UAE Named World’s Largest Foreign Aid Donor In 2013

The UAE’s official development assistance amounted to $5.2 billion in 2013, up 375 per cent from 2012.

The UAE has been named the world’s largest donor of official development assistance in 2013, up from the 19th position in 2012, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Preliminary data from the OECD shows that the UAE’s official development assistance amounted to $5.2 billion in 2013. The country’s foreign aid was up by 375 per cent from 2012.

The UAE has been actively supporting its Arab neighbours undergoing a political turmoil with generous aid packages.

The country signed an agreement with Egypt last year to send aid worth $4.9 billion as a sign of support for the Arab state’s new government.

The UAE also announced aid worth $60 million for the victims of the civil war in Syria earlier this month. Officials said that almost $50 million will be used to help the displaced victims in Syria while the rest will be channelled to support Syrian refugees in Jordan.

According to the UAE Foreign Aid 2012 report, the country spent around Dhs5.83 billion in grants and loans to 137 nations in 2012.

UAE donated aid worth Dhs5.07 billion in 2012 to fund development projects while Dhs400 million was used to provide humanitarian assistance and Dhs360 million towards charity projects.

The report added that the UAE also committed Dhs5.59 billion in future development projects across 13 countries. Almost 78 per cent of these funds were estimated to be for official development assistance, officials said.

The UAE’s minister of development and International Co-operation Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi said that the country’s first position as an aid donor was not “accidental” but was a result strategic planning and allocation of funds.

“The UAE continues its work with its international donor partners in line with the directives of our wise leadership in order to enhance the sustainable development in the Third World countries and eradicate poverty,” she said.

The UAE’s Prime Minister and Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum tweeted: “The culture of giving is deeply rooted in our society and it has always nurtured by UAE leaders since the inception of the UAE.”

The UAE has been named the world’s largest donor of official development assistance in 2013, offering $5.4 billion (Dh19.84 billion), representing 1.34 per cent of its Gross National Income, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

To date, France is the only country to match this percentage through its globally administered aid in 1961.

The Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of OECD commended the UAE’s efforts to enhance and support international development.

DAC’s final report also showed that Norway came in the second position, after the UAE, achieving official development aid of 1.07 per cent, followed by Sweden, with 1.01 per cent, then Luxembourg in the fourth position with 1 per cent, Denmark in fifth position with 0.85 per cent, the UK in sixth position with 0.71 per cent, and Holland in seventh position with 0.67 per cent.

Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, said the final report of the DAC of the OECD has asserted the UAE’s merit to win the first position as the world’s largest donor country in proportion to the Gross National Income (GNI), making a record leap in the history — none of the DAC-member states has made such a large contribution for 50 years.

The UAE exceeded UN’s target of 0.7 per cent, providing 1.34 per cent of its Gross National Income as Official Development Assistance in 2013.

Shaikh Mansour added that since its establishment in 1971, the UAE has contributed to supporting international sustainable development efforts and had humanitarian responses to global crises and disasters, based on the humanitarian philosophy of the UAE’s wise leadership and generous contributions along the past decades in all international development forums, securing the lives of millions of people around the world, establishing international peace and security, creating better opportunities and a bright future for developing countries’ people.

“This advanced position in the international development efforts was attained thanks to our visionary leadership’s directives. [The leadership is] represented by His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, [President of the UAE], His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President [and] Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and [thanks] to the ceaseless follow up from General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces.”

If people criticize you and obsess about you then this means that you are doing something right. That's the story of most GCC rulers on this front. I mean foreign aid, donations, investments abroad etc. They have their big faults as well but this is another story altogether.

Yet ignorants and trolls here on PDF create troll threads trying to prove otherwise to start flame wars. Often people that have no clue about what they are blabbering about nor have they any ties to the ME.

GCC is almost a 2 trillion economy and is moving towards the right goals on many front. People wishing for a dismiss in influence and power are only fooling themselves. With truly democratic systems the region will become much stronger as well.
