Unable to build aircraft, Delhi splurges on planes it can ill afford​

Bharat’s attempt at indigenous production of weapons has been a colossal failure the likes of which do not exist in the annals of military history. Bharat’s failed LCA is the stuff made for jokes around military headquarters from Brussells to Moscow to Beijing to Washington. Bharat has been trying to produce a plane called the LCA. After a decade of design, Delhi has failed to produce a prototype of the plane. The project is years away from a flight test. They are still bickering about which foreign engine to use. Delhi’s attempt to build missiles is a humongous tragedy of errors frustrating the defense establishment at the highest levels. Indian missle failures. Program Scrapped!

China again rebuffs Delhi and refuses to sell or even show her aviation prowess to Bharat (aka India). Bharat is the only country of its size that is unable to produce aircraft, missiles or choppers. It has had to purchase most of its arms from Russia which is ever more reluctant to share technology with Delhi. India getting stripped down version of Russian FGA. Design has already been frozen.

NEW DELHI: The world may have been hit by economic recession but India will continue to shop for arms and weapons systems. A top ranking Defence Ministry official on Monday claimed that there were enough funds for modernisation of the Armed Forces and the new acquisitions would continue despite the economic slowdown.

The message would cheer up at least the global military aviation industry which will show up in full strength in Bangalore for the latest edition of Aero India 2009 beginning next week.

Secretary (Defence Production) Pradeep Kumar, who is the chief organiser of the air show, claimed that the country’s military programme will continue as before dispelling any doubts despite economic turmoil.

Perhaps, this is the reason why the world’s aviation companies have turned up in large numbers at Bangalore making Aero India one of the biggest air shows in this part of the world. This is the 7th show and by far the biggest.

All the dominant aviation players will be there as usual but some new grounds have been broken. For the first time China, which has stayed away from previous air shows, has decided to send a 10-member delegation.

In military aviation, China is reluctant to open up with India as it has a strategic alliance with Pakistan. It is a different matter that both India and China’s military aviation is based on the Russian platform.

One of the obvious attentions during Aero India, starting on February 11, would be on fighter jets.

The process of acquisition of 126 multi-role combat fighters for the Indian Air Force has reached a decisive stage.

Those in the fray are going to display their combat jets at the air show.

For the first time, India will have a close look at Eurofighter Typhoon.

The US will be there with F-16s and F-18s and Russian MiG-35 will also arrive for a static and flying display along with indigenous Light Combat Aircraft.

A total of 592 companies have registered for the show out of which 303 are foreign. The maximum number of companies will be from Germany and France (31 each) followed by the UK, Russia, the US, Italy, Belgium, Israel and Australia.

The US with 22 companies will occupy the largest space at the show.

There will be a lot of flying activities over Bangalore’s air space during the show and organisers were satisfied that there have been no cancellations despite 26/11.

At present the Bharati defense establishment idea of arms production is a lot of tri-color paint. Perhaps the recipients of Bofers already know–and want to cash in on more kickbacks.

The “New East India Company” under the guise of Lockheed Martin etc. is ready able and willing to take away Bharati Dollars to make ever more profits for its shareholders.

Bharat has not dealt with the Shylocks of the Military Industrial Complex. Soon they will learn about planned obsolescence how the sealed boxes will cost them an arm and a leg.

The IAF is also worried about the slow pace and quality of work at HAL. More so, because it will not be able to deliver by 2013, as scheduled, the 20 aircraft for which orders have been placed. Defence Minister A.K. Antony recently said the Tejas would enter squadron service by 2011, which date, according to officials, is highly optimistic as hardly 10 or 12 test sorties are now being undertaken. The IAF expects the final operational clearance for the Tejas only after 2012.

BANGALORE: In a milestone, a Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas took off from here and for the first time dropped live stores (bombs) at a firing range.

The dropping of two 25-pounder bombs, with one striking the target and the other falling within the inner 25 yard circle, was undertaken by Prototype Vehicle-3 of the LCA programme.

The successful dropping of the light, marker bombs will enable the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) – designers of the fly-by-wire LCA – to not only prove the working of the aircraft’s flight control software for weapon drops and aiming, but also take forward the LCA’s weaponisation programme.

ADA officials said the flight control system software had to recognise and adjust for the dropping and still maintain the highly unstable flying platform’s handling qualities.

The software had to take into effect the added stores, asymmetric drops, increased sensitivity of the aircraft’s controls and still make sure that the movement of the aircraft’s centre of gravity was still well within limits.

Following this success, the ADA is planning to do as many similar sorties dropping both 25-pounder and 3-kg bombs over the next three days, analyse the results and then prepare for the next stage of the weaponisation programme.

The next stage of weapon trials will see the ADA and the Air Force taking the Tejas to Jamnagar in Gujarat, hopefully by the end of the month. Jamnagar has been chosen as its cross runways will allow the undertaking of both weapon and cross wind trials.

Same old/pathetic Mentality of Indians that "Every Chinese Product is cheap and made up of Plastic" and "JF-17 or whatever Pakistan claims is Indigenously Prepared in Pakistan is just Imported from Other Countries"

I have written this statement on many times now but Indians just wont Understand and actually as a matter of Fact that "they don't want to understand" they want to live in their on Wonderland.

JF-17 is far ahead than your LCA and you just keep on dreaming that JF-17 is just a Chinese Toy and Made in China where as JF-17 thunder will keep on being produced in Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC).

I was talking nothing about JF-17. If it is in mass production , then its good for you. If it is a technical marvel, kudos to you. If it is not then its really not appreciated. While I would like the LCA to fail if india will say something about the LCA what it is not.

Now the stage is that we can speed up the delay and learn something from other countries and not make the mistake again in our next development.

LCA is not just about india-pakistan cat and mouse game. Its about learning and gaining experience as well to develop the indian aircraft industry, from the critical technologies learnt during the process.
So please keep the JF-17 away from LCA for a while.
