DUBAI: A delegation from the UAE Space Agency has undertaken a visit to the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) to discuss possibilities of cooperation between the two space organizations.

The delegation was led by Khalifa Al Rumaithi, chairman of the UAE Space Agency, and Mohammed Nasser Al Ahbabi, its director-general, according to statement released by official WAM news agency.

This is part of the agency's efforts to build strategic partnerships and achieve goals of regional and international cooperation within the industry, it said.

The UAE delegation learnt about the Indian space sector and the different programmes that Isro has led within space exploration, it said.

They also looked at satellite launching capabilities which have positioned India as a leading nation within the industry, as it provides a number of services across the space sector.

The visit also involved a tour of the Satellite Assembly and Testing Center for Isro, where the final tests are made on satellites before they are launched.

"The UAE and India have deep bonds and connections that span across political, economic, commercial and cultural historic roots. Working together within the space sector will only strengthen these connections and bring benefits to the UAE that include knowledge transfer and human capital development," Al Rumaithi said.

Al Ahbabi said India is one of the most advanced nations within the space sector and has a strong foundation and fascinating programmes.

"We therefore look at ways of working together to build partnership and transfer knowledge within this exciting industry," he said.

The UAE Space Agency provided a detailed presentation on the space sector strategy in the UAE, focusing on its objectives, initiatives and programmes.

The agency also provided information on the Mars Probe mission that will be launched by the UAE in time for 2021.

With a spate of several successful missions (including launch of several international satellites) recently and extremely competitive rates for launch, ISRO is now positioning itself as a very serious player in market of international space launch. Now whoever said spending money on space missions by a developing country wasn't a wise thing to do.

You know, the interesting part is last year they had announced that they will send their first mission to Mars by 2021.
The headlines in the newspaper had completely flummoxed me as to how they would achieve such an impossible* feat? (*impossible because they didnot even have a space agency when they announced it).
Call it my sixth sense but I knew sooner or later India will be a part of their "Mars" dream.
Now we know why Modi got an invitation to visit UAE. Lol
But seriously I'm glad that GCC countries have changed their attitude towards India,UAE being one of the friendliest among GCC was first to show signs. :)

That's how everything started mate. You have not invented anything new on this front (space exploration) and quite honestly there is nothing shocking in seeing an 1.2 BILLION strong nation develop on this front since the 1950's and 1960's. In fact it would be extremely criminal if that was not the case.

India should strive for much bigger goals. If I lived in a country that was home to almost 20% of the world's population I would dream as big as humanly possible. Your population enables you to reach levels that other countries can only dream about.

I wish that just 1 Arab country had even 1/3 of your population instead of us 450 million Arabs living scattered all over the place in 20 + countries and on 2 continents. So much easier to kickstart huge projects this way and you will not lack manpower either.

Anyway Arab-Indian cooperation on this front is welcome. Excited to see what this cooperation can lead to in say 2-3 decades. Hopefully many more Arab countries will follow UAE's road although there are limits to what a country the size of UAE can do on its own.

I know that India is one of the most diverse (in terms of ethnic groups, languages, religions) and complex countries on the planet but nowadays (or at least since your creation some 70 years ago) you have adopted more or less only 1 national identity which is a big advantage.

You should be right behind China if you ask me.

Dream big. You have the manpower to succeed. Only the sky is the limit.

Before anyone attacks me for whatever obscure reason due to this post, I want to state that I am not anti-Indian by any means and I believe that Arabs and Indians should have cordial ties like throughout the vast majority of our millennium old common ties.

Well thats true, the 6 years is too low a time if we see history of any nation trying to venture in space.

Yes, lets call it space diplomacy (remember Modi's offer to launch SAARC satellite).
I hope UAE and other countries in middle east and even South Asia get benefited from ISRO's expertise in area.

Politically this is Modi's chance to prove that he's not anti-Muslim.
I must say Modi has been lucky so far, he has been successful in proving his critics wrong.

And let's not forget the real hero. ISRO!!!

Hats off to Vikram Sarabhai, the man behind India's space research programme, and the man who worked towards acquiring competence in advance technology for the solution of country’s problems based on technical and economic evaluation of its real resources.

Quantity doesn't mean quality.
we have a huge population and that's the root to all our problems.

With luminaries like Kalam Sahab, Vikram Sarabhai and Professor Satish Dhawan at helm, these guys nurtured a cutting edge technology institute in times of Budgetary constraints and later technology denial, to make ISRO, an organization second to none. Blessed institute, isn't it.
