side note: exxonmobil which ricks tillerson was the CEO until recently owns large percent of the qatar largest gas field

The massive Saudi armament program reeks of a militarisation prior to war. The Saudi clown prince has already said he wants to make it so there is war inside Iran, and there he goes buying $15 billion of weapons that specifically counter Iran's main deterrent (and no-one else's in the region). Saudi is preparing to go to war with Iran.

WASHINGTON: The US State Department has approved the possible sale of a THAAD anti-missile defense system to Saudi Arabia at an estimated cost of $15 billion, the Pentagon said on Friday.
The proposed sale “will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a friendly country” and will not alter the basic military balance in the region, the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation agency said in a statement.
Lockheed Martin Co. and Raytheon Co. are the principal contractors for THAAD or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense.

Kremlin:
King of Saudi Arabia and President of Russia discussed military cooperation between the two countries, military cooperation between Riyadh and Moscow should not worry other countries

# Kremlin: military cooperation between # Riyadh and # Moscow is not directed against a third country
# Kremlin: worries of Pentagon of Saudi Arabia buying the S-400 Russian system are groundless.
# Kremlin: The issue of military cooperation was on the agenda of the discussions between Russia and Saudi Arabia at the highest level, and we can not give you more details
# Kremlin: convinced that the development of Russian - Saudi cooperation is in the interest of the two countries in the first place, and in the interest of stability in the world and in the region.

Good news. Really a masterstroke from KSA (current administration) and it shows the clout. Not many countries would be able to negotiate deals like the ones signed/negotiated in the past 2-3 days.

I am not getting KSA. Are they in a war or something? Buying weapons like this doesn't make any sense.

Why are you spending billions on your military and trying to acquire more nuclear weapons? Why does Pakistan even have an army?

Sure. You think that a largely harmless, sanctioned, with a very outdated army, economic poor performing, Iran (for KSA) is a imminent threat? Could this have something to do with regional developments and possibly other regional competitors? Or just the fact that KSA wants to be as prepared as possible in case of any threats to our safety and national interests?

You rather go worry about your clownish Wannabe Arab Sayyid's and their empty rhetoric.

Good. We should have as cordial ties as possible to China (our largest trading partner), US and Russia. I like the current pragmatic policy in this regard and it will be beneficial for us.

.
KSA should diversify, it's relying too much on USA which has been proven unreliable partner.

Diversity what? You do realize that KSA's largest trading partner is China. That we have cordial ties with the likes of UK, France, Spain (most of Europe basically), South Korea, Japan, Russia and most of the Muslim world expect for Iran and currently Qatar (will be solved soon)? We even have cordial ties with many African nations and those ties are growing.

KSA is the country that arguably has the most pragmatic policy of any Muslim country in terms of dealing with foreign nations. How many countries in the world can say that they have close ties with China, USA and Russia?

We are diversifying. The Russian deals, our close cooperation with Ukraine (Antonov), Spain (you will hear some news soon) and many other nations.

Sure, US is the main military partner but we cannot be blamed for that as they have the best products and so far have proven to be reliable in this regard. There is close cooperation with them too (Lockheed Martin etc.) when it comes to localization efforts which will only grow after Saudi Vision 2030.

This below really says it all:

"the Kingdom sees in Russia an important friend looking to be a partner and ally.
To bring this about, Saudi Arabia will sign huge deals in technology, renewable energy, nuclear plants for civilian purposes, and infrastructure. Riyadh is interested in nationalizing the weapons industry, signing contracts to buy weapons and obtaining new technologies, such as the S-400 missile system.
In addition, both countries must work closely together to reach an agreement between the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and non-OPEC oil producers in order to cut global output and boost prices."

Saudi military industries will be among the top 10 military industrial companies in the world and will initially invest more than 5 billion in scientific research..That means a lot..
The first step has been taken and after the transfer of these weapons technologies, the company will move on to manufacture other systems..

Some pats of the S-400 crucially.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The S-400 will be for air defense of the regions with 14 battalions
If this is the follow up of the deal that was negotiated in 2009,
A large enough number sufficient to cover the skies of Saudi Arabia in full..

I was saying in military hardware terms. And how it has been proven reliable? So far you haven't been in position where you need spare and supplies and US continued doing so.

Just desperately trying to keep Saudi Arabia in American camp.

The S-400 system has no exo-atmospheric capability - More certain interception and without any risk of chemical or nuclear fallouts -.

And it has never been demonstrated its ability to intercept IRBM ballistic missile.

With all due respect have you been sleeping for the past 1-2 years or just in the past week? Have you not seen all the promising deals signed with China (UAV's manufactured locally), Ukraine (Antonov), localization efforts (Antonov will open an aircraft factory in Tai'f soon), Sikorsky Black Hawk Helicopters etc. will be manufactured locally in KSA and many other news.

This is all the very beginning. Much more is to come.

See the post that I just wrote above.

Saudi Arabia Signs Agreement With Russia To Buy S-400 Air Defence System, Other Weapons

putin_1507213417.jpg

Russian President Putin and Saudi King Salman: Sputnik Photo

The Saudi Arabia Ministry of Defense signed contracts with the Russian government to procure the S-400 air defense system, the Kornet-EM system, the TOS-1A, the AGS-30 and the Kalashnikov AK-103.

As part of the agreement signed in Moscow today, Russia will transfer technology and localize the manufacturing and sustainment of these armament systems in the Kingdom, a press statement from the Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) said.

Consequent to the agreement, SAMI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a General Terms and Conditions Contract with ROSOBORONEXPORT, Russia’s state company for exporting military products.

The MOU focuses on localizing the manufacturing and sustainment of advance armament systems in Saudi Arabia. The MOU includes the transfer of technology for the local production of the Kornet-EM anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) system, the TOS-1A advanced multiple rocket launcher and AGS-30 automatic grenade launchers with grenades.

In addition, the parties will cooperate in setting a plan to localize the manufacturing and sustainment of parts of the S-400 air defense system.

The General Terms Contract covers the local production of the Kalashnikov AK-103 and its ammunition which will contribute to raising the local content and enhancing self-sufficiency in line with the Saudi government's Vision 2030.

The agreements also include educational and training programs for Saudi nationals to ensure the sustainability and development of the military industries sector in Saudi Arabia. These agreements are expected to have tangible economic contributions and create hundreds of direct jobs.

It will also transfer cutting edge technologies that will act as a catalyst for localizing 50% of the Kingdom’s military spending as targeted by Vision 2030.

The enemies of KSA are shaking in their boots. One masterful move and they've been confounded!

They sure are. From "our North Korean missiles based on old USSR technology and ancient air force will destroy you completely" to "why are you buying all this, why are you trying to diversify, why are you starting to localize your military industry". Funny shit to put it mildly.

USA will never back tiny Qatar over KSA (the de facto ruler of the GCC and region). Tillerson or no Tillerson. Al-Udeid or no Al-Udeid. The US relies on KSA in the region. Counter-terrorism, economy, military and not at least wanting to have good ties with KSA (Arab world and Muslim world = Makkah and Madinah). It makes no sense for the US to be hostile to KSA or lose us to China or Russia (completely) but of course they are trying to do all their tricks in the book as usual. As any nation states that looks for its own interests first. US is just doing it on a much bigger scale to basically everyone. But that will have an end one day as will everything else on this tiny earth.

That doesn't change the fact that KSA mainly rely on US for it's defensive and offensive capabilities. But anyway best of luck.
