British police said on Tuesday they had opened an investigation into a package containing uranium that was seized at London’s Heathrow Airport.

The package was discovered by border agents during a routine search on December 29, police said.

The package had originated in Pakistan and arrived on a flight from Oman, according to The Sun, which first reported the story.

The uranium was found in a shipment of scrap metal and investigators were looking into whether it was the result of “poor handling” in Pakistan, the BBC reported.

“I want to reassure the public that the amount of contaminated material was extremely small and has been assessed by experts as posing no threat to the public,” police commander Richard Smith said in a statement to British media.

“Although our investigation remains ongoing, from our inquiries so far, it does not appear to be linked to any direct threat.”

in scap metal. so the shipment was via cargo.
questions

weapons grade or commercial?
origin of uranium?
final destination?
recipients?

then speculate, ( with or without bothering to fact check)

if originated from elsewhere?
smuggling? terror plot? criminal negligence? size of cargo?

from news appears its a random check bur seems there was a tip off.one needs giggers etc to detect uranium.

whataboutism will degrade any good discussion

I somewhat disagree that it was a tipoff.

It is known that British airports have radiation sensors and built in large-scale Geiger counters to scan luggage as it goes into aircraft and comes out.
It's very likely that it was noticed there, rather than it being a tipoff.

Also, Uranium rays are excellent at blocking gamma rays, which means that it could have been picked up when being X-rayed

I read this story on another site, and was left confused as to whether they found Uranium itself, or traces/contamination of Uranium on some other material.

Both have completely different connotations. Uranium itself means something very serious, traces of Uranium on another material means lax handling procedures, which is serious in itself but not quite on the same level.

From what I understood, the package was first shipped to Oman and then put on a flight.

The Uranium was not weapons grade. Origin was Pakistan, and final destination was an 'Iranian linked' company in the UK, which did not declare Uranium being in the consignment.

So cat is out of the bag.
Pakistan cannot handle nuclear materials so like Ukraine give it up so India can attack ... ummm. The games begin

LOL To make it even sweeter, these are the same Brits that helped PDM to power.

to let everyone know "the Sun" is UK tabloid paper. specializing unsensational stories, jingoism , Islamic terror and all that.
whenever it comes to Pakistan, everyone including our own will declare Pakistan guilty even if proven innocent in the end.

suggesting Iranian connection hits new highs of imagination. if someone is to send this material from Pakistan to Iran then it can be sent directly via Baluchistan on daily basis.

seems like the writer/ reporter bunched up Pakistan -- Bad, Iran -- Very Bad, Uranian--- Oh now our freedom in danger .. all together for all the Web analysist commander's and Web experts to feast on it. wait for the breaking news in the Indian tabloid media too.

if PTI was still in Govt, then noon league trolls including their second tier leadership would've been making snide remarks on Imran Khan and GHQ but since they are in Power so this heavy burden of barking on your own tree falls to PTI and we will be reminded once again why political engineering is bad for Pakistan (no disagreement there) but I don't know if this could prevent such incident.

by the way its all alleged at the moment. I suspect some creative story telling from British side. do they have radioactive monitoring equipment at hand all time to scan all cargo or was there a tip off.

by process of elimination I would go systematically

ask for more details from British authorities about the proof /detail of the claim and findings.
verify the origin of the shipment. if indeed it is radioactive , medical, commercial or military
is origin indeed Pakistan from Pakistan scrapyard it has a big shipbreaking operation sans all precautions and safety protocols,
is this Uranian from the Bollywood movie that the spy found from the hair of a scientist working from Pakistan nuclear program?
or all above is generous dose of horse, bull, and pig shit for those who just live to hate on Pakistan.

thanks for your input. will be great if you can share more information as well. like share some details from article of website detailing how UK screens the incoming cargo etc.

Weren't the Brits who facilitated PDM to power?

"Yaaar, give me a bigger bite!"

I find it hilarious how the Brits are now undermining the same PDM that they assisted to power.

Why is UK importing scrapped metal from Pakistan?

"Specialist scanners picked up on the undeclared parcel as it was transported to a freight shed"

Bag screening essentially uses something called a backscatter machine to "See" through luggage.(As seen below)
th

They can detect Waves such as Alpha and Beta particles emitted by Uranium, because the gamma rays that hit the uranium would be heavily scattered, causing a lot of black spots on the xray visual machine. That's the most likely way that the Uranium was detected.

I was incorrect about the geiger counters- rather, the Xray Machines have the capability to detect radioactive material instead

no point in whataboutism. Indians might be found 100 times smuggling and losing Uranian but that wont make news.
a fake news about Pakistan will make headlines and our own people will help to spread it.

this is the kind of discussion we used to have back in the days. people will talk beyond rhetorical one liners.

watch how this news progresses now. the Sun will build a story about a possible "dirty" bomb to be used by Islamic terrorists in UK, the Kings Coronation is also planned this May.

I know this for a fact that yes, cargo handling facilities in major UK airports, and some airports in the US do have radiation detectors through which all cargo has to pass. In some cases, even passenger baggage has to pass through these detectors.

The BBC article is the one I would go with, and it seems that some material was contaminated with Uranium rather than Uranium itself. It only quotes the Sun with the Pakistan link, and no Iranian link either. Let's see where this investigation ends.

The disintegration of the quality of the PDF is something that even I didn't realise until a couple of weeks ago.
It's definitely hit a new low, but I've also found that there are quite a few new posters who seem to be rational minded too, so my hopes are high for the reformation of standards here

Unfortunately, the story can get twisted pretty fast in the UK. I took a look at the MSN comments and can already feel a massive story of twisted perceptions being created. But such is the British Public. They do seem to dislike Muslims and are ready to pin the blame on them at a moment's notice.
