Biden blames US allies in Middle East for rise of ISIS
US Vice-President Joe Biden has accused America’s key allies in the Middle East of allowing the rise of the Islamic State (IS), saying they supported extremists with money and weapons in their eagerness to oust the Assad regime in Syria.

America’s “biggest problem” in Syria is its regional allies, Biden told students at the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University on Thursday.

“Our allies in the region were our largest problem in Syria,” he said, explaining that Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the UAE were “so determined to take down Assad,” that in a sense they started a “proxy Sunni-Shia war” by pouring “hundreds of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of tons of weapons” towards anyone who would fight against Assad.

“And we could not convince our colleagues to stop supplying them,” said Biden, thus disassociating the US from unleashing the civil war in Syria.

“The outcome of such a policy now is more visible,” he said, as it turned out they supplied extremists from Al-Nusra Front and Al-Qaeda.

All of a sudden the regional powers that sponsored anti-Assad rebels awakened to the dawn of a major international security threat in the face of ISIS – now called Islamic State. After being essentially thrown out of Iraq it found open space and territory in eastern Syria and established close ties with the Al-Nusra Front which the US had earlier declared a terrorist group.

Now Washington needs a coalition of Sunni states to fight the Islamic State because “America can't once again go in to Muslim nation and be the aggressor, it has to be led by Sunnis, to attack a Sunni organization [the IS],” Biden said, acknowledging that it is for the first time that the US uses a geopolitical strategy.

“Even if we wanted it to be, it cannot be our fight alone,” Biden said. “This cannot be turned into a US ground war against another Arab nation in the Middle East.”

“But of what I’m more astonished is of his apparent amnesia about what America and Britain were trying to ferment in Syria only a year ago. They were not only putting staff intelligence personnel on the ground, and providing logistical support to the rebels in Syria; they were spearheading the campaign to try to oust Assad, former MI5 agent Annie Machon told RT.

She added that “Perhaps, the Vice President is finally learning some lessons from history. It does not matter who you think your friends are going to be in the region. Very often they will be taken over or subsumed into a more radical group.”

His allegations are without evidence while US support for rebells is officially, ironic isnt it? :)

Not to mention, I can't even find a source for this quote other than RT.

Some of these Syrian posters don't seem to understand the concept of credibility. And then they wonder why nobody takes what they say seriously.

He gave you the clip and you are talking about the credibility?

He and RT conveniently failed to include the part of the video where Biden says Saudi Arabia has stopped the funding, the Qataris have cut off support of the extremists and Turkey is sealing its border.

Too late, as Iran foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said this coalition is "Coalition of Repenters", those who made and supported this terrorist groups are now afraid that the boomerang effects and consequences of their stupidity could work and go into revers and turn to a threat to their lands.

As if the so called allies (actually states ruled by US planted stooges) would have done this without encouragement of USA.

Turkey's support is also official. But who cares what "officials" say, it's all obvious. You should remove that Ataturk picture by the way, it seems that you don't share Ataturk's values, such as "peace at home and peace in the world".

Exactly what came to my mind when I saw the title, as if Washington's stooges are acting completely on their own. As if they aren't serving Washington's hegemony in the region. What utter bull.shit.. Please...

Biden says Erdoğan admitted ISIL mistake

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan admitted mistakes that paved the way for the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

"President Erdoğan told me, he is an old friend, said you were right, we let too many people through, now we are trying to seal the border," Biden said during a speech on foreign policy at Harvard Kennedy School on Oct. 2.

While speaking to the students for nearly an hour and a half, Biden defended the U.S. foreign policy, stressing that the White House was not late to move against the rise of the ISIL. He said that the regional allies of the U.S, determined to take down Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, "poured hundreds of millions dollars, and tens thousands of tones of weapons into anyone who would fight against al-Assad, accepted the people who would be in supply for Al Nusra and Al Qaeda and extremist elements of jihadists coming from other parts of the world."

"Our biggest problem is our allies. Our allies in the region were our largest problem in Syria. The Turks, we’re great friends and I have a great relationship with Erdoğan that I spent a lot of time with. The Saudis, The Emiratis etc... What were they doing?" Biden asked.

"So now what is happening, all of sudden everybody is awakened," Biden added, claiming that like Turkey admitted its mistakes, Saudi Arabia and Qatar stopped the funding of jihadists.

"Now we have and the president has been able to put together a coalition of our Sunni neighbors, because America can’t once again go in to a Muslim nation and be the aggressive. It has to be led by Sunnis to go and attack a Sunni organization," Biden said.

"They voted in the Turkish parliament to allow Turkish ground forces in the take on ISIL, Turkish airspace be able to be used by NATO and by other allies, Turkish airspace be able to accommodate our drones ... I took a while for Turkey, a Sunni nation, to figure out that ISIL was a direct and immediate threat to their well-being."

With similar remarks, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry had recently placed the blame for the rise of the ISIL on those who resorted to any means to oust al-Assad, creating what he called a “sloppy process.”

Kendra Barkoff, the spokeswoman for the Vice President, also sent a written statement by e-mail on Mr. Biden's remarks.

"Turkey is a critical Ally for the United States, and the Vice President has a personally close relationship with President Erdogan, whom he respects and admires," Barkoff said.

