U.S. Warns Turkey Over Detained Pastor as Market Meltdown Drags On

The Turkish Hostage Crisis

Erdogan’s case against American pastor Andrew Brunson is ludicrous.

It’s never a good idea to negotiate with a hostage-taker, but when it’s a NATO ally, there isn’t much choice.

The Trump administration has been trying to get back a Christian pastor detained in Turkey since October 2016, and when a possible deal at the sidelines of the NATO summit fell through, it decided to drop the hammer.

A couple of weeks ago, the administration sanctioned Turkey’s justice and interior ministers — remember, these are top officials of a fellow NATO country. The action hit the Turkish currency and stock market hard. Then President Donald Trump intervened in his inimitable style, with a tweet promising a doubling of aluminum and steel tariffs against the country and pointedly noting the drop in the value of the lira.

As always, the president’s shoot-from-the-lip style is open to question, but Turkey deserved every last character — including the two exclamation points — in that presidential tweet. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is not Justin Trudeau or Angela Merkel, a leader firmly within the liberal West who annoys Trump. He’s an Islamist authoritarian who is fundamentally changing the character of an erstwhile ally.

Erdogan’s resort to hostage-taking as a tactic to gain leverage over allies — it’s not just us — is a barbarous throwback and a disgusting homage to rogue states such as Iran and North Korea. He also has grabbed a Turkish-American NASA scientist and local employees of American consulates.

The case against the pastor, the highest-profile case, is ludicrous. Andrew Brunson lived with his family in a seaside city, Izmir, for more than 20 years until the government, after Erdogan survived a coup, decided that he was guilty of aiding terrorist organizations and carrying out military espionage.

The alleged supporting evidence is a collection of absurdities that could have been assembled by the Turkish equivalent of Alex Jones — a video of a traditional Arab dish sent to Brunson by his daughter, a church member telling the pastor by text that he couldn’t make it to a service, a photo of him with a man in a scarf bearing certain colors, and so on, all of which supposedly implicates him in dire crimes against the Turkish state.

What this clearly is about is holding Brunson to try to get Fethullah Gulen, a former Erdogan ally and cleric who lives on a farm in Pennsylvania. With great fervency but little evidence, the Turkish government accuses Gulen of being behind the shadowy July 15, 2016, coup that became an occasion for Erdogan to seize emergency powers and purge the state and civil society of his political enemies.

Erdogan isn’t even subtle about the agenda behind the seizure of Brunson. In a talk to police officers last year, he said, “They say, ‘Give us this certain pastor,’” meaning Brunson, to which Erdogan’s rejoinder was, “You have another pastor in your hands; give him to us.”

This isn’t a trade the U.S. should be willing to make, but a swap of a Turkish woman held in Israel for links to Hamas in exchange for Brunson was reportedly discussed at the last NATO summit. When nothing ultimately came of it — although Brunson was released into house arrest — the crisis escalated to a different level.

Erdogan blames an “economic war” for his country’s dire economic straits. He should instead blame his own mismanagement. Turkey was already vulnerable to an end of the era of cheap capital, even before it pursued a course of confrontation with a country vastly richer and more powerful than it is.

There were always going to be stresses in the U.S.–Turkish alliance; Turkey views the Kurds as a threat, and we consider them allies. But the chief cause of the radical deterioration in the relationship is Turkey’s rank anti-Americanism, a paranoia stoked at every turn by Erdogan for his own cynical purposes.

He is now reaping what he sowed, and if Erdogan wants relief, his first step should be releasing the hostages.

Regarding Pakistan your comment will most probably anger many on this forum. Nevertheless, you have spoken what seemed to be the case before Imran came to power. I don't think Imran is afraid of the US.
IK is a good person with a support of lot of gen public but he has lot of enemies both internal and external. the internal enemies will do anything for external enemies. IK will need the support of an honest and loyal to the country army chief.
as far as angering others is concerned i dont want to hurt anybody's feelings but at the same time i admit the mistakes of our leadership. it is a fact that our foreign policy has been under control of washington. it is expected that IK may get us our independence but the nation has to fully support him. RAW,CIA, NDS and Mosad will accelerate their fifth gen warfare against pak

Turkey is holding Brunson as a bargaining chip for getting back Gulen. It's simple as that.

They're not getting him back no matter what.

Wouldn't put it past Trump to even invite him to the white house and use the stunt to destabilize the Turks.

Erdo is going down, big league, Trump will wipe the floor with him and the Turks.

One person cannot be worth the hardships of entire nation.
Nobody needs a dose of knowledge as to what a US sanctions can do to a country especially one which has been a nato ally all the time and has been in bed with US all the time.

It's just an excuse for Turkey for a strategic new re-alignment in the new world order. This was coming even before the US tried the regime change via the Coup. Remember Turkey is an ex-colonial power and colonial powers never change their spots as they always reminiscence about the good old days.

Turks are faithless people. You don't know what they have in their minds. Ottman mentality?

comment of a german politican of the current turkish acting... they feel like a luxury sedan and in real they are a small hatchback with serious engine problems...

Turkey is not only holding the pastor as hostage... they hold 18 US citizen as hostage including MEMBERS of the embassy... Erdogan gambeld high against USA to get Gulen and other claims and he lost badly because USA did not move a mm... now he turns towards Russia...which is no realy option ... Russia and Turkey have to many interest conflicts in Syria Caucasia etc and if you look back in history they were bad enemys over a very long period of time... they will never establish a serious partnership with Russia as a alternative for the USA... Same goes for China and Chinas agressive action against muslims... how should Erdogan the self proclaimed protector of all muslims explain his voters that he suddenly make deals and good friendship with a muslim bashing nation like China?

Realistic Erdogans only option is turn towards EU ... but after all his trashtalking and blaming of almost any european politican there will come many hard to swallow claims from the EU...and Erdogan has to open his mouth wide and has to swallow them all... or Turkey will do a hard economy suicied crash landing...
European economy analyst give Turkey´s bank system one year befor a total collaps ... turkey export 44% of all their goods to Europe... Erdogan has no real choise anymore!

The turkish Lira already is in free fall... 1. August 4.9TRY $1 .... 14. August 6.86Try for $1.
There is no one who could or is willing to help Turkey against the eco power of the USA.

If Erdogan make a u-turn now he will lose the respect and support of his base.

I have a feeling Erdogan will go all in on this one. I'd be surprised if he doesn't pay a surprise visit to China.

his next trip goes to Berlin..... ;)

. .
Wouldn't it make sense to go to Berlin after going to Beijing?

seriously what should ask Erdogan for in Beijing?

Concratulate China for their agressive politic against the chineses muslims were currently about 3 million muslims are locked into "anti terror camps"... fresh numbers from UNO
What is loosing more ... ask for help, politicans he has blamed or ask for help, someone seriously badly treating muslims?
