Kiev-based Arsenal Design Bureau has built and tested a new infrared (IR) seeker for the Russian-designed R-27ET (AA-10 'Alamo-D') beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile (AAM) that significantly improves the combat performance of the existing weapon.

Production hardware for the AZ-10 seeker was exhibited for the first time by Arsenal at the Ukrainian Defence Industrial Forum, Kiev, on 31 August. Arsenal has also renamed the baseline missile, which becomes the R-47T when fitted with the new seeker.

Capable of accurately acquiring targets out to 30 km, the AZ-10 is a much better match for the extended range of the 'long Alamo' variants. The larger rocket motor of the improved 'E-type' (Energovooruzhenosti, energetic weaponry) R-27 missiles gives them a maximum range of around 100 km. R-27E designers have previously told Jane's that their missile can fly significantly further than the newer R-77/RVV-AE (AA-12 'Adder'). The emergence of the AZ-10 shows that there is demand on the international market for passive-homing BVR AAMs that permit 'stealthy' extended-range engagements. Russian and Ukrainian designers have continued to develop passive IR- and RF-guided AAMs that have almost no Western equivalent.

Arsenal representatives would not say openly who the intended customers for the seeker are. Unofficially, it was noted that the AZ-10 has been developed as an upgrade for the R-27ET missiles already serving with China's People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). China has established a local production capability for the R-27, which was transferred from Ukraine, where all Soviet-era production of the missile took place.

The original R-27ET seeker was developed and manufactured in Russia by Geophysika. It was accepted into service around 1991. "This type of seeker - for medium-range missiles like the long-burn R-27 - was not a product that we were responsible for developing during Soviet times," an Arsenal representative told Jane's . "We were the producers of the shorter-range IR missile seekers, like the R-73 [AA-11 'Archer']."

Since then, Arsenal has moved into the BVR missile sector. The AZ-10 seeker was shown as a concept at the MAKS 2009 Moscow Air Show, where it was referred to as the MR-2000.

Arsenal has gone on build and test-launch production standard seekers. Efforts to put it into full production continue. The company stated: "This seeker is not yet in series production. At this point it has been developed for this customer, but there is not a firm order."

"We have no large numbers of this seeker on order from the Chinese. It would be nice if we did, but what they want to do is to have us design the unit and transfer to them the technical documentation so that they can build this seeker themselves. They are beginning to develop the cadre of specialists and skill sets that they need to become independent in this field of technology," said a source.

According to Arsenal, it is involved in the AZ-10/R-47T programme without the co-operation of the R-27's original manufacturer, Artem, also located in Kiev. "This does not make much sense to us. We are neighbours and have a history of co-operation, but they want to go off and do something on their own in this particular instance," an Arsenal official commented.

It is likely that the name change to R-47T is a reflection of Artem's absence from the programme; Arsenal on its own has no legal right to use the R-27 designation.

Artem probably views Arsenal's work as damaging to its export prospects. According to Arsenal, the AZ-10 seeker can be swapped for the Geophysika seeker head, so customers need not purchase a new AAM. "This seeker may also be retrofitted to older-model SAMs that use a previous generation IR seeker," added Arsenal.

sir could you please tell me ..where does do the eastern European countries like Ukraine , Moldova ,Belarus stand as far as arms production is concerned ? do they have pools of defense scientists with well Funded R & D's ? and how good are the qualities of their goods...in comparison to U.S .British or French standards....thank you in advance.....regards....

I find the sheer number and variety of Russian missile seekers and types to be fascinating. The U.S. will work for five years on the AIM-9X, for example. But when it is introduced to the forces, it will have gone through an enormous amount of testing, fixes, etc, and will probably perform very well. In the same time frame, Russia will whip out 4 variants. Either they have an absolute genius for this type of thing, or they do not go through the same sort of development process. I honestly don't know how good they are. The real-world data is so limited.

I think a high-performance air to air missile is one of the most technically challenging devices a military establishment can engineer.

Russia , China ,India like countries with relatively limited defense budgets happen to create very flexible missiles capable to deal with a variety of threats and compatible with a variety of platforms such as our own Brahmos .....having land based, ship based, air launched variants.....however since funds are not a concern with respect to the U.S....they produce highly specialized missiles with ranges , accuracies , guidance systems and active shields against interference far superior to anything Russians can produce....they literally ensure that every loophole is plugged.....regards.....

in the old soviet union, ukraine had many defence related R&D and factories established by the soviet union. they remain to thid day with their engineering capabilities / personnel intact.

Working on a weapons-package with Ukraine for export JF-17s would be a good idea, especially for countries with large inventories of Russian-Ukrainian origin missiles and bombs. If I recall correctly, Ukraine was interested in marketing its BAU-01K series of precision guided bomb kits with the JF-17s, maybe we should invite them to do the same with this R-27ET AAM.

Ukraine is very capable of developing or improve existing technologies on their own.
Where as India requires intensive foreigner help to develop any military equipment.

israel meets a substantial part of their defense needs through collaboration with the U.S......

Buddy i wrote that for military innovations. For example, Israel produces topsight system with 45 degree in it's own its UAV innovations and iron dome system are totally new. . And also their electronic warfare innovations. Even usa bought some of their UAV for their air force. But in what system India lead the innovations in defence sector. . With out private sector corrupted DRDO cant make anything:hitwall:

firstly I agree that Israel innovates a lot of military products ......drones are(Harop , Heron etc) certainly one of the areas where they are advanced and they manage to gather orders worth billions from the U.S.....now as concerns the Iron Dome system .....

as regards their electronic warfare innovations ....Elta has certainly been chosen as a radar provider for the LCA......however our RWR called tarang ( radar warning receiver developed by DRDO....still applies on our most advanced fighter the MKI....and our EW suite called Mayavi(in Tejas) was considered according to a news report on Israeli jets....


the problem is not with the DRDO's capabilities but in the interim bureaucratic hassles dealing with testing and subsequent induction .....
and the preference of the armed forces for a tested foreign product over a domestic one also plays a role....

Ps. I was using India as an example.....with less resources , no western collaboration and a refusal to reverse engineer licensed goods .....its hardly surprising that India lags in innovation.....with more money for domestic R & D this will change in time.......

ever heard of Dhruv and LCA? they are foreigner products.

please check the number of domestic components in LCA before making such wild claims.....a vast majority of the Dhruv components may be western sourced but you might check out its derivative project the LCH.....

This is the best time to increase ties with Ukraine. Generally speaking, Ukrainians have nothing against Pakistanis.
