Urdu should be replaced with Farsi - Interesting Read

You are right we are bad because we are not adopting our mother tongue. All over the world medium of instruction in schools and universities is in language which is spoken by the kids. It is only the slaves who are teaching their kids the language of their masters. China is an example they can hardly speak English but they are ruling the world now.

Strange, you say we shouldn't learn english, but tell me, What language are we speaking right now? Which language is the language of business? Of Economics? Of literature? China rules the world for many different reason, and language is definitely not one of them lol. :disagree:

.
Instead of changing Urdu to Farsi in Pakistan you gusy should ask iranian to change Farsi to Urdu, which would make more sense to me if I were a pakistani. :-)

Thats because Bangladesh has only one major language...Bangla.

Pakistan has Urdu, Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi, Sariaki, Baluchi, Hindko, Pahari, Pothwari, Kashmiri, etc..

Where did I say dont learn english. I think I should explain a bit more to make you understand. English is the language of buisness thats it. England had a very big empire and unlike you they spread their language. After colonial era english speaking countries were rich and powerful a lot of trade went through them so a lot of people learned english for doing buisness. Now people are learning Chinese because a lot of trade is going through china and it will only increase.

You are right Language is not the reason for progress but quality education is and it is best achieved in the language in which teachers can convey their message and students can understand. This is hardly the case in pakistan. In a lot of areas people still have problem even with urdu just watch the interviews of the people in sawat and you will know for your self. Then there is a factor of IDENTITY AND CONFIDENCEwhich comes with language. Teaching your kids language of some one else just makes them confused and takes off a lot of confidence from them as a nation.
I think even urdu literature is better than english. Ghalib, Iqbal faiz meer soda and so on. never found anything even close in english to what these greats have to offer.

You can't have five national languages. The whole point of Urdu is to unite the country and define a common heritage.

Brother forcing urdu was one of the main reason of creation of bangladesh. Pashtoons sindhis and balochs are also very sensitive on these issues. Nationalist parties in these areas are very popular and language plays a major role here. Denying ones identity will not bring any thing common.

.
If anything than wouldn't it make more sense to make Arabic as a state language of "Islamic republic of Pakistan" instead of Farsi. It is common to all one way or other because of Islam. Farsi is beautiful language but Arabic will be easier to adopt by common Pakistani. :)

Arabic should have been chosen as a state language of United Pakistan. Bengali nationalist would not have revolted and if they did than they would have been squashed to ground. :smokin:

The achievement of forcing Urdu on every one gave us Bangladesh. This perception that if we will have pashto, sindi, balochi languages pakistan will disintegrate is only in Punjab. Other provinces want their languages to be taught and be alive again. Pakistani Punjabis are the only ones in the world and i mean only in the world who are killing their own language. I have seen some people who were not speaking punjabi infront of their kids just because (according to them) its not civilized.

Nothing wrong with learning each province's language but our country has traditionally suffered from lack of unity and a sense of national identity. Having one language makes it easier for people to move around the country and to conduct business on a national scale.

I only know of two countries which have disparate languages:
- India has Hindi, Tamil, Bengali etc., but they use English as a common language. Indians from the south or the east rarely speak Hindi even if they know it. It's always English.
- Switzerland has German, French, Italian (and Romanche). But most Swiss learn all three major languages.

I have another idea...

The reason Pakistan's education infrastructure is broken is because some people are forced to learn things in English. Yes its good especially for Business and Commerce students but everything doesn't have to be in English.

They should make Urdu mandatory for EVERYTHING. Even people who are perusing their Masters, Doctoral, Bachelor's everything should be in Urdu and should be forced to study everything in Urdu as well. Allow me to elaborate on this as well..

Japan -- Almost ALL their Education is in Japanese from doctoral, Masters, bachelors, everything is in Japanese.

Germany -- Almost ALL their Education is in German from Doctoral, Masters, Bachelors and everything. My brother just came from Berlin and he said that he went to a major bookstore and found 1 English on the third floor.

France -- Everything is in French, including Commerce
China -- Again almost everything is in Chinese, bachelors, high school, masters, phd's, etc

Sweden-- Swedes have the option of getting all their education both in local as well as English.

Russia-- Everything is in Russian from high school, bachelors, masters, doctoral..

Pakistan should have EVERYTHING in Urdu, its our national language. In our schools we only have one Urdu class and the rest everything is in English. This later down the road creates alot of problems for students who speak urdu all their lives and are forced to study things in English. A Doctor who studied everything in Urdu is no different than a Doctor who studied everything in English. Language Should NOT be a barrier. Our people get confused after high school and can't decide where to go, what to do.

Commerce and Business Education is the only place where i believe English should be mandatory because English is the global language of Commerce. I remember my Aunt who couldn't really speak English really well had to drop out of her bachelors way way back in the day simply because she was forced to study things in English which she could have easily studied in Urdu.

1/3 of our people can't even write Urdu the other 1/3 Can't write english the other 1/3 can't write neither..

Urdu should be made mandatory and ALL courses should be taken in Urdu all the way to PHD. All foreign books should be translated in Urdu as well, If you want to study in English you are more than welcome to do so.. that's the way it should be.. All major developed countries have all their Senior level education in their local language and its painful that we don't.
-----------------------

As far as Farsi goes, it would be great I find Farsi to be a lot more attractive than Arabic. Being from Peshawar i've already picked up a few words lol, but i definitely don't mind learning the whole thing.. right now i am trying to learn french but our mother tongue simply won't allow us to pronounce french words so its very very hard for me and i am close to giving up.. I do pronounce Italian sentences almost perfectly though

I agree that all education should be in Urdu but I don't see why we can't require all our kids to be fluent in English.

