British Saxon armored cars to be delivered to Ukrainian army after conversion and testing : UNIAN news
13.02.2015

A consignment of 20 British Saxon armored cars has been delivered to Ukraine, with another 55 of the vehicles expected to arrive in the country in the near future, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov has said.

Turchynov, speaking during a visit on Friday to a training center of the Ukrainian National Guard, said that in the near future the armored vehicles will undergo conversion work at the enterprise of state concern Ukroboronprom to adapt them to the needs of the Ukrainian army.

"These Saxons were obtained without weapons - they will be equipped with a weapons station made in Ukraine, which should provide effective fire cover for the National Guard or the other units that the vehicles will be delivered to," Turchynov said.

After testing, the armored vehicles will "immediately enter service with our military," he said.

As reported earlier, on December 5, 2014, First Deputy General Director of state-owned enterprise Ukroboronprom Sergiy Pinkas said that the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine had purchased 75 light armored vehicles from British manufacturer Saxon for about $3.8 million.

He also added that the Saxon armored cars are an affordable alternative to the outdated technology currently in service of the Ukrainian army, stressing that these machines are being upgraded and would be ready to provide the necessary protection for the Ukrainian military when carrying out missions in the combat zone.

Saxon armored vehicles were developed in the early 1970s to act as a cheap but efficient "battle-taxi" for security forces on missions. Saxons are currently used by several countries, including Oman, Bahrain, Malaysia and Nigeria.

American equipment saves fighters near Debaltseve - ATO Staff| Ukrinform
KYIV, February 23 /Ukrinform/. Supplies of lethal and non-lethal weapons from the United States may become an issue of survival of the Ukrainian state.

This has been announced on Monday by deputy head of the ATO staff in Donetsk and Luhansk regions Colonel Valentyn Fedychev in Ukrainian crisis media center, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"If we see that the fighting in eastern Ukraine do not stop, if we see an escalation of these actions, then the scope of U.S. military support to Ukraine, including the supply of lethal and non-lethal weapons, will become a matter of survival of our state," Fedychev said.

He noted that during the operation in Debaltseve the Ukrainian military used American equipment capable of determining the coordinates of mortar batteries. "Using this technique has saved a great number of lives of our soldiers," Fedychev said.

Specialists of UKROBORONPROM plant “Mayak” developed special combat modules for imported armored vehicles “Saxon” and “HMMWV” (military “Hammer”). Equipped armored vehicles were represented to the President of Ukraine, Minister of Defence and representatives of other state law enforcement agencies on April 4.

Armored Car “Saxon” was equipped with two machine guns 7.62 mm turrets and 12.7 mm machine gun DShKM, Hummer was equipped with12.7 mm machine gun DShKM. Machine guns, mentioned above, are intended for destruction of manpower and fire weapons, have manual control of fire using the trigger.

Machine gun, mounted on the roof of "Saxon," will have vertical angle of fire from -10 to + 45 °, horizontal - 180 ° due to special installation. Combat rate of the given machine guns is 250 rounds per minute. Effective range of DShKM is 1300-2000 m, effective fire from a machine gun - at the distance of up to 1000 m and the maximum range of a bullet - 3800 m.

“We initiated development of hardware for these vehicles at Mayak plant and offered several options. Today they are installed and presented to state leadership”, - said UKROBORONPROM First Deputy Director General Sergii Pinkas.

For today, the first batch of "Saxons," 20 cars, are delivered to Ukraine. The manufacturing plant modernized the given vehicles and provided a guarantee on all components and assemblies. Besides, UKROBORONPROM enterprises will provide technical support of armored vehicles.

Last month, the enterprise restored the batch of armored carriers BTR-70 for National Guard of Ukraine. Plant capacity allows to repair up to 70-80 units of equipment a year.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence confirmed that Ukraine had taken delivery of former British military armoured vehicles in a commercial arms deal.
Reports in Ukraine said 20 Saxon armoured personnel carriers had been delivered and a further 55 were to follow but the MoD did not confirm the figures.
An MoD spokeswoman said the unarmed vehicles were transferred by a private company under a 2013 deal that pre-dated the current conflict.
The Saxon vehicles – described as troop transporters not considered suitable for close combat – were first used by the MoD in the 1980s but went out of service three years ago, the spokesman said.

