UN's Ban Ki Moon warns Europe against "dangerous" anti-Muslim trend
Strasbourg - United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon warned on Tuesday against a 'dangerous trend' of intolerance targeting Muslim immigrants in Europe, in a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
'A dangerous trend is emerging, a new politics of polarization. Some play on people's fears,' Ban said, adding, 'They accuse immigrants of violating European values.'
'Yet too often it is the accusers who subvert these values and thus the very idea of what it means to be a citizen of the European Union,' he continued.
'Europe's darkest chapters have been written in language such as this. Today the primary targets are immigrants of the Muslim faith,' he said. 'Europe cannot afford stereotyping that closes minds and breeds hatred, and the world cannot afford a Europe that does this.'
A fierce debate is raging in Germany over the integration of the country's estimated 4 million immigrants, who make up around 5 per cent of the population.
Chancellor Angela Merkel weighed in at the weekend when she said that the concept of multiculturalism had 'absolutely failed' in Germany.
Horst Seehofer, a senior conservative member of her government, had previously said Germany should not accept more migrants from 'alien cultures,' such as Turks and Arabs.
During a trip to Turkey, German President Christian Wulff reached out to immigrants of Turkish origin on Tuesday, but stressed that they had to integrate by learning the German language, laws and values.
'I demand that every immigrant integrates into our society actively and with good intention,' Wulff told the Turkish parliament.
Germany's populist concerns over perceived Muslim integration problems, follow similar debates in countries including the Netherlands, France and Switzerland.
In his European Parliament address, Ban called upon the EU to 'demonstrate leadership,' not just with regard to immigration but also in tackling extreme poverty, climate change challenges and promoting a world free of nuclear weapons.
