The Ukraine war has made things complex for Bangladesh with the Moscow-Washington rivalry posing as a test for Dhaka’s nonaligned foreign policy. The country needs to maintain its relations with both the US and Russia, which will be difficult as the war rages on, notes a report in the European Foundation for South Asian Studies (EFSAS).

The testing moment comes as the country prepares for two major elections.

The Bangladesh Election Commission, this past week, announced that the election for the next president of Bangladesh will be held on 19 February and a more significant event in the form of the (12th) general elections is marked to be held early next year.

Amidst all this, large protest rallies have been organised in Bangladesh by the political opposition, mainly the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

According to EFSAS, the external pressures that Bangladesh has come under since Russia invaded Ukraine last year reached such proportions that an enraged foreign minister Abul Kalam Abdul Momen felt it necessary to caution that his country did not want any foreign interference in Dhaka’s internal affairs.

Bangladesh has in the last few years, also had to carefully balance its relationship with the US and China as there has been escalating competition between the two. Dhaka views both as important for Bangladesh’s long-term interests and would like cordiality and cooperation with each.

A Bangladeshi media recently reported that Bangladesh is caught up between China and the US as both want a strategic alliance with the country as they wrangle over superpower status in the region.

The US is worried that its recent tensions with Bangladesh could turn into an opportunity for China to come closer to it.

Recently, Bangladesh foreign minister A K Abdul Momen, said that: “Bangladesh wants to maintain good relations with both the US and China. That is a challenging thing.”

Bangladesh’s relationship with Washington has been troubled since December 2021, after the US declared sanctions on Bangladesh’s elite security force, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), over alleged human rights violations such as enforced disappearances.

Relations further soured after the US in 2022, called on Bangladesh to ensure that the upcoming elections be free and fair. Momen said that his country did not need lessons on democracy from other nations.

Dhaka, however, also has tensions with Beijing.

In May 2021, the then ambassador of China to Bangladesh said that the relationship between the two countries could be “substantially damaged” if the South Asian country joined any initiative launched by the Washington-led Quad alliance.

Bangladesh in reply said that it is a sovereign state and would make its own decisions about the nation’s foreign policy.

Next elections in 2024 will be rigged anyway and so it is just BD government going through the motions.

BD public cannot yet be trusted to vote sensibly.

Like I said, bd needs to have an inspired from f governance from Singaporean and Chinese model.

The Chinese parliament actually has an civilian body that's represents the ppl and is voted in by the ppl.

Our technical burecates and other behind shadows have some what remained Humble. Some where along have beared a thought and planning for our ppl. These technical burecats need to have just touch more control.

Like wise bdesh could have gone the sense arrogance and ego form of governance Like Pakistan.... it also largely thanks to the different mentality our ppl have.

Western style democracy only works for those that are on top on the food chain , and have global media and social at their whim. Also control the flow of everything from coffee/grains/machines/materials to magic.... even if it has not been origined from their country or they have no f-ing relation to the country in relation. Like Russia delivering the nuclear machinery for bdesh plant. Also some how through all the atrocities they always appear to be the saviours and knights

The people in BD are so uneducated and uninformed that they may even vote down what may be one of the best government in the world right now, at least for economic policy, as some charlatan and chancer will promise them even more and they will believe it!

I am confident that the quasi-dictatorship in BD will continue at least till the end of this decade and probably a fair bit longer after that. After that we can move to a form of democracy more suited to BD and not just copy the West.

In some cases a good standard level education for the populace doesn't mean sh*t... I can point various disaster cases from Western gov's. It all depends how easily ppl can be brain washed... even educated can be brain washed.

Corbyn not getting into power,

Lizzy truss.

Boris.

Trump making abortion illegal even if by incest.

Trump f-jng world economy.

America and u.k lying and it allies., bombing and killing unrelated countries and killing millions of innocent civilian and war crime. By making thier countries trip on emotional level octane.

True that but the more poorer and uneducated the population is then the more the risk of them picking the wrong party.

As for Iraq War in 2003, a lot of the UK public were against it and if I remember correctly something like 2 million demonstrated in London.

Alot, yeh but not enough, how ever the vast majority of ppl did support the war, as they were brain washed of emotional grade octane.

We need to formulate a system of governance, that protects minorities. Modeled On Singaporean and Chinese model also a section that has public group representing the public. Also with in this system incorporate some of the ethos and Islamic principles in our governance but still remain secular.

We need to step away from this trickle down economics, which bdesh has been doing and inshallal will continue to do so.

As it the productive workers whether self employed or employed that create the wealth for the country
