Analog Devices Inc, the $1.7 billion US chip maker, has been allowed by the United States to re-start shipping chips to the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro).
Ashok Kamath, managing director, Analog Devices India, said the US State Department had accorded the company permission, two days ago, to start chip shipments to ISRO after a gap of three years.
We used to ship several million dollars worth of chips to ISRO before the State Department prohibited us from supplying to ISRO, he said.
Analog Devices was doing business worth $5 million per annum with ISRO before the shipments were stopped. The chips we sell to ISRO are used by them in their satellite transponders Kamath said. ISRO officials, Kamath said had been very happy at the news of the lifting of sanctions.
There is a huge backlog and we do not have any specific time frame to start shipments again. The chips we supply are customised and are made to order and hence it will take time, Kamath said.
Analog Devices which has had a presence in the Indian market for the last 20 years is also looking at increasing its chip shipments to the Indian electrical and telecom segments. Analog Devices provides chips for static energy meters in India and ships close to half a million chips every month to Indian electrical meter manufacturers.
The chips we make go into static energy meters that cannot be tampered and these meters cost half as much as traditional mechanical meters, he said.
Static meters do not having moving parts and cannot be tampered with unlike the Ferrari induction meters. Most state electricity boards in India report significant losses due to tampering of meters and large scale theft of electricity.
