KOCHI: If true, it’s shocking. Five Indians, three of them Keralites, are in UAE jail for ‘spying’ for their home country. But their relatives here say all of them are victims of a trap laid by officials of the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi.
Following allegations that two officers of the Indian embassy in UAE, who put pressure on t
he Indians working in Meena Port in UAE to pass ‘vital information’ regarding the movement of ships at the port, the Ministry of External Affairs has convened a meeting of the relatives of the five persons in UAE jail on April 13 in Delhi to get to the truth. The three Malayalees, who were ‘trapped’ are Muhammed Ibrahim, 42, a native of Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam, Manarthadi Abbas, 46, of Malappuram, and Sheehani, a Thiruvanthapuram native.
Both Muhammad and Abbas were working as ‘port-coordinator’ and ‘basin supervisor’ respectively at the Meena Port, Abu Dhabi. While the first two are serving a jail terms of 10 years (and one million dirhams fine) and 5 years respectively in the UAE, Sheehani is awaiting his sentence.
When contacted MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said: “The External Affairs Ministry is not aware about such a case. Prima facie it appears to be a ridiculous allegation. But in any case we will enquire into the facts.”
The relatives named the Indian embassy officials as Ajay Kumar Mishra and Rudranath Juha, who trapped the Indian nationals for ‘espionage’.
They suspect these officials were operating as ‘double-agents’. A mail sent by Express to Indian Ambassador to UAE T P Seetharaman with copies to Neeta Bhushan, Deputy Chief of Mission & Head of Chancery and Kapil Raj,
Second Secretary (Passports, Information, Education & Culture) on Saturday and a follow-up mail on Monday did not elicit any response.
“We strongly suspect that the two officials are acting as double-agents to trap innocent Indians. The government should also investigate their wealth to see if it is earned as per their known source of income,” said Shafiq B, brother-in-law of Muhammed Ibrahim. “The government is free to investigate our wealth or our bank accounts,” Shafiq added.

NOTE:
1) There is no "Meena Port" in Abu Dhabi. The word "Meena or Mina" = Port in Arabic.
2) They were working at Port Zayed
@Horus @Oscar @MastanKhan do note who the families of the spies are accusing of entrapment.
