Urdu was enforced on us, says Rabbani

It is good to promote regional languages, but there MUST be one language which every person in the country could understand. Nations do not progress without promoting one language in which every one in that nation can communicate. Urdu is a great language and almost everyone in Pakistan understands it.

Germans learnt this lesson in 18th century and promoted German as one language all around Germany (in the name of religion) and encouraging people to learn "Hochdeutsch" alongside their own dialects. That helped the country to overcome unnecessray conflicts and rest is history!

I personally feel that English is being enforced on almost every country in the world gives native English speaking countries (such as UK, USA) an unfair advantage over others. Countries like China, Japan and even smaller nations in Europe have learnt to appreciate their own languages and restricted English to be a foreign language (and not as a status symbol).

And almost all of them are progressing greatly without English being the primary langauge. Same way we should convert all our syllabus in Urdu and teach English only as a foreign language!

I 100% agree with you bro... With your logic, it should have been the most spoken language that should have been used as a single national language, not something that less than 10% people spoke. 56% of people spoke bengali when pakistan was formed in 1947.

All Dialects are part of German language, And german is an official language of many countries around Germany. Urdu was a dialect not core language like Hochdeutsch.

English became the language of communication because of colonisim. USA just spoke english as Brits were there too.
With your logic. Urdu with less than 10% that too just because of people who migrated came to Pakistan can be comparied as forigen language in mid 20th centrury.

Do you know what first and second languages are?

No i don't ... i'm from mars... :azn:

Article posted was for % of urdu speakers in Pakistan.

Hardly 6% people can speak Urdu in Pakistan at initial stages Vs 40% Hindi in India.

Actually Punjabi in Pak deserve national language.

UP Gundas imposed their language on poor pakistanis. There is a small meaning if Arabic or Persian enforced in Pak but Urdu!!

Prove your statement

Explanation for stupids :cheesy:

Hardly 6% people could speak Urdu in Pakistan at initial stages....means in 1940 and 50's only 6% Mohajirs known Urdu not Punjabis,Sindhis,Balochis and Pakthuns.

It is 8% not 6%

According to the CIA Factbook, nearly half of Pakistanis speak Punjabi, the language of the Punjab region, while only 8% speak Urdu. Several other languages are spoken by a fraction of the population.

Come on guys, you are Indians not Americans or Europeans to whom such things should be explained. Just open your mind and think a little bit

Almost all the population of Pakistan can understand Urdu, yes they dont speak it but they surely do understand it. Hence it was named our National Language. Punjabi is definitely the most popular language in Pakistan but ppl have difficulty understanding it. These 6%, 8% ppl speak Urdu is just :blah: :blah: :blah:

The statement of "Urdu was forced upon us" from Rabbani is just a cheap political stunt meant to please the Sindhis who are not as well of as Punjabis/Muhajirs(Urdu speaking). This has more to do with securing Nationalist votes than being a cultural/political problem

What could have/should have been is past already. Majority of us on PDF were not even born back then almost 70 years ago.

The fact is that Urdu is our national language and is understood and loved by vast majority of Pakistanis (more than 70% can speak it at various communication levels and more than 80% understand it. I would say), even if it is not their mother language. My case is the same, even though Urdu is not my mother langauge, but I just love it and own it as my national language!

Besides Urdu is a sweet and great literary language, you have to read Ghalib, Mir Taqi Mir, Allama Iqbal, Faiz and thousands of other poets to understand that.

As far as German is concerned, only one German language "Hochdeutsch" is Lingua Franca and is taught in schools/universities. Other dialects like Schwäbish, Bayerisch etc are - even though still spoken regionally - not taught in schools etc.

Even if he is a kind of "Red" fan, he still promotes everything that can harm Pakistan and blocks everything that could benefit us.

Not even a true "Red" person, those people at least work for social equality and progress. He is just a confused, self-centered, attention seeking personality who often gets badly insulted by likes of Zardari. ( Zardari is on record calling him "Khas**").

These types of people should only be ignored.

These kind of people doesn't like even if someone else wear kind of branded shoes or dress like him, they feel provoked. This is exactly another RED kind I am talking about that we have in numbers, nowadays. Actually, these people always gets higher seats due to the same purpose of maligning institutes and the irony is, people votes them and still support them.

Is Raza muhajir? He says his mother tongue is urdu but needed to write book in English because he can't express himself in urdu. How? Muhajirs people urdu is pretty good, I've noticed they hardly use english words compared to others when speaking urdu.
Urdu while provided a quick recognition tool to Two nations theory, Urdu itself is technically a mixed language. From alphabets to about 99% of the words, all are borrowed from Hindi,English,Turkish and Farsi. Even the Mughals, the founders of Urdu, relegated it to a general language by put the Farsi as Royal as well as official language. English did the same. Urdu was orphaned by its own speakers as none bothered developing the language's own unique vocabulary . Even for the most unique word in Urdu (Zala Bari), when I tried to locate its origins, it turned out to be a Persian word, even the easy urdu of it (Aula) turned out to be a hindi word. The other languages didn't suffer from it to the extent urdu did as they developed their own Alphabets and/or Vocabulary. In Pakistan we use the arabic alphabets but in India they use sansikrats which speaks a lot about the uniqueness of the language as a whole. Had it not been the work of poets and authors, the language would have been assimilated into other regional languages.
