Ukraine and Saudi Arabia are entering a new stage in a project to jointly produce the An-132 transportation plane, which is capable of transporting 9.2 tons of cargo. The plane is the invention of the state-owned Antonov (Kyiv) concern in Kyiv. Under the project, serial production of the aircraft is planned.

The press office of Ukroboronprom on Tuesday said an agreement between Antonov and the Saudi Taqnia Aeronautics had been signed after talks at the Dubai Airshow-2017, which was held from November 12 to November 16 in Dubai (UAE).

Ukroboronprom said during the exhibit the sides agreed on the creation of a cooperative effort to jointly product the An-132, as well as to create the Antonov Academy for training technicians, engineers and workers involved in the serial production project based in Saudi Arabia.

Antonov is Ukraine's leading developer and producer of aviation equipment and a recognized world leader in transportation aircraft. Since 2015 it has been part of the state-run Ukroboronprom concern.

* This is a very important step..

* The maximum range of the "Serial Production Aircraft" with full load of 9.2 tons will be raised to 2100 km instead of 1270 km in the test aircraft "AN-132 Demonstrator"

* According to Mr. Oleksandr Khokhlov, director of the AN-132 aircraft program at Antonov, the basic plane price will range from 30 to 40 million dollars
He also said that an unspecified “launch customer from Saudi Arabia” is expressing interest in special duty versions of the aircraft, including search & rescue and maritime patrol.

* The plane was requested by countries such as Turkey, the Republic of Egypt, South American countries, and some countries from East Asia.

A significant and warmly welcome development.

Another development, also with Ukrainian cooperation.

These sub-gradations confuse me. What difference does it make to include 2 medium machine guns and sonar and call it a light frigate? What role does a corvette play? Considering that these were originally cheap convoy escorts, why would corvettes not carry sonar by default?

Actually, what role does a corvette play, a corvette such as the one specified above? It sounds like the top of the line Coast Guard sloop.

My question is intended for an answer on the role of such a vessel, and is not intended to criticise the article or the possibility of Saudi Arabia using corvettes.

That's their intended purposes as per the rumors. That and ongoing technology transfer that is shared between KSA and Ukraine ever since those two started working together on numerous defense related projects.

As for the Saudi Arabian Navy, the modernization process will be a completely different beast altogether whether it goes for the navy branch based in the Gulf or the one in the Red Sea. Ukraine can't help here.

I understand your response as saying that this type will be the force of last resort before full-scale military activity is invoked. That seems reasonable; such a vessel cannot be used for offensive purposes (can, but unlikely), but can very effectively defend a country's littoral areas.

Think ToT and production localization first.. the corvette itself can be improved a lot with Western technologies..

I see. Get the basic platform into quality-controlled serial production, and keep adding to it.

Makes sense.
