Under construction Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge in Bihar’s Bhagalpur collapses

There is a silver lining. The collapse happened before it opened to traffic.

Isn't this the second time this bridge has collapsed? It's been under construction for 7 years and still not finished? Why is it taking so long?

Part of under-construction bridge on Ganga in Bihar caves in, probe ordered

The four-lane bridge, located about 35 km west from Bhagalpur, is being built by SP Singla Constructions Limited for the Bihar Pul Nirman Nigam Limited (BRPNNL) at a cost of ₹1710.77 crore.

A portion of the superstructure of under-construction mega bridge on the river Ganga in Bihar, linking Khagaria with Bhagalpur, caved in near Sultanganj Friday night allegedly under the impact of storm and rains that lashed the area, officials said.

The four-lane bridge, located about 35 km west from Bhagalpur, is being built by SP Singla Constructions Limited for the Bihar Pul Nirman Nigam Limited (BRPNNL) at a cost of ₹1710.77 crore.

Reports said that 18 box girders on each side of the pillar number five from Sultanganj side, which were connected with steel ropes, slid down. As the incident took place in night, work was not in progress and hence no casualty has been reported so far.

BRPNNL managing director Sanjay Kumar said a team of experts would inspect the site for taking necessary action.

Engineers of Bihar government’s road construction department (RCD) said it was not a minor accident. “Caving in of the slabs of an under-construction bridge is a major technical lapse. The casualty of life and damage to property would have been great had the accident taken place in areas of human activities,” said a superintending engineer.

Sultanganj MLA Lalit Narayan Mandal said chief minister Nitish Kumar has ordered an inquiry into the incident. “The possibility of use of substandard materials in construction of the bridge cannot be ruled out. It’s a matter of worry if the bridge could not sustain gusty winds,” he said.

The construction of the 30-span bridge between Sultanganj (in Bhagalpur) and Aguani Ghat (in Khagaria) started in 2014 and was due to complete in 2019. However, the work could not complete owing to procedural delays in land acquisition and prevalence of Covid-19 pandemic, officials said.

The 3.11-km-long bridge is being made with extradosed spans and a high level observatory to offer the passers-by a panoramic view of the river. An extradosed bridge is a hybrid structure between the classic cable-stayed and cantilever-girder types.

It's Bihar, hopefully they will elect a responsible government (preferably BJP) the next time around and at last participate in India's path to progress.

So bigoted comments, Isn't this good on the part of the Nitish/ Tejeswi Yadav govt, has this happened post-inauguration of the bridge and many people died? Now they will pursue the dreams of making a solid bridge in their lifetime using Tax payer money.

The major reason is Nitish Kumar himself. He has forced the construction to be speeded, even letting go safety procedures to save time for express highway because he wanted it to be completed in shortest time possible.
I wouldn't be surprised, same thing happening at this bridge as well.

Bihar, it is very common over there i.e. Bridge collapsing, its their national sport.

Nitish Kumar got paid off I'm sure. A healthy chunk of the Rs.1750 crore paid for this bridge. Twice.

Then he orders a "probe" on why this collapsed.

I have no words.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A suspension bridge being built in India's poorest state collapsed for the second time in 14 months, with one person reported missing, Reuters partner ANI reported on Monday.

The bridge was being built over the River Ganges in Bhagalpur district of India's eastern state of Bihar.

Construction was scheduled to be completed in 2019 but faced multiple delays, including those caused by an earlier collapse on April 30 last year due to strong winds and rain.

"There was a massive stir over here, it felt like there was a blast. Later we found out the bridge had collapsed," Rakesh Kumar, a local resident, told ANI.

Eight men were on the bridge at the time of its collapse on Sunday, with one guard reported missing, ANI said.

ANI footage showed a section of the bridge partially submerged in water, with only some pillars and cables connected jutting out to indicate where that portion of the structure once stood.

"We have conducted an investigation and I have reported the findings to the head of the district administration," Deputy Head of District Administration Amit Raj told ANI.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, speaking to reporters on Monday, also promised "strict action".

"It is not being constructed correctly that is why it is collapsing. It should have been made more strong," he said.

In October last year, a colonial-era suspension bridge collapsed in the town of Morbi in the western state of Gujarat collapsed, plunging hundreds into the Machchhu river below and killing 135.

It had reopened just days earlier following months of repairs.

Some Rupees 1700 crore plus gone down into the river, for the second time now - I guess.

Wow. :disagree:

Well, that's what happens when 90% of their so called "engineers" are "unemployable", and the rest 10% are staning in the queues to get H1B.

Huge suspension bridge collapses for a SECOND time in a year in eastern India