Like it or not, English is the world language. Yes, China, France, Germany and Japan do everything locally in their native language but, in international ventures, the language is almost always English.

Look at it this way. We will need to work with foreign countries. Now we could learn Chinese or French or German or Japanese on a need-by-need basis. Or we can learn English and communicate with everyone else.

English is also a helpful for foreign investment in the service sector. China is the world's factory but India is becoming the world's office precisely because they speak English.

Definitely i am not saying that we boycott English.. Like i said English is the language of commerce and yes of course English is important.. but the amount of English that we emphasize on while completely neglecting the community that speak and are fluent in Urdu is merely putting our young youth at a disadvantage. Of course citizens should be free to pursue what they deem fit.. but we have to eradicate this mentality in Pakistan where people say

'mera bacha tu jee English medium school mein partha hai'

This mentality is in itself stupid and ignorant... A Doctor who gets his medical degree in Urdu should be no different than one who gets his medical degree in English. Just like a French Doctor who can barely speak English is well qualified so is the Doctor who gets his certificate in Urdu...

^^Fracker! It is you who have no idea about similarity of farsi and urdu.
Basically it depends on your know how of urdu words.

well, similarly if you listen geeta you will have same feeling.. and also while you are standing in some arab land. Basically the script of farsi is pretty close to urdu. you can take a look in english and scotish.. may be both has same script but when you speak to some scotish you hardly understand what he is saying (when i was in new castle upon tyne (england). I really had very hard time in understanding what they are saying).. but when it comes to writing it was completely same.. same why i meet many farsibans, and couldn't understand what they were saying.. but when i go to some irani website i can understand somewhat what is written.

I think language is more for communication between two people, but very less in writing (Pakistan's literacy rate is around 50+). So if we make farsi as national language then half of the country will stop understand everything going around.

I also agree farsi is rich culture, that's why many of our poets use it for poetry.. BUT what ever you say, urdu is more richer in vocabulary then farsi, since it is derived from arabic, sansikrit and farsi. So you can use their verbs in urdu when ever you like. & most important we are happy with urdu why to change it?

Here are some interesting remarks about Urdu made in 1951 by H. H. Sir Sultan Mohammed Shah Aga Khan at a session of Motamer al-Alam-al-Islamiyya. (source) He was actually arguing in favour of Arabic.

Was Urdu the language of the Muslims of India at the time of their glory? During the long Pathan period, Urdu was never considered the language of the rulers. Now we come to the Moghul Empire in the period of its glory. It was not the language of the educated. I defy anybody to produce a letter or any other form of writing by Emperors Aurangzeb, Shah Jehan, Jehangir, Akbar, Humayun or Babar in Urdu language. All that was spoken at the Court was Persian or occasional Turkish. I have read many of the writings of Aurangzeb and they are in beautiful Persian. Same is true if you go to the Taj Mahal and read what is written on the tombs of the Emperor and his famous consort. Persian was the court language and the language of the educated and even till the early 19th century in far Bengal, the Hindu intelligentsia wrote and used Persian and not Urdu. Up to the time of Macaulay, Persian was the language of Bengali upper classes irrespective of faith and of official documents and various Sadar Adalat.

Historical Facts

We must look historical facts in the face. Urdu became the language of Muslim India after the downfall. It is a language associated with the downfall. Its great poets are of the downfall period. The last and the greatest of them was lqbal, who with the inspiration of revival gave up Urdu poetry for Persian poetry. There was a meeting in Iqbal’s honour in London organised by men such as Professor Nicholson.

I was present at that meeting. Iqbal said that he went in for Persian poetry because it was associated with the greatness of the Islamic epoch and not with its misfortunes. Is it right that the language of the downfall period should become the national language of what we hope now is a phoenix-like national rising? All the great masters of Urdu belong to the period of greatest depression and defeat. It was then a legitimate attempt by the use of a language of Hindi derivation with Arabic and Persian words to find ways and means of better understanding with the then majority fellow countrymen. Today that vast British dependency is partitioned and succeeded by two independent and great nations and the whole world hopes that both sides now accept partition as final.

Is it a natural and national language of the present population of Pakistan? Is it the language of Bengal where the majority of Muslims live? Is it what you. hear in the streets of Dacca or Chittagong? Is it the language of the North West Frontier? Is it the language of Sind? Is it the language of the Punjab? Certainly after the fall of the Moghal Empire, the Muslims and Hindus of certain areas found in it a common bond. But now today other forms of bridges must be found for mutual understanding.

Who were the creators of Urdu? What are the origins of Urdu? Where did it come from? The camp followers, the vast Hindi-speaking population attached to the Imperial Court who adapted, as they went along, more Arabic and Persian words into the syntax of their own language just as in later days the English words such as glass and cup became part of a new form of Urdu called Hindustani.

Are you going to make the language of the Camp, or of the Court, the national language of your new-born realm?

I think it is better to have arabic then persian (if you are looking for change, otherwise we are happy with Urdu) because it will help us (muslims) to understand Quran, & hadith. & certainly try to worship Allah better then 2day we do, which is actually our main goal of life (As per Quran).
