US approves new missile deals for Indonesia, Malaysia

Thats the Japanese Navy?

Yes, I was in the army.

Actually the F-16 Blk52+ are the primary air defence fighters. JF 17 provide the back up.

The latest thing the PAF has been working on is the JF17 + SD10 coupled with the AWACS into a formidable BVR solution, with the F16's for WVR .

Ah, I remember reading about the sale of the SD10 + AWACS, definitely a great platform .

Army guy ! I do recollect reading how you mentioned a friend of yours carried you when you were injured in the field ? I remember you posted a thread about a chinese schoolboy who carried his friend who was struck with multiple sclerosis ....and you mentioned your personal experience in the field....

The level of cooperation between USA and ID, MY ... already better than USA and Vietnam.
at this moment.

Good news to our ASEAN members who are SCS claimants at the same time.

Vietnam still must rely on Russian weapons with missiles like KH-59MK for example.

Vietnam left to be the only SCS claimant has no US lethal weapons

Time to diversify your portfolio. Vietnam needs to build its fiduciary relationship with other relevant powers.... :)

F16 is the main fighter of Pakistan used to fight India air force,
while JF17 is a low end multi-function fighter.

JF17 is not so good as F16 in air combat.
Yet it can be made in Pakistan and equip with multip-function weapons.
It is cheap and does not worry about replacement and supply, while F16 is hard to re-supply.

The JF-17 is the primary attack fighter, yes? And I'm assuming the F-16s are placed on reserve?
Served in the JMSDF, buddy. Did you serve also?

.
Because during the soviet era, nuclear capable ballistic missile just means it is highly inaccurate and useless with a conventional warhead, true story. :coffee:
We can upgrade it later, VN Shaddock & Scud have better accuracy now:pop:

.
AWACS is the key of air fight...
Also do you know if India air force has any BVR capacity?
What is their long-range air to air missile? equipped by Su 30?

Thanks for the clarification, @hans .

Why not selling some good nuke capable ballistic missile like what Soviet sold to VN ??:pop:
LOL ... if do that, the U.S will more looks like former Soviet Union, and Vietnam more looks like today Cube ... a copy of 1960s "Cube Missile Crisis".

Excellent! Tho its sad to see that our Philippine partners have yet to tap into the potential of the AIM-120C7 AMRAAM and AIM-9X2.

We have lost the capability to use advance weapons after our Air Force's capability deteriorated and was (and still) restricted for close-air support roles, and even that is also deteriorating...

Well yes and no. F16 parts today are quite easy to find, unlike in the '90s This is one reason why PAF is aggressively pursuing getting second hand F16's as well.

Secondly, JF17 is a good multi-role aircraft like you said, the intent was to have a cost effective, reliable work horse to replace the mirage and the migs. Good thing about it is that it's a good 2nd tier a/c that can be used for BVR engagements as well. On the WVR front, it is better then the mirages and migs it replaces, BUT not as good as the F16.

@Windjammer Can you please answer this gentleman?
Both India and Pakistan deploy AWACS.
The Indian SU-30 and other aircraft are equipped with a range of ''R'' series Russian BVR missiles with 100km+ range. But said to be much inferior to the combat proven American AIM-120 series which Pakistan deploys.

US approves sale of AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder missiles to Indonesia
Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
05 May 2015

The US Department of State has approved the possible sale of AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder missiles and associated components to Indonesia in a deal estimated to be worth USD47 million.

According to a statement by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 5 May, Indonesia has requested for a possible sale of 30 AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder Block II all-up-round missiles, 20 AIM-9X-2 captive air training missiles (CATM), two CATM-9X-2 Block II tactical missile guidance units, four CATM-9X-2 Block II guidance units, and two dummy air training missiles.

"Acquisition of the AIM-9X missile supports Indonesia's efforts to become a more capable defensive force and will also provide key elements required for interoperability with US forces," the DSCA statement said, adding that Indonesia should have no difficulty absorbing the missiles into its armed forces.

Principal contractor for the proposed sale will be Raytheon Missile Systems and there are no known offset requirements connected to the possible deal.

Bro long time no see :wave::wave::wave: How have you been?

Yes you are right. What initially came out in the media was only the operational missile part. Nothing on the training angle, which was surprising. Nonetheless here is the complete DSCA notification:

Transmittal No: 15-28
WASHINGTON, May 5, 2015 - The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to Indonesia for AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder Missiles and associated equipment, parts and logistical support for an estimated cost of $47 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today.

The Government of Indonesia has requested a possible sale of 30 AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder Block II All-Up-Round Missiles, 20 AIM-9X-2 Captive Air Training Missiles (CATM), 2 CATM-9X-2 Block II Tactical Missile Guidance Units, 4 CATM-9X-2 Block II Guidance Units, and 2 Dummy Air Training Missiles, containers, test sets and support equipment, spare and repair parts, publications and technical documents, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. Government and contractor technical assistance, and other related elements of logistics and program support. The estimated cost is $47 million.

This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy objectives and national security interests of the United States by making Indonesia more capable of defeating threats to regional stability and strengthening its homeland defense. It will lessen the probability that Indonesia will need to rely upon deployment of U.S. combat forces to maintain or restore stability in the region.

The proposed sale also will improve Indonesia’s capability in current and future coalition efforts. Acquisition of the AIM-9X missile supports Indonesia’s efforts to become a more capable defensive force and will also provide key elements required for interoperability with U.S. forces. Indonesia should have no difficulty absorbing this new capability into its armed forces.

The proposed sale of this weapon system will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

The principal contractor will be Raytheon Missile Systems Company in Tucson, Arizona. There are no known offset requirements in connection with this potential sale.
Implementation of this proposed sale may require the assignment of additional U.S. Government or contractor personnel to Indonesia on a temporary basis in conjunction with program technical and management oversight and support requirements.

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.

This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.