Spot report by OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM): Renewed intensive fighting around Donetsk city and Shyrokyne, 12 April 2015 | OSCE
At 9.35hrs on 12 April, upon arrival at Donetsk railway station (“Donetsk People’s Republic” (“DPR”)-controlled, 8km north-west of Donetsk city centre), the SMM witnessed heavy fighting between “DPR” and the Ukrainian Armed Forces in areas near the city visible from its position. Both the Ukrainian Armed Forces representative and the Russian Federation representative to the Joint Centre for Control and Co-ordination (JCCC) told the SMM that the Ukrainian side (assessed to be the Right Sector volunteer battalion) earlier had made an offensive push through the line of contact towards Zhabunki (“DPR”-controlled, 14km west-north-west of Donetsk), but the SMM was not able to verify this.

The SMM observed that an intensive armed clash was underway with the use of tanks, heavy artillery, automatic grenade launchers, mortars, heavy machine-guns, and small arms and light weapons (SALW). From its arrival at 9.35 to 15:00hrs, the SMM observed and recorded 1,166 explosions, caused mainly by artillery and mortar shell strikes. The SMM assessed that weapons with a calibre larger than 100mm were used by both sides during the fighting.

The SMM observed shelling and/or SALW fire outgoing from the following locations: Kyivskyi district (“DPR”-controlled, 7km west-north-west of Donetsk); Kuibyshevskyi district (“DPR”-controlled, 7km west-north-west of Donetsk); a forested area one kilometre south-east of Spartak (“DPR”-controlled, 10km north-west of Donetsk); the area of “Ventstvol” mine (government-controlled, 12km north-west of Donetsk); and Butorskaya mine (“DPR”-controlled, 12.5km north-west of Donetsk).

The SMM observed that the following locations were subjected to incoming shelling: Opytne (government-controlled, 14km north-west of Donetsk); the radio tower at Donetsk airport (“DPR”-controlled, 11km north-west of Donetsk); Pisky (government-controlled, 11km north-west of Donetsk); Zhabunki; the Volvo Centre (“DPR”-controlled, 12km west-north-west of Donetsk); Kyievskyi district; and Spartak.

The SMM was in contact with the JCCC throughout the day and was informed that the JCCC attempted several times to mediate observation of the ceasefire, but was unsuccessful. Fighting was on-going at the time of the submission of this spot report from the field at 18:12hrs.

Also on 12 April, from an observation point located in the eastern outskirts of Berdianske (government-controlled, 19km east of Mariupol, 1.5km west of Shyrokyne) between 17:45 and 18:00hrs, the SMM heard 25 incoming mortar rounds it assessed were fired from “DPR” positions in the east, impacting one kilometre north of the SMM’s position, on Ukrainian Armed Forces positions in western Shyrokyne. Between 18:00 and 18:25hrs, the SMM heard another 24 incoming mortar rounds impacting two kilometres from its position, near the E58 road. From 18:05 to 18:25hrs, the SMM observed 30 mortar rounds fired from a Ukrainian Armed Forces position along the Sea of Azov coast in southern Berdianske, 400m south-east of the SMM’s position. Following a lull until 18:50hrs, “DPR” artillery from the north-north-east targeted these Ukrainian Armed Forces positions with salvos, probably 122mm howitzers. The SMM observed splashes in the Sea of Azov. The SMM departed at 19:00hrs but continued to hear artillery fire. The artillery fire was heard and shook buildings across Mariupol; it ended at 20:25hrs.

On 12 April, the SMM was repeatedly denied access to the village of Shyrokyne.

Russia criticizes Canada for sending troops to Ukraine

Canadian Defense Minister Jason Kenney said the deployment sends Russian President Vladimir Putin a message of resolution and deterrence. Kenney emphasized the troops will be far from the conflict zone. About 150 soldiers will be housed at a NATO training center in Yavoriv, near the Polish border. Kenney also said between 25 to 30 troops will be also stationed at the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense Demining Center in Kamyanets-Podilsky, also in western Ukraine.

Canada is home to more than 1 million people of Ukrainian descent.
