The State Enterprise Malyshev Plant in Ukraine is marketing its latest 1,500 hp diesel powerpack as a potential upgrade for existing main battle tanks (MBTs) or installation in newly built MBTs.

The Malyshev Plant has manufactured more than 20,000 MBT engines and its latest development is a compact diesel powerpack that comprises the liquid-cooled 6TD-series six-cylinder, two-stroke multifuel supercharged engine.

The engine features direct fuel injection, a lubrication system, a powerpack top deck with ejection-type cooling system, an uprated transmission, and a hydraulic control and transmission lubrication system. Hull component parts include the air cleaner, air inlet device, and gas duct.

According to the Malyshev Plant, its ejection-type cooling system enables the MBT to operate in high ambient temperatures of up to 55°C without loss of power when using diesel fuel.

The highly efficient cassette/cyclone air filter is claimed to ensure air filtration with an efficiency rating of up to 99.8%, which is critical for operating in desert conditions.

The air-tight powerpack enables the MBT to wade to a maximum depth of up to 1.8 m without preparation and the compact design enables it to be installed co-axially with the side gearboxes. The company is also marketing its reversible transmission for use with the 6TD-series engine, which is claimed to improve forward and reverse speeds.

The top deck is provided with thermal protection to reduce the exhaust signature.

The company's smaller 3TD family of diesel engines features outputs of 280 to 600 hp and the larger 5TD with outputs of 700 to 1,050 hp for MBT applications. The 3, 5, and 6 in the designation denotes the number of cylinders.

The company also supplies auxiliary power units (APUs) that are typically installed in MBTs to enable their main engines to be shut down while maintaining operation of its electronic subsystems.

We may not make the mistake of choosing some non-proven new engine type. Our weather conditions are VERY harsh and that is why so many tanks failed to impress in recent trails and that is why the IA struggles in this department. We made excellent choice in Al-Khalid and now when we go for the new MBT we must make the decision wisely. A proven 1500hp engine and more importantly one that works well and passes trails in our conditions should be what we select.

Since Pakistan is already a big user of Ukrainian engines and they've proven their worth in service. This would be a very viable power pack for Pakistan's next gen tank preference. Because of Ukraine's internal issues, could get further facilities for maintenance and assembly.

Pretty high hopes for customized VT-4 with this engine as Al-Haider.

The 1200 HP engine which we use in AL KHALID also failed initially but than Ukraine promised to resolve the engine issue soon and they did. So I am hoping they have now overcome the issues with 1500HP engine which we faced and reported during trials. And if they have than I can see OPLOT M as AL HAIDER Tank @kaonalpha @balixd

Yes engine issue solved long back but and as per our requirements we need 1500 Hp engine thats why Al Khalid 2 trials are on hold since long time. More on above Ukraine is no more reliable source since Russian involvement and you may surprise to know we did many rounds of talks with Russian officials to get 1500 Hp to 2000 Hp engine and locally manufacturing of parts and overhauling facilities, probably the variant of an engine being used in Armata Tank, now Chinese also involved and please don't ask for the sources.

The 1200hp 6TD-2 Ukrainian diesel? Or the 1200hp Perkins (UK) Condor diesel?

Considering the fact that our entire Fleet of top notch tanks like Al Zarrar, Al Khalid & T80UD operate Ukraine engines, and they have performed very well in our adverse condition.
So it's very fine to assume that this new tank engine will give satisfactory results in Pakistan.
Let them install that engine in OplotM, let OplotM return back for further trials.......
Only then proven results will appear.......
If Al Khalid 2 project is in pipeline, then this 1500 hp engine can become it's power plant, and we can easily power up 50+ Ton tank with good (24+) Power to weight ratio.......

Atleast Ukrainians wont give you gimped variant.
