New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday suspended national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled Delhi BJP media in-charge Naveen Kumar Jindal over their controversial comments on Prophet Muhammad.

While Sharma was suspended from the party pending an inquiry, Jindal was ousted from the party.

The action, which came shortly after the BJP issued a statement denouncing insult to any religious personality, is said to be the fallout of the party’s growing unease over statements being made against Muslims. The BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was upset with Sharma’s statement made at a television debate. Twitter was abuzz with anti-India boycott calls from the Arab world, including from the likes of the Grand Mufti of Oman.

“You have expressed views contrary to the party’s position on various matters, which is in clear violation of Rule 10 (a) of constitution of the Bharatiya Janata Party. I have been directed to convey to you that pending further inquiry, you are suspended from the party and from your responsibilities/ assignments if any, with immediate effect,” read the notice issued to Sharma by the BJP’s central disciplinary committee.

In a letter to Jindal, Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta wrote that his view on social media to incite communal disharmony was against the basic thought of the party. “You worked against party ideology and policy. Therefore, your primary membership is ended with immediate effect and you are also suspended from the party,” it added.

ThePrint saw the contents of the letters sent to Sharma and Jindal.

Sharma, meanwhile, tweeted requesting the media and the people to not reveal her residential address. “There is a security threat to my family,” she tweeted. The BJP spokesperson also posted a message in which she apologised if anyone was hurt by her statement.

When ThePrint reached out to Jindal for his statement, the BJP leader said he has sought police protection. Like Sharma, he also apologised for his comment made on the social media.

Apart from the fallout of the unease over the controversial statements, the action is also being construed as an attempt to rein in leaders who have been “crossing the party’s official line on sensitive matters” and often embarrassing the party. Sources in the BJP said that the strict action against Sharma and Jindal is being seen as a damage-control exercise.

‘Against any hate ideology’

Earlier in the day, seeking to defuse the tension over the remark made by its spokespersons, the BJP issued a statement saying it ‘strongly denounces’ insult of any religious personalities. The party also stressed that it does not promote any ‘such people or philosophy’.

“In the history of India, every religion has blossomed and flourished. The BJP respects all religions. The BJP strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities of any religion. The BJP is also strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or philosophy,” party national general secretary Arun Singh said in the statement. The Constitution gives the right to every citizen to practice any religion of his/her choice and to honour and respect every religion, it said.

Several protests have taken place in which Muslims denounced Sharma’s views. On Friday, Kanpur saw communal clashes during a bandh called in to protest the derogatory remarks made by the BJP spokespersons.

At a Sangh event in Nagpur on Thursday, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat had called for amity between the Hindus and the Muslims, saying that there was no need to look for a ‘Shivling’ in every mosque. On Saturday, BJP president JP Nadda had met foreign envoys and interacted with them. Among those present for the interaction were the envoys from Russia, Cuba, Laos as well as those from Muslim-majority countries Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

Muslim countries have taken strong exception to derogatory remarks made against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by leaders of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Qatar, Kuwait and Iran summoning India's envoy to register their protest on Sunday.

Qatar has sought a public apology from India for allowing such "Islamophobic" views without retribution.

Kuwait, in a statement, said it had handed over an “official protest note expressing the State of Kuwait's categorical rejection and condemnation of the insulting statements against the Holy Prophet (PBUH), Islam and Muslims issued by one of the officials in the ruling party”.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also called out the comments made by the BJP leader and urged the world to take notice and reprimand India.

"... Have said it repeatedly that India under Modi is trampling religious freedoms & persecuting Muslims. World should take note & severely reprimand India."

He said the love of Muslims for the Prophet (PBUH) was supreme and they could sacrifice their lives for the Holy figure.

According to Hindustan Times, BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and another party leader, Naveen Kumar Jindal, made disrespectful remarks about the Prophet (PBUH) and after worldwide condemnation, India's ruling party had to distance itself from their statements, announcing disciplinary action against the duo.

Qatar summoned the Indian envoy and handed him an official note that expressed Qatar’s disappointment and “its total rejection and condemnation [of] the controversial remarks made by an official in the ruling party in India against Prophet Mohammed ... Islam and Muslims,” according to a statement issued by its foreign ministry.

Qatar said it is “expecting a public apology and immediate condemnation of these remarks from the Government of India”.

It noted that allowing such Islamophobic remarks to continue without punishment constituted a grave danger to the protection of human rights and may lead to further prejudice and marginalisation, which will create a cycle of violence and hate.

Meanwhile, Pakistan said the remarks made by two officials of the ruling BJP were "totally unacceptable" as they hurt the sentiments of billions of Muslims around the world.

"BJP’s attempted clarification and belated and perfunctory disciplinary action against these individuals cannot assuage the pain and anguish they have caused to the Muslim world," the Foreign Office said, urging India to ensure that decisive and demonstrable action was taken against those responsible for making derogatory remarks and attacking the dignity of Prophet (PBUH).

Pakistan also called upon the international community to take immediate cognisance of the "grievously aggravating situation of Islamophobia" in India.

The grand mufti of Oman, Sheikh Ahmad bin Hamad Al-Khalil, tweeted that the “obscene” comments of the spokesperson of India’s ruling party amounted to a “war against every Muslim”.

India told both Qatar and Kuwait that the offensive views did not reflect those of the government of India, instead attributing these to "fringe elements". It said that "strong action" had been taken against those responsible for the derogatory remarks.

BJP suspends party membership of leaders
Following a strong reaction from the Muslim countries, the ruling BJP suspended Sharma and expelled Jindal from the party for their remarks, according to Hindustan Times.

The statement issued by the party did not name anyone but it underlined that the party did not condone insults to any religion and respects all faiths.

“The Bharatiya Janata Party is also against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or philosophy…During the thousands of years of the history of India every religion has blossomed and flourished. The Bharatiya Janata Party respects all religions,” the statement said.

LOL notice how quickly grandpa Modi took action after Arab nations demanded an apology.

I hope translates into something economic, only then this will make a difference.

Arabs don't have to boycott Indian food items in Supermarkets.

All they have to do is shutoff crude oil supply to Modi's buddy Adani's refinery in Gujarat.

It will take less than a couple of weeks for Modi's govt. to crumble as petrol prices go sky-high in India.

Even Russia jumping in with their oil won't help Modi with that.

.
I pray this grows into a big issue and does not fizzle out.

Brahmins and Jews are one and the same, both operate in the same manner and have always had close relations with one another. The Indo-Israel relationship sums up the connections between Brahmins and Zionists.
