UN assures India of taking up issue of Lakhvi's release in next meeting

UNITED NATIONS: A UNSC committee has assured India that it will take up the issue of Mumbai terror attack mastermind Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi at its next meeting, after India expressed concern that the LeT commander's release from a Pakistani jail violates the provisions of the global body.

India's ambassador to the UN Asoke Mukerji had written a letter to the chair of the UNSC al-Qaida sanctions committee ambassador Jim McLay expressing concern over Lakhvi's release and said it violates the provisions of the committee concerning al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities.

India also pointed out that as a listed terrorist, Lakhvi can neither receive or give money since all his assets and financial resources have to be frozen. Any bail money posted for Lakhvi is also a violation of the provisions of the sanctions committee since he is listed terrorist.

Acknowledging India's concerns, McLay has responded to India's letter and assured that the matter will be discussed at the next meeting of the committee, sources told PTI.

The next meeting of the committee is expected to take place in the next few days.

The committee had listed in December 2008 Lakhvi as a terrorist associated with LeT and al-Qaida for "participating in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing or perpetrating of acts of activities by, in conjunction with, under the name of, on behalf or in support of" both entities.

As a listed terrorist, Lakhvi is subject to assets freeze, travel ban and an arms embargo.

The committee said that as chief of operations and military commander of LeT, Lakhvi has directed its operations, including in Iraq and South-East Asia.

"In past years, Lakhvi has played an important role in LeT fundraising activities, receiving donations from al-Qaida affiliates on behalf of LeT. He has also managed a training camp in Afghanistan," according to the committee website.

The release of Lakhvi had also raised concerns in the US, UK, Russia, France and Germany with Washington calling for him to be rearrested.

Lakhvi and six others - Abdul Wajid, Mazhar Iqbal, Hamad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jameel Riaz, Jamil Ahmed and Younis Anjum - have been charged with planning and executing the Mumbai attack in November, 2008 that left 166 people dead.

Lakhvi, 55, a close relative of LeT founder and Jamaat-Ud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed, was arrested in December 2008 and was indicted along with the six others on November 25, 2009 in connection with the 26/11 attack case.

The trial has been underway since 2009. A Pakistani court had on April 9 set free Lakhvi, a move which India said "eroded" the value of assurances repeatedly conveyed to it by Pakistan on cross-border terrorism.

Harboring LeT terrorists should not be allowed, first Hafiz said and now Lakhwi.

Any basis for your rant, Mr. TT? I mean, do you even bother to look up for sources when you make serious allegations like this?

The same country which has spent 6 decades refusing to cooperate with the UN on the Kashmir Issue has now arrived at the UN's doorstep, whining about the fact that Lakhvi was released. Wasn't Modi also released by Indian courts?

bullshit influence, all UN did is patting on indias back to prevent it from noise making.

Do you realize that the guy you are supporting, Mr. Lakhvi is a terrorist belonging to the UN designated terror group, which killed close to 200 innocent civilians in one single attack in Mumbai alone?

First, your government vetoes the UN Resolution condemning the terror group and then CCP foot soldiers like you take pride in how helpless Indian government is in UN?

If you can't add anything meaningful to the discussion, have some self-restraint not to celebrate the misfortune of other terror victims! You yourself are a victim of terror!

US condemns Lakhvis release but then sells $1 billion worth of military equipment and the best chopper in the world, AH-1Z to Pakistan.

Bezti for Indians. What is UN going to do? :o:\\

Indians have no respect in the world arena. India doesn't have respect for itself, why would anyone give it any respect. So much happened and all India did was a bunch of boohoo fuss fuss.

.
For Kashmir third parties are not accepted but these terrorist killed hundreds of people in Mumbai

Well this guy also killed hundreds in Gujrat. But you give him bail again and again and again. You don't seem to worry about his bail. A hypocrisy which we Pakistanis understand very well.

Oh well. Go whine in the UN. :)

This thread will be shutdown like any thread regarding Kashmir or Gujarat were shut down by Indians.
He was acquitted by the court.
If this needs to be discussed, it will be discussed bilaterally.
Now go cry somewhere else.

how do you come up with 'support terrorist and celebrate the misfotune"? i dislike you braggers who always intend to degrade others to highlight india.

Never charged, never arrested. So no question of "releasing" Modi. Only thing ever discussed was if there any evidence to link him to the riots. Courts found that there wasn't.

He was acquitted by the court.

Nope. There was no trial. "Acquitted" implies that there was a trial and evidence presented.

Well then I'll amend what I previously said.
Anyway, the courts also declared that Lakhvi was not involved.

They said no such thing. They gave him bail because he was sitting in jail and the prosecution wouldn't move forward with its case. Thus the question about how a UN declared terrorist who cannot receive money and who's assets are supposed to be frozen made bail and rode off into the sunset. If his case had gone to trial and he'd acquitted, there isn't much anyone could have except grumble about the state of Pakistan's legal system. However, Pakistan is on the hook because they have an obligation to make sure that he doesn't receive money and his assets are frozen.