"The two leaders spoke today about our countries’ common effort to combat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and agreed to coordinate our actions going forward. In the Vice President’s remarks yesterday at Harvard University, he was trying to convey that none of us knew enough about the various elements of the opposition within Syria. However, now that we are confronted with the common threat of ISIL, we are determined to act with our Allies and partners in the region to degrade and destroy this malicious force.”

Turkish President Erdoğan demands apology if Biden uttered ISIL remarks

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has demanded an apology from U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, if his reported comments about Turkey's "mistakes that paved the way for the rise of the jihadists" were true.

"If Biden told these words, then he will be history for me. I never uttered such remarks," Erdoğan said after the morning prayer for Eid al-Adha -the festival of sacrifice observed by Muslims all over the world- in Istanbul on early Oct. 4.

"President Erdoğan told me, he is an old friend, said you were right, we let too many people through, now we are trying to seal the border," Biden had said during a speech on foreign policy at Harvard Kennedy School on Oct. 2, while complaining about the conduct of his country's regional allies that led to the rise of the Islamic State and Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

"I was Prime Minister at the time. We absolutely didn't provide even the smallest amount of support to any terrorist organization, including the ISIL. Nobody can prove it. Foreign fighters never crossed from Turkey to Syria. There were people coming to Turkey as tourists and went to Syria, but nobody can suggest that they were armed while crossing the border," Erdoğan said.

Turkish President also stressed that Ankara's "sensitivity" over the issue continues, as do its measures to prevent the jihadist flow into Syria.

"I see [Biden's remarks] regretfully. I never admitted any mistake nor did we told them that they 'were right' during my visit to the U.S. If Mr. Biden uttered these remarks at Harvard, he should apologize. I'm telling this clearly. And we won't accept slender, indirect explanations," Erdoğan added.

Turkish PM, too, raises objections

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said Biden's remarks are unacceptaple.

"It is impossible to accept his criticism. All the U.S. authorities and Biden very well know that Turkey, on its own, has hosted millions of refugees for four years. If all the warnings that Turkey made had been taken into consideration, [ISIL] would not be an issue today," Davutoglu told reporters following the prayer for Eid al-Adha in Istanbul on Oct. 4.

The Turkish prime minister also said that the tomb of Suleyman Shah, a sovereign Turkish territory in Syria, was safe.

Turkish soldiers have been alert for potential attacks as there have been concerns that ISIL was getting close to the tomb.

"Soldiers are today wishing each other a happy Eid. We are, as a whole nation, together with them, and we will always proudly appreciate their efforts, patience, and determination."

Keep bitching and crying, we won't do your dirty work, all of your attemps to push Turkey to a fight with ISIS, are futile.

disgusting, all they know is how to create trouble and profit off of it.

we need a euromaidan like in the US, their leadership needs to be dragged out the white house and lynched by their own people, and a common sense good government put in place, one that's good for their people and the rest of the world.

great power is just a tool, why not wield it and do some good for a change ?

Can you please tell us why would a person like Joe Biden, the VP of US, and one of Turkey's biggest allies, tell something like this? Why would he tell a lie like this about their allies? And if we assume he is right, you really think Erdogan would say that Biden is right actually? That we have sent in too much rebels to Syria?

Let's look at it this way. Both of us know that U.S blames Iran for most of the things that go wrong in ME, they could easily claim that it's Iran who is behind IS or Nusra or other groups, as they have claimed the same thing before about Taliban and AQ, why did they chose their biggest allies to blame this time?

After Erdogans statement the White House didnt wait long for a damage controll, they said that ''Biden actually admires Erdogan'', there is clearly something wrong with Bidens statement.

I will post the article in English as soon as its aviable, in the mean time you can google traslate this.

If Kobanê falls, the US and Turkey will have blood on their hands | ROAR Magazine

As Kurdish forces put up a heroic fight to save the democratic stronghold of Kobanê, the US-led coalition seems content to let ISIS commit a massacre.

Though shamelessly under-reported in the international media, the battle for Kobanê is of crucial importance for the fight against ISIS, the fate of the Kurds, and the future of the region more generally. As one of the few strongholds of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), the Syrian affiliate of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Kobanê is both a major thorn in the side of ISIS and the site of a thriving popular experiment in democratic autonomy. Yet the momentous struggle of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) is being blatantly ignored by the US-led coalition and cynically exploited by the Turkish state, both of which appear to be content to let ISIS slaughter the local population and decimate the Kurdish resistance.

Turkey, for its part, has been accused of colluding with ISIS in a dual attempt to oust its regional nemesis, the Syrian tyrant Bashar al-Assad, and at the same time undermine the Kurdish struggle for autonomy. It is a public secret that Turkey — an important US ally and the second biggest military force in NATO — has long kept its borders open to extremist militants trying to enter Syria to join the insurrection against Assad, even allowing ISIS fighters to cross back into Turkey to regroup, receive medical treatment, and sell Syrian and Iraqi oil on the black market. At the same time, it has prevented thousands of Turkish Kurds from crossing the border and joining their compatriots in the defense of Kobanê, even firing teargas at Kurdish refugees fleeing from Syria.
