in region.

And they have been also involved in SriLankan cricket team incident and of course Mumbai

But I hope that some where in Obama administration tells him to start a join campaign with Pakistan forces

It would be a new chapter in Pakistan / US alliance

Seeing these lawless criminals dictating life in Afghanistan is sickening really virtue of gun so we need to bring them to justice or the very least help end it and help to educated them

It would be exciting if that is what Ms Clinton is in Pakistan to discuss it would be a bold move I hope and no more nonesens drone strikes

The sweetest and simplest word is "Muthal". It has same insulting feeling and its quite a good slap in one word.

Anyway, I am not friendly towards America and I often humiliate it to express my discontentment towards its flawed policies and double standards. I want sense, equality and justice to prevail in the world and if America would strive to establish that, I would really consider myself a friend of US and its Servicemen. Until that happens, I will keep moaning the death of humans but keep enjoying the defeat and humiliation that mindless policies of America receives. For the loss of soldiers who comity suicide, I am indeed at grief!

Sorry Graphican that was not an insulting word. Let me translate that for truthseeker. Muthal translates to someone who masturbates often and as masturbation is frowned upon by conservative religious circles, it is in their opinion an insulting word regardless of the fact that masturbation is a natural instinct common to nearly all animals (at least the ones with high intelligence).

Perhaps the entomology of "jerk" is as you say. I'm not sure. But if that is what one was trying to say, then they would say "you jerk-off". I was using "jerk" as a synonym for a$$hole. So how do you say "a$$hole in urdu?

. . .
i thought russian millitery had the highest number of suicide cases. The stress factor in deployed troops is very high, even in our own millitery sometimes we come across such incidents but the numbers are limited to 2 per year.

Guys fighting on field should be given leave or something to go back and spend some time with his/her family.

War stress forcing US soldiers to kill themselves By Anwar Iqbal

Roadside bombs kill four Nato troops in Afghanistan Roadside bombs kill four Nato troops in Afghanistan WASHINGTON: More American soldiers killed themselves last month than in any month in the recent history of the US Army, says an official military report.

US military officials have acknowledged that the grim trend may be linked to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The latest statistics released by the US Army show that 32 soldiers killed themselves in June, the highest number in a single month since the Vietnam era. Twenty-one of them were on active duty, while 11 were in the National Guard or Army Reserve in an inactive status. Although only seven soldiers killed themselves while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, many other suicides were directly or indirectly linked to the two wars.

A 2007 study identified failed personal relationships, legal and financial problems and job stress as common causes triggering suicides among soldiers deployed in a war zone, returning from there or awaiting deployment.

Last year, US Army experts warned that soldiers were under tremendous, unprecedented stress because of repeated deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The director of the US Army’s suicide prevention task force, Col Chris Philbrick, while talking to the media, endorsed the link between the two wars and a spike in the suicide rate.

The boost in the number of suicides in June was likely driven by the “continued stresses on the force” caused by the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, he said.

The suicide rate in the army began to spike in January 2009, the eighth year of US engagement in Afghanistan. The army’s suicide rate in 2009 exceeded the rate among civilians for the first time in decades.

“After nine years of combat, the army is showing some serious signs of strain,” noted the Washington Post while commenting on the trend.

The army also said that there were 88 suicides among active duty members in the first six months of last year. In the first half of this year, the army reported 80 suicides among active duty members.

This week the US Army released a new video that addresses the subject of suicides and includes testimonials from soldiers who have struggled with the urge to take their own lives.

Last year was the worst for the US Army in terms of suicides with 244 confirmed or suspected cases despite the adoption of a range of initiatives by the army to try to contain the problem.
