JAISALMER: The Army with the help of a team of Russian scientists are performing summer trials for the modified version of Russian tank T-72 in Jaisalmer's Lathi Field Firing Range. The summer trials will continue for one week. By the end of 12th Five Year plan, some armoured regiments will replace the T-72 with T-90 tanks. The rest of armoured regiments having T-72 tanks will undergo major modification such as introduction of an upgraded 1000 BHP engine and thermal imaging fire control system, said a defence laboratory official based at Jodhpur.

The Army recently commenced a project to upgrade its T-72M1 Main Battle Tanks. Over the past two decades, the T-72M1 has provided yeoman service to the Army. It is well liked by the Army for its ruggedness, low silhouette and weight (41.5 tons) as well as firepower. The T-72M1 is the backbone of the Indian armoured fleet with over 1700 tanks believed to be in service. Licence production of the tank was undertaken at the Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi, Tamil Nadu. To keep the tank fleet viable, an upgrade plan was drawn up by the Army. But during the early 1990s, the economy went through a tumultuous phase and the resulting fiscal problems forced these plans into abeyance.

Now the economy is on an upswing and the Army has hence been allocated funds to pursue this critical modernization. The tank upgrade will proceed in stages. The upgradation has begun by bringing 250 tanks to the DRDO's (Defence Research & Development Organisation) 'Combat Improved' Ajeya standard. (The T-72M1 has been renamed 'Ajeya' in India).

Defence spokesman Col S D Goswami said: "At present the main stay in terms of the number of India's armoured regiments is the T-72 tanks followed by T-55 tanks. The T-90 and Arjun provide the cutting edge. However, by the end of the 11th plan, all T-55 tanks will be replaced by T-90 tanks.

The original Russian engine in T-72 tanks had performed well in all climatic conditions.

. . .
This is just a waste of large amount of resources.Instead of upgrading those rusting tin junks they could have bought humdreds of brand new Arjuns which are light years ahead of these rustbuckets. But our army is the dumbest of all 3 branches. The soldiers loved the Arjuns so much but still our army is putting the valuable lives in great danger. These rust buckets can't even stand against the Al khalids, leave aside the Type 99s.Shame on our army, the top brass is worthless..

arjun is the heaviest tank our army has ever operated.
we need lighter tanks like t-90 and t-72s.

.
T-72 is old.

YES
But India will only upgrade the 950 T 72M1 which it acquired in early 1990s
1000 odd T 72 would be retired along with 550 odd T 55
these would be replaced by 900 T 90 and 248 Arjuns

So..???/ Ground pressure is whats important and funny thing is ground pressure of arjun is less than t90. We now have dedicated vehicles and wagons to transfer arjun wherever we want via road and railway. Arjun is much faster, more accurate, more comfortable and most importantly because of its armor and turret its way more safer and stronger than t90 and t72. I think IA should atleast replace the 550 t55 with Arjun....

.
If u guys dont know
but India acquired some 2418 T-72 tanks between 1978 and 1994

our current inventory of 1950 T 72 were acquired between 1986-94

In the last 10 yrs we have acquired 767 T 90 and 124 Arjuns , while we have retired like 450 T55 and 400 T 72

so my point is that u cannot just get rid of 2000 odd tanks without replacement being there in good numbers

Way wrong assumption dude......way wrong.950 have already been upgraded by DRDO.This order is for rest 1000 tanks. The T72 rustbuckets will remain inservice upto 2025 and then will be replaced by FMBT.
May GOD have mercy on our souls.

how did this happen , coz from what i know
G0I only sanctioned the upgrade of T 72 in 2008 after general Deepak Kapoor cribed about lack of night fighting capability among the T72 fleet

.
I think the remaining 600 T55s will be replaced with Arjuns as A.K.Antony has told in parliament, not with T90s.
I haven't seen such a dumb army anywhere else which despite of having plenty of resources and an advanced indigenous tank that can stand tod to toe against the most modern tanks, but still the topbrass is throwing our country and so many valuable lives of valiant soldiers in great danger.Shame on indian army..

No man.Under project Rhino 950 T72s have already been upgraded with new era,1000 hp engines, fire control computers and nvg equipments. This is for rest 1000
T 72s.
REGARDS....

.
it would be amazing if we manage to upgrade 1000 T 72 in 3 yrs

By the way i will stick with my assessment that we cannot scrap 2000 tanks without atleast having 1300 state of the art replacemet tanks already in fleet

T 72 will remain in fleet till FMBT enters service in large numbers , ie something like 600-800 in service
Thats coz we will need a large tank inventory to be capable of faceoff against PLA
and 1657 T-90 + 372 Arjuns will simply not be enough and would require backup of atleast 1300+ tanks
now considering the fact that we would induct like 900 T90 + 248 Arjuns in next 9 yrs ,
there is a high chance that we will still have 1400 T72 in service in 2020 , and possibly even 600 in service in 2030
