Riyadh: Hundreds of Pakistani construction workers are to fly home from Saudi Arabia this week but without the salaries they have waited months to receive, embassy officials told AFP.

A total of 405 Pakistanis owed wages by once-mighty Saudi Oger will fly home from Wednesday courtesy of the Saudi government, said Abdul Shakoor Shaikh, the Pakistani embassy's community welfare attache.

They are among more than 6,500 Pakistanis who, he said, have not been paid by the construction giant for that past eight or nine months.

Large contingents of Filipinos and Indians have also gone months without pay from Saudi Oger, which is led by Lebanon's billionaire former premier Saad Hariri.

In all, more than 30,000 Saudi Oger workers are affected.

Employees of Oger and other construction companies, which are dependent on state contracts, have suffered because of delayed receipts from a Saudi government whose oil revenues have collapsed over the past two years.

Shaikh said 275 Pakistanis have already flown home under an aid plan announced last month by King Salman.

The 100-million-riyal ($27-million) fund helps stranded workers with food, medical needs, a trip home, exit visas or, if they want, transfer to another employer in Saudi Arabia.

Shaikh said the Saudi labour ministry "has facilitated a lot" in caring for the workers and has also helped to file court claims against Saudi Oger.

The embassy is authorised to receive the back wages for most of the workers and, when it arrives, will forward the money to those who return home, officials at the mission said.

"But the problem persists. We cannot say that Saudi Oger has started paying the salaries," Shaikh said.

Exit visas for more than 2,000 of the Pakistanis have been completed, and the rest must decide whether to also go home.

A relatively small number, more than 70, have transferred to other companies in Saudi Arabia but Shaikh said other sectors do not pay as much as construction.

Shaikh was confident the workers would eventually receive their delayed wages. "The judicial system is good compared to other countries," he said.

In May, Saudi Binladin Group, another construction titan, began paying delayed wages to its remaining staff after laying off tens of thousands of employees.

This is a big slap in the face to the Pakistani by Saudis...very shameful. Pakistani people are proud

.
They should have left when the owner of company didnt pay them for couple of months. Saudis are going broke so we should brace for another financial crisis. I just hope CPEC gets operational soon so at least we can absorb these people into job market.

Pakistan, India and Philippine should jointly sue this billionaire farmer either through govt of KSA or in the ICJ. How come this billionaire exploit the workers and he still remains a billionaire. If his company had run into financial problem, why did he not announce his bankruptcy, paid their salaries and ended the company?

.
well he probably planned this and ripped them off. it time to turn the tide against them use this workers o shout ant saudi slogans watch saudis get scared. maybe a lil support to yemen may change thier mind plus iran b happier.

Situation is getting very very hard in middle East specifically KSA today Saudi govt has lesser 20% salaries for all govt employes due to falling petroleum prices

KSA should never joined USA monopoly and sold it's petroleum and they can't reduce the flow of petroleum too

KSA Iran and Muslim umah should bind otherwise we all parish

These Lebanese political tycoons are big theives...Saad Hariri racked up billions in payments for project which he did not execute well or infact only executed them on paper and laundered the money to offshore accounts...

Actually due to petroleum hike Saudi was under high inflation and Saudi riyal devalued...now it is valuating once again inflation will reduce and same amount of money will buy more...

This is completely matter between workers and the company. I don't think Saudi govt is involve in anyway.

Actually they are involved and govt has assured no workers will be deported without all dues being cleared..so they must authorize their embassy to collect the dues and remit it over....Saudi oger projects were not sustainable from day one and it was well know that they use their social influence to invent useless and very expensive projects..

The situation is indeed worse and can go worse (which i hope it does not) ....

but very important to understand is;

IT is NOT a Pakistan - Specific or Pakistani Targeted action ... Saudi Oger, Saudi Bin Laden, Saad Consruction company etc etc. have serious cash flow issues (Saudi Oger is almost broke & bankrupt) & hence unable to pay salary to anyone & ALL nationalities (Reason are purely Economical, Financial, and Mismanagement) ...
(Also the old Project are completing and closing & new Projects are not getting started due to cash crunch !

It is easier said than done that TWO month or so u do not get salary .. Pack ur bags & leave for home ... These workers many of them work for years in the company without problems and were of the opinion that the issue is temporary and will sort out soon & thn get kinda stuck in the spiral, plus it is not that they have a ready made job avlaible back in Pakistan (or india, BD, Philippines etc.) ... They thought they have better chance at staying and weathering the storm here thn go back & try to find a job thr.

It is also not a revenge from Pakistanis by Saudia for not participating in the Yemen War .... It is happening totally due to economic reasons... STOP the Conspiracy theories !!!!

Situation is not great but MILLIONS of people are STILL working in Suadi Arabia & GCC they are the ones sending Billions of Dollars to Pakistan every month (last year an Staggering 20 Billion $ was sent in remittances - in order to understand the magnitude of this amount compare it with Kerry Lugar Bill or Monthly export of Pakistan) ... THIS is the amount help Pakistan keep its balance of payment somehow balance & not many of them have a ready made job available back in Pakistan ...

These are the reasons result in not OTT response from the Pakistan Govt (& Embassy) .. but yes what they should be able to do is to address the greivance of these 1 % of Expats and arrange for thr basic necessities while they are here waiting for the disbursement of thr Payment ... Govt. of Pakistan NOT Saudi Govt. owe it to these expats ... and they have miserably failed at this ....

Given any other dimension to this whole issue is just BONKERS !

PS: Above mentioned scenario is Simplified

This is not good for Pakistan.

We already have a bad economy and this will be another blow to us.

Liabilities of a corporation cannot be imposed on the owners

.
If it's a Saudi company. Claimants must file their cases in Saudi courts. One cannot sue the country for the crime. Since this company seemed to have cheated more than Pakistanis, may be Pakistan can join other countries to press their case. You have to make noise. Meekness will get you nowhere.
