Befriend at least one Dalit family: Togadia - The Hindu

Starting Sunday, VHP chief Praveen Togadia will embark on a nationwide yatra to persuade upper caste Hindus to make friends with at least one Dalit family, among other things, and work towards eradicating untouchability from the country.

Under the ‘Hindu Parivaar Mitra’ campaign, Dr. Togadia said on Saturday, that he will ask upper caste Hindu families to “eat in their [Dalits’] kitchen, invite them to your kitchen...stand with them in their moment of joy and grief...go out to travel with them...this is the message we wish to convey.”

The VHP plans to showcase this caste bonhomie on social media using pictures taken by the families during such get-togethers.

The move is being perceived as the Sangh Parivar’s attempt at checking the increasing number of religious conversions by lower caste Hindus. This is the second instance where the Parivar is seen acknowledging factors within Hinduism as probable triggers for conversions.

Recently, Prabhu Narayan Shrivastava, the RSS’s Avadh prant Sanghchalak, admitted that untouchability and caste discrimination were responsible for Hindus converting to other religions.

However, Dr. Togadia denied religious conversions had motivated such a move. “We would have done it even if no conversions were happening,” he told The Hindu.

During his yatra, Dr. Togadia plans to reach out to 56,000 caste and sub-caste associations and have them pass resolutions against untouchability.

A senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader has said that the practice of untouchability and discrimination based on caste are responsible for the conversion of Hindus to religions like Islam and Christianity.

The RSS’s Awadh Prant Sanghchalak Prabhu Narayan Srivastava on Friday said Christians and Muslims were not to blame for the conversion of Hindus. He was addressing reporters about resolutions passed by the RSS at its All India Pratinidhi Sabha meeting in Nagpur recently.

Asked about the controversy over ‘ghar wapsi, the RSS’s aggressive ‘re-conversion’ programme to bring back Muslims and Christians to Hinduism, Srivastava said that untouchability and discrimination on caste lines promoted by the Hindu religion and society was a weakness that pushed the deprived sections to convert to other religions.
Srivastava said both ‘ghar wapsi’ (re-conversion) and ‘ghar chhodna’ (conversion) were wrong if done out of greed or under inducement. No one should be forced to either convert or re-convert, and the religious freedom of everyone must be protected, he said.

“Untouchability, today that is the reason for weakness in Hindu society. Only our society practices untouchability and discrimination. Christians and Muslims are not responsible,” Srivastava said.

Srivastava said the RSS was running programmes in slums to eradicate untouchability and discrimination, and to develop harmony in Hindu society. Harmony among religions and castes could be maintained only if the people of different religions and communities accepted that their ancestors were the same, and their mahapurush (great men) were common.

He added that India has blood relations with Pakistan and Bangladesh, and the taseer (essence) of soils, as well as their DNA, were the same.

Srivastava said the RSS had passed two resolutions – to welcome the decision of the United Nations to observe June 21 as International Yoga Day, and to appeal to all countrymen, including swayamsevaks. to play an effective role to establish the dignity of the mother language in education, day-to-day work and public affairs to achieve all-round development, national integrity and pride.

The RSS has appealed to parents to ensure their children receive elementary education in their own language.

The RSS’s Sah Prant Karyawah of the Awadh region, Narendra, spoke about the various programmes of the RSS including shakhas being organised at 1,020 places in the region. Over 5,000 people have applied online to join the RSS in Awadh over the last two years, he said.

Hinduism: the thousand year old religion, which is a way of life for hindus has its issues. Glad that ppl within RSS and other hindu groups 're addressing this issue.
For some personal reasons I always detested RSS but the points marked in bold (which i would call a broadminded approach) 've forced me to change my opinion about this group.

New Delhi: A senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader yesterday said that Christians and Muslims should not be blamed for the conversion of Hindus because practice of untouchability and discrimination based on caste are responsible for such conversions.

No one can deny that Muslims are responsible for all the Hindu conversion in Muslim rulers..Musilms conversion has happened more due to our faultline with Hindu caste systems...And of course outsiders Muslim rulers exploited it...
But i do not agree that Missionaries are not responsible...I have seen in close quarters, How missionaries convert by luring poor people to convert to Christianity...

AND if you think it never happened - check the multiple attacks and finally a successful assassination of Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati who worked for eliminating caste divisions in Hindu society in tribal regions.

He was killed. And NOT by Hindus.

He shared me that his grandfather had converted to Islam being a butcher by profession but rest of the brother of his grandfather had remained Hindu....
So the point is untouchability is biggest curse on Hindus as in old days few elites or thekedaar distorted the Varna system in their favor to maintain their higher social order...... This must be eradicated by hook or crook.... Untouchability has no place in 21st century.....

I agree...and i have already written couple of posts in the RSS and all their subsidaries about the future growth lies not to appease Non Hindus rather allow equalities to our own Hindu brothers and sisters who are suffering due to non sense caste systems..
