Ukrainian EW Radar Helped Israel Destroy Iranian Pantsir Air Defence In Syria

A Ukrainian-made Kolchuga-M passive radar system helped Israel locate and destroy Russian Pantsir air defence system deployed by Iran in Syria.

The targeted defensive systems included Tor surface-to-air missile system, a Pantsir-S surface-to-air missile systems, an S-75 surface-to-air missile system, and a JY-28 radar, Uawire reported.

The Kolchuga's passive electronic support measure makes it possible to spot ground and surface targets and trace their movement within a radius of 600 km and air targets at the 10 km altitude – up to 800 km, which makes an effective early warning air defense system.

According to the GlobalSecurity.org, the Ukrainian Kolchuga has a detection range of 800km. US’ Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) detection range is 600 km, while the ground-based complexes Vera (Czech Republic) and Vega (Russia) can reach up to 400km. The Kolchuga’s lower limit of the working frequency range is 130MHZ. For the AWACS it is 2,000 MHz, for the Vera it is 850MHz, for the Vega it is 200MHz.

That's really long range for something mounted on a 6 wheeled truck... Or do the trucks work as one system?

It really depends on...where you put it. This is essentially an ESM sensor, not a radar per se. You can think of this system like an assortment of very large ears, mounted on trucks.

You put a handful of those trucks in mountains, preferably many kilometers apart, and then you triangulate or multialterate the emissions they "hear".

To really make this work, you need direct line of sight between the emitter (your target) and at least some of the receivers (which is a reason for putting them high up). There is no other requirement though. If the emitter is strong enough, and if a couple of the trucks can "hear/see" it in a straight line, then you get enough data to learn its location. Thus, a system like this is pretty valuable as an early warning asset, especially against aircraft.

Now...to use this against a SAM location is a little trickier. The system probably got the big Chinese radar first, and triangulated its position. Then, the approximate coords were sent to IAF, which proceeded with a DEAD air mission. Probably with something like this. (good luck countering it)

At least, that is my speculation, given the info in the article above.

Now that you mention it, I checked the news report & the Pantsir was killed around Damascus, which is within 100km of Israeli border so yea, now it seems plausible to have used this system with success.

But 600 km or even 800 km, how're you going to detect & triangulate signals over such a large area? For all you know, the Pantsir might have moved 10-50 km by the time they send in the aircrafts for the bombing.

I just thought they were stretching the range of the ESM system but yea, prove me wrong & I'll be happy.

Have in mind that the article simply lists the max range of the system. This seems fairly credible, since it is essentially regurgitating verbatim the globalsecurity.org database entry for the system. Moreover, we do know that the Israelis procured some of those trucks this winter.

The article is not insinuating that the system captured the SAM site from 600-800km away. That is impossible anyway, due to the Earths' curvature. 600-800km ranges are attainable against high flying air targets, not radar emitters on the ground.

LOL Are you all serious discussing some BS story sourced from some trash fake news Ukrainian site? You cant use ground system to detect another ground system located hundreds of km away. You use air based systems for that.
